Vinny, do you have XMP enabled in BIOS? XMP is basically built in ram overclocking. I turned on XMP and I kept getting blue screens once every week or so. I decided one day after a blue screen to turn off XMP. I haven't had a bluescreen since.

@@superscatman4236 I was just about to come in here and say something to this likeness. I have recently got a new mainboard. With XMP enabled, it sets my RAM timings incorrectly among other things. When XMP is enabled, I can expect random crashes when not idling. I am yet to solve the problem of having XMP on, no problems with it off other than my RAM being clocked at 66%

I like what this game is going for beyond the liminal space thing, it's a nice eerie maze to run through. People miss the forest for the trees with the concept of liminal spaces, it's essentially the uncanny valley for environments, like it resembles a normal place that is familiar but feels "off" and unwelcoming, stuff like indoor pools everywhere, too many blind corners and poorly lit areas, completely blank, repetitive patterns and decoration everywhere, etc. It's always better when the concept leans more into a non-euclidean infinite purgatory more than haunted house with monster in it.

It's also one of the biggest mysteries/killers of the genre to me, almost cliche like. What makes a swimming pool or water park on its own a liminal space? Yes, a swimming complex after hours or a water park during the winter could be liminal, but a room where there's just a watery floor with pillars is just surreal, not liminal.

One liminal space I’d like to see more of is cinemas. I always have strange dreams where I end up in unusually large cinemas. Like, you go in and it’s super quiet, no people, but there’s a gigantic screen and an unusually large amount of seating that seems to stretch on for ages left and right. And sometimes screening rooms are connected and you can just walk in between them in weird ways.

Man, indoor water places like water parks and aquariums are my JAM. There’s something about the chlorinated smell that just makes me happy, along with being able to just kind of… exist and float in the water. Granted, I haven’t been able to swim in aquarium water yet, but I aim to fix that.

I used to go to a swimming club in my childhood. We'd swim in outdoor pools in spring/summer and indoors in winter/fall. The pool type liminal spaces feel so comforting and nostalgic for that reason. I imagine the pool sounds and the smell of chlorine, walking past the maze-like lockers to take a cold-ass shower before rushing to the pool and jumping in. It feels so welcoming and cozy somehow.

That's the beauty of it. The encounter exists entirely on the premise of 'fuck around and find out'. You get a bad feeling and you realize it's time to GO. And you certainly can without seeing anything. That's the Smart Choice(tm). I on the other hand decided to be a little cowardly but at the same time I wanted to see the entity. So I just chilled by the door to the next area. After several seconds the figure phased through the walls at such an angle it was right in my face with little to no warning. Or all the warning if you look at it another way. I swore and reflexively tore around ninety degrees to interact with the door and enter the next area. I have no idea what it does to you if it catches you. I can't bring myself to try just standing there like a dumbass and accepting fate.

Man this reminds me a lot of when we would go to the Wisconsin Dells during off season and it would be so empty and weird in the indoor areas. This gives off that exact same vibe. When there's only you and like two other kids in a big ancient ruins themed play area. Strangely somber but nostalgic

I have no idea what park you went to but the Dells is a booming tourist town and I have never seen less than tens of thousands of people there. It's busier than New York. @@Duskaria The added entity is a silhouette of sorts that recons the environment. Not sure how entirely his presence takes away the horror for you, since his existence is pretty subtle in the game. Liminal space horror is meant to be about the unknown and the uncanny valley for the said environment. The fact that there’s a figurine with no ideal features still follows the fear of the “Unknown”

Joel made a good point about this during his O.V.N.I Demo stream where he said the reason aliens are creepy is because their goals and motives are entirely unknown to us so giving them human traits like chasing you around or firing guns at you takes away from the fear of the unknown. This T-posing silouette chasing you dowm, slamming open lockers as it does so isn't scary, it's just another ooga booga backrooms monster.

I kinda had my own liminal experience recently. I ended up going pseudo urbexing at a local arcade & minigolf place that finally went out of business after being open for way too long. I say pseudo, because it wasn't off limits or anything, just empty and with a few people still there moving things out. A friend told me about it and I went to go see, and it was surreal. I saw a few people, mostly contractors who were hauling things out for people buying arcade cabinets and props, but otherwise it was empty. Save for the minigolf props and a few leftover courses inside the building. I never noticed as a kid, but there were support columns, and blind corners of walls in the oddest places. Add to it the scaled down building props and the like just sitting there in the dim, yellowish light with stark white floors and walls. It was legit like walking through a "backroom" at some angles. I think the building proper closed by now, but I wish I had taken my phone out and snapped some pics, it was cool. Freaky, but cool. Anyway, always cool to see new liminal stuff from Vin, even if it's just an update of a prior map.

Vinny's computer issues sound like there's a loose cable or contact there somewhere. Probably an SSD cable or RAM (on the motherboard side). It will not show on thermal, it's incredibly hard to pinpoint and it seems completely random when it happens. While the computer is working sometimes certain metallic contacts get just hot or cool enough to momentarily disrupt connectivity and BAM! Blue screen or reboot.

Love these “Liminal Spaces” videos, Vin! Glad you are still making them. I’ve recently been going back to old Call of Duty games and walking through multiplayer maps alone. There’s something subtly weird and lonely about wandering an empty MP map. Best game for this is definitely World At War - they’ve got a lot of creepy maps and ambient noises - especially Asylum, Dome, and Castle

If it helps I just want to mention that that gigabyte 1TB SSD being a PCIe 4.0 speed drive, it *definitely* requires a heatsink, usually these drives come with a bulky heatsink attached to them, but the ones that most motherboards come with for the first drive will also suffice. What can happen however, is if your GPU blows a lot of heat over the drive/heatsink, it *can* overheat the drive over time ever so slowly, and this can only need like, 1 degree in ambient temp or even a small humidity difference to trigger it. Now usually the overheat temp is upwards of 70 Celsius, but not always, in fact if you have a faulty drive with a cracked solder joint it will tend to fail unexpectedly before this. Other than that drive however, it could also be a SATA drive problem, since I've had a lot of experience with SATA cables just being unreliable annoyances, but this shouldn't manifest as a crash unless windows is installed to one of these. (will be emailing this comment to to be sure)

It's a place you would expect to find people during empty hours, so there is an eerie abandonment and even nostalgia of the place. (Sorry for the ramble) I absolutely love the concept for this game. There’s just something so specific that the imagery of this game gives me that is equal parts soothing and uncomfortable. It brings me back to the time when I was little and my mom had a membership at the YMCA. I loved that place because of the indoor pool but the space itself was incredibly noisy due to the way the sound reverberated off the walls. It made every overlapping noise coming from the space turn into a consistent drone of laughter, talking, and splashing. Not to mention the air was always so thick and humid and the smell of chlorine overpowered every other scent. Anyways, I got used to the drone of noise that accompanied indoor pools and it became a comforting expectation whenever I visited a place like a hotel that just so happened to have an indoor pool. I’ve tried swimming in an indoor pool without others around but it starts to freak me out. The only thing I can hear is my movements echoing all around me and then complete and utter silence. No birds or wind rustling the trees and bushes. No calm waves crashing into the shore, just completely dead air until I decide to move again. Swimming indoors is such an odd experience and I’ve had dreams similar to the experiences of this game where I’m inside an indoor pool, completely alone with the windows outside being completely black. I almost feel like I’m suffocating under the weight of my own reverberated movements in the water and it makes the horror aspect of this game really stand out to me as I feel so connected to this experience.

This might get wodged in all the comments, but your pc issue is identical to one I've had! If troubleshooting so far doesn't pan out, look into your power supply. If you've upgraded parts over the years but haven't increased the power supply it can cause haunted hd/ssd issues. Search a psu wattage calculator if you want to check first. Upgrading my psu fixed when fiddling with all the scarier stuff did not. Hope that helps!

Hyperbolica is about hyperbolic geometry but I still think it's euclidean (no warp connections etc)? The main shtick with hyperbolic geometry is that parallel lines diverge over time, there's more space further away than there is nearby. The game also uses the opposite a bunch, spherical geometry (parallel lines reunite again; this is much easier to visualize since it's just "the world is stuck on the surface of a sphere"). Still trippy either way though.
