I just came across this, and WOW! Of course the playing is fantastic, as the HR band always is. The audio engineering is also fantastic (the difference between the "mastered" version and the original stream is rather subtle). And let's not forget the great work of the video crew! Accordion is a natural fit with big band, as Maria Schneider has shown for decades with her group (and the great Gary Versace). It adds another texture unlike any of the other instruments, with a surprising range of expression. Vincent is just wonderful--incredible ideas and mastery of the instrument. Thought I heard a quote from The Brothers Johnson during the accordion and drum duet in Workin Rhythm! Plus, the compositions and arrangements are just beautiful. So many unexpected transitions and interesting ideas--loved the muted piano strings! I'm a sucker for big, dark harmonies, and even "Sentimental Mood," which has been played to death, had an interesting, haunting treatment by Magnus Lindgren. One thing I found curious was the theme in PUTRI CENING AYUN, which to many of us in the US is known as the folk song "Shenandoah." I don't know the origins of that tune, which likely was brought to the US centuries ago, but it's almost certainly not Balinese. Very interesting juxtaposition (with extra melancholy from the accordion). This was a truly special show!
