Wonderful review again Ian. Very detailed and informative. What I like about all your reviews is your deconstruction of different aspects of a design. Highs, lows, pace, speed and so on. Another stellar review was Hana Vs Nagaoka. Helped me decide on the cartridge. My wishlist would include Park's Audio Puffin Phonostage. As far as I know, it's the only Phonostage that's purely digital. So gain settings on offer is infinite and would never be an issue. Plus you can also use to increase the gain of your digital files. Would love to see your views on that. Thank you for your time and effort sir. Cheers.

@@HiViNywschannel With Spatial the big news is the new X5 and X3 models. I spoke to Clayton about them last fall at Rocky Mountain Audio fest (RMAF). According to Clayton the compression driver is unlike anything on the market with very high resolution. The front baffle is also a big step up in rigidity and vibration control. Based on early reports from Apoxia at Chicago I am considering it for an upgrade. I hope to hear them at RMAF this year. They are 97 db efficient 8 ohm speakers. Bring out your purist high quality low watt class A and they will be a powerhouse with this speaker. Schiit's new SOL turntable is coming hopefully soon. Mike Moffat is obsessed with working to get it right. Supposed to be well under 1 grand US. Personally still putting lots of thought into a phono preamp upgrade from the Mani. Thinking of Sutherland, Musical Surroundings, Manley Labs Chinook, and others. By the way my daughter recently gave me my first grand child and her name is Grace. My dog Zoey is obsessed with her. Very funny!

Hi my friend, great to se you catch up!👋😄.... yes the Swagman PSU. There is no battery power supply per se. The Swagman simply substitutes for the wallwart which comes with the Mani. So one uses the Swagman instead of the standard wallwart. Thank you for coming by again! Warmest Regards 💪🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶

Wow, another great review. Yes, while the differences aren't completely black and white stark, they ARE there and as you say, it's the bass and treble along with the air and decay where the MoFi shines, again, had to turn the volume up a little to discern over YT compression, and I would think it is a bit more obvious in real life. I like the hint of the shootout with the Schitt and the MoFi, THAT should be a fun review!

Dear Buddy :-D your wobble is not a wobble, coz the platter is stuck down, and is probably a slight unevenness in the horizontal printings of the dots/edges. Ian, glad to see a review of a Vincent product! The Vincent is a beautiful piece of machining, though I was shocked at how much better the mofi sounded. Have you ever had a chance to hear the tube version of the Vincent phono stage? I have been trying to find the weak link in my setup at home, and am wondering why it sounds really good with headphones, and not as good with speakers? Using a Bottlehead Quickie (battery powered preamp) and a Inter-m R500 amp, with Definitive Technology BP-6B speakers. Probably un-related to my phono pre-amp? Guessing this has to do with room acoustics? How can I fix that without spending a fortune? (and preferably keeping the wife happy lol).

I was curious if you ever got to hear/Compare a EAR 834P phono with the Avid/Whest grouping. I have never heard it but apparently is another giant killer
@HiViNywschannel5 жыл бұрын
Hi Buddy Arjun :-D thank you for coming by and your time writing to me. And, congratulations for getting the Mani. What a crazy piece of kit. ....i hear your VERY good suggestions of the EAR834P and the Avid/Whest grouping. Great! I have home auditioned the EAR 834P before, which you can see :-D nestled at the right hand corner during the AT VM520EB cartridge review, you can zoom to 6:46 timing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKKan2aVeK2Ia8U I will say: 1. The EAR 834P is a fantastic phonostage in MC mode, but poor in MM. 2. The Avid Pulsus at a slightly cheaper price, still wins out slightly over the 834P in MC. But BOTH 834P and Pulsus are great and i don't mind having either as my MC phonostage at home. 3. Whest is not what I would recommend, i have heard the sig 3, ps.30rdt, ps.40rdt, and the reference mk5,...and all easily beaten by phonostages from other brands. Also the Whest 2, sig3, ps.30rdt and ps.40rdt all have a certain electronic signature and does not flow as fluidly and with analogue prowess as the Avid Pulsus. 4. The IconAudio PS1Mk2 is a very, very good phonostage which I personally bought after extensive listening. It does BOTH MM and MC well. The EAR834P and Pulsus are thereabout the equal of the PS1mk2 in terms of MC performance, but the PS1Mk2 is better in MM performance than both the Pulsus and EAR834P. However, the PS1mk2 exterior build quality is not as good as the Pulsus and EAR834P. Have you compared these phono stages with an MC cart? I have the Mani, and have liked it very much. But one criticism I have heard is that it doesn't handle MC carts as well as some others, but excels with MM carts. I was wondering if the StudioPhono did a better job there.
@ClosDeLaRoche875 жыл бұрын
Mani is great for HOMC with its 48db setting but not good with LOMC because of its strange 47 ohm loading. The standard loading for LOMC is 100 ohms. Either the Vincent or MoFi would be better. Alternatively you can get a Step Up Transformer for the Mani.

Been using a Vincent Pho 8 with my Cliffwood table for months now, and had been pretty happy, although I had been feeling volume was a bit lacking with my grado green cart. I had been wanting to try a wood body grado and so I purchased a high output reference platinum 1. I was definitely satisfied that it was much improved from the Grado green, however I felt like the volume issue was even further exasperated. I had been watching your reviews and finally decided I would give the schiit mani a try. I already have a modi multibit dac and have loved it for a couple years now, but I had always expected the vincent to beat the sound of the mani back when I was doing my phono preamp research and had decided to get the vincent. What a mistake I made! The adjustable gain of the mani has completely eliminated my volume issue first off, but what shocks me is how much more detail I am getting from the RP1 cartridge now than with the vincent. Initially I had chosen the 48 db setting thinking that it would probably be the best fit for me as I was having lower than desired volume with the vincent which I think is 42 DB. It definitely improved the volume and the sound came to life, so much more space around individual instruments and voices, so much better ambience and decay on reverb. I decided to try out the high gain setting of 59 db, this effectively matches the volume of my turntable to the volume of a CD or my pc input which is nice, but honestly I am shocked I swear the cartridge sounds best running with the high gain. I brought my wife in and after doing some back and forth swaps she confirmed that she preferred the sound when I had switched to the higher gain on the schiit. I am not sure if there is any reprocussion from running the high gain with a cartridge that has a pretty high 4.8mv output, but the sound is so full and rich, and I no longer have to push my volume control to past 12 oclock to reach a saisfying playback level. I would love to hear from other schiit mani users who have done some tinkering with the gain settings and see if anyone else has had this experience as well?

Hi Ian. Great job...one more time! I am waiting for the next comparison Mani VS Mofi. In my opinion, it would be very useful to hear at some point, the performance of Mani with 'Swagman LAB' Power Supply. As i can see in your videos, you have in your rack Avid Pulsare and Croft phono stages. I wonder how they sound these units comparison with Mani? The difference in price, is ten or more times higher. What is their difference in listening? How big is it ? Exists ? (I am talking about MM cartridges). See you... THANKS !
@HiViNywschannel5 жыл бұрын
Dearest Buddy Makis from Athens :-D!!! Hi hi hi!!! Thank you !!!! Sorry for my 7 hours' late reply my friend... and thank you for your kind time catching up and writing so kindly to me again! I have gathered all the sound files from the Mani and the MoFi, and i need to consolidate the bite-sized pieces and pass to all of you buddies in the next episode. Hehheh... the Pulsare2 is superb in MC, and the Croft riaa rs in MM. Thank you for asking a very pertinent question Brother. Top marks for your question :-D 1. Because of the law of diminishing returns, the degree of improvement of the Croft over the Mani, would not be 20 times better than the Mani. 2. ...and that many/most electronic hifi manufacturers do not bother to invest much of their research and design of a superb MM phonostage once they cross the US$1k price point... i further elucidate: because MM carts are generally cheaper, and the industry's hopping on and blowing the "higher standards" of playback with an MC, the MM carts are cheaper and mostly below $400, and the MC carts go all the way in premium prices to 10,000k and above. A typical hifi journeyman, would, thus buy a $1,500 MC cart, and accompany it with a $2k to $3k phonostage.... the industry recognizes this and hence would not come out with a $2 - 3k MM phonostage as most MM carts are below $400. :-D Good news. I have realized that a US$270 Nagaoka MP-150 beats the US$450 Ortofon Quintet Blue and Hana EL, EASILY, in Detail+Refinement AND Dynamics+Scale+Weight. A low-output MC cart apparently blowing its horns that it offers refinement which is the "exclusive territory of a MC cart and not a MM cart", will STILL need a very expensive MC phonostage to bring out the Dynamics+Scale+Weight aspect of sound reproduction, besides offering that refinement. Thus with the Nagaoka MP-150 and MP-200 setting extreme standards, and also the Goldring 1042 (very lucky U.K. residents) together carrying the torch for MMs, we thus see the triumph and fact of a MM cart pairing with a specially-, single-mindedly- designed MM phonostage, blazing ahead for us a road of vinyl analogue extreme standards, without the high cost of a MC setup and a difficult path of finding "that" expensive MC phonostage to pair with the low-output MC cart. Mr Glenn Croft, if you contact him directly, he would be able to negotiate a good price for his products. He is able to ship to you directly. Of course if you are a UK citizen, you are directed to buy from that few UK retailers for Croft products. The Croft riaa rs phonostage that I have procured from him, is indeed, superb. No fault at all with the performance. Flawless. Beautiful, detailed, extremely refined, clear, very deep bass, very detailed bass, very powerful bass, very clean, very quiet.

@HiViNywschannel3 жыл бұрын
Dear Buddy, definitely almost always the MM, because the MM cartridge can easily be made to sound fantastic when paired with a phonostage. It is difficult for a phonostage to bring an MC cartridge to its best potential.....usually it comes at a tremendous cost. And it is not worth the trip down that rabbit hole. We live free on open land, with great MM carts like the Goldring 1006, 1042, Nagaoka MP-100, 150, 200 and 500. We are free. Hi Ian! How are you, my friend? Woh, that one was a pretty close nail biter at times. I think the 2 companies should design a “PHO-Fi” phono stage, then we could possibly have something. When I listened to that vid with headphones on, I noticed that the majority of the time where the 2 phono stages were supposedly the same, that the MoFi was making a total fool out of the PHO-8. I’m sure it an entirely different situation when the speakers are right in front of you, and you’re able to not only feel the vibrational frequencies, but I’m sure I / one misses out on those higher frequencies above 20kHz, that you can’t hear, but you can feel. Ahh, the magic of analog. It is truly a thing of beauty. Btw, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the Mani is gonna spank both the PHO-8 and MoFi phono stages, but I could be completely wrong. It hasn’t let me down as of yet though. Maybe as we get into the higher tier of phono pre’s, we may start to see the Mani start to lose a bit of its luster? I wonder how much money and competition it will actually take to knock the Mani down a peg. Just 1 peg! Just 1! 😂 Haha!

I owned a Mani for a couple a months and sold it an year ago, then I briefly demoed a Studio Phono with the Studio Deck last moth...i think there will be a new king in town ;). Anyway...in the same price range i'd consider the ProJect Tube Box S2 as an interesting alternative.

Again a fantastic clip Ian. On your recomendation I bought a Schiit Mani a year ago, then a MP-150. Just brilliant. Wanting to upgrade, I bought a used E.A.R. 834. Here in Denmark where I live, it's expensive, even used, like 8 times the price of the Mani, and very well tested through many years. So my expectations was high...... 2 weeks in, and i am back to the Mani.... It betters it in almost every way..... The Mani is such a brilliant design😃 Oh... And if you havent yet tried it with a external battery supply, you are missing out even more😎

"Mani betters the E A R 834 in almost every way".....wow! Claus, I've come to the conclusion not to purchase any record playing products until Ian gives the recommendation from here forward. I use an mp-110 with the Mani on my hot rodded Rega. I'll probably upgrade to the mp-200 and call it a day. I'll have more money left for records!

Dear Claus :-D yes yes, yes!!!! Mani vs the EAR834P!!! I choose the Mani easily. EASILY. I have a LOT of respect for the 834P, and my good friend in the U.K. has been using it for long. He is a tube fan. I am, too, a tube fan. But where objectivity and subjectivity reign in, I choose the Mani over the 834P, in terms of MM performance. "Better in almost every way" INDEED :-D !!!!!!!!! I agree.

Dear Eric!!! hi and great to see you chatting up with Claus:-D!!!! All buddies!!!! YAY!!!!! Hehheh.... thank you again for your very kind words...we are all the same, consumers and sound-minded folks on vinyl analogue and how we value and cherish its qualities, and the bliss it gives us... a hot-rodded Rega!?!! Brother Eric!!! I have yet to know! How is it hot-rodded? :-D YUM YUM YUMMYYYY!!! (I AGREE : MORE MONEY FOR RECORDS: I WANT MORE RECORDS!!!!)

@@HiViNywschannel Hot rodded meaning I upgraded the subplatter and platter with Groovtracer products, the motor to the 24v, and the arm with an rb303. I know.....I should have just purchased a 3 series back in 2010 to begin with. My first turntable was an entey level Technics turntable back in the early 80's. I got away from vinyl due to cassettes and later CDs. When I bought the rp1 I didn't realize how much fun buying/playing records would be. Anyway, it's been a fun journey.
@HiViNywschannel5 жыл бұрын
YAYYAY!!! A great RB303!!!! Very, VERY GOOD!!! and those GrooveTracer subplatter and platter... EXCELLENT. A 24V motor to bring it super current and QUIET.... you have done everything VERY, VERY WELL. I am still with my stock P1 with the RB110 and 24v motor, and stock subplatter and platter :-D . Thank you for sharing with me again all your sound advice and journey along with me. Thank you Sir.

I’m late to the party my friend, must do better! What an interesting review. I would have gambled that the Vincent would win, based purely on it’s perceived value, although there wasn’t much in it! You’re right, don’t judge a book by its cover. What were the cost prices of both of those? I had considered the valve model, 701 I think it is but it’s impossible to audition here in my part of the UK. Might just stick with my Mani for now, after all, if it’s not broken why fix it! Thank you once again for your efforts and expense in educating our vinyl community. Best wishes to you and your family. Kind regards - Ron

I appreciate your time Brother, for an old friend in me. Grateful, ~ ian. ( :-D yes, if it's not broken, don't fix it...the Mani, beyond hanging on strongly)

I will email you details and eventually will have to conference with you. I think you'll like the project -TONE

Well,this is somewhat disappointing to be honest. The Vincent should have been the better one. But i suspect it was designed slightly towards the fashionable "warmer" vinyl sound than strict neutrality. On the other side the MoFi lacks deep bass,which might be for some a no go on it alone. Given that both preamps are on the higher end of budget gear placed,pricewise,personaly im not conviced by both. At least not with a MP-200 MM cartridge. It would have been illuminating if both were tested with a 2nd MM and also a MC,given the fact that both phonostages are MC capable. A decent MC like a AT33PTG/II or a MC20 Super wouldve sufficed. In my experience phonostages are rarely equally finetuned for both types. Most are better with MM,but some are better with MC. In old germany the MoFi costs 350€ and the Vincent 300€. So despite of the material battle that Vincent offers with the PHO-8 its less costly. Weird. And the Tisbury is just 139€ via UK import. But obviously its not worth even that. Anyway Ian,your reviews are highly appreciated. Thanks for the good work.

Hi Ian, Thank you very much for spending so much time in this excellent review. Personally I think that a lot of people underestimate the importance of a good phone stage. If it offers high quality than it's an perfect investment for a longer time. All the best for you and your family. PS: By the way - recently I've changed my turntable and guess what - I use the Nagaoka MP 150 (you can check it out on my channel...)!
