HI - the foam I used as a plug has melted into the vinegar - obvs some new form of packing - not Styrofoam/polystyrene here...have I killed the culture? I have removed it and hoped not as I have been to too many funerals lately !?

Bought new vinegar eel culture yesterday. Today there is a about 1/4 inch of whitish like sediment at the bottom of the cider vinegar, water & apple slices solution I dumped them into. Under magnification & a flashlight I can't detect any movement whatsoever. Are they all laying at the bottom dead?

Hi there! I have been culturing these little guys for a few months and recently split my first pair of cultures into several more. However, 2 of my new cultures have produced a white film on the top, which I fear is keeping the eels from getting air. I have skimmed it off but it keeps growing back. What is this and how do I get rid of it without just dumping the cultures and starting over?

Etienne Crowe did the white film happen right away or did it take a few days? Sometimes a film on top can be from a huge amount of vinegar eels. They do go to the surface. I’ve actually had some that had such a high population that they climbed the sides of the glass about half an inch.

Just add more filtered water to the mix and apples as needed

Yes, I have tried putting them in the freezer and when thawed they were still alive.

Can i use coconut vinegar? Which is better, coconut or apple?

Muhammad Kevin not sure about coconut vinegar I’ve never used it. I’d start with apple cider vinegar and get a good culture going then try to start one with coconut vinegar and see what happens. If it works let me know.

I can’t answer that but I wouldn’t recommend it. Why the hell would you want to eat them?
