Honestly, I don't think Conker's Bad Fur Day has aged particularly well. The whole gimmick of "cute N64 platformer is actually an edgy adult game" is very of its time and a lot of the game's humor is pretty low-brow. The voice acting isn't great either. Don't get me wrong, it's impressive that the entire game has voice acting, but the actors are almost constantly whispering their lines instead of just talking normally. A technical achievement, but the acting itself isn't great.

BFD perfectly encapsulates and evokes so much of the N64 era and the platforming genre while being totally irreverent and unique. I love that game and I think you’re selling the experience a bit short. Coming off the back of numerous 3D mascot platformers of the era, BFD was a really fresh and enjoyable experience that I think is still enjoyable today *if* you’re keeping that greater context in mind and immersing yourself in memories of that era, and I happen to find a bulk of the humor genuinely funny. As lowbrow as it is, it clearly draws inspiration from the likes of Monty Python, Looney Tunes, and South Park, which is all pretty high-class “lowbrow” material. The novelty of cute characters being foul has certainly waned overtime, but it’s the greater context of the game (the general gaming climate when it came out and the console it came out for) and the overall presentation that makes it so special. It’s really the gameplay where it’s lacking, but they at least made an effort to be inventive with it, and it actually paid off pretty well back then. I also don’t mind the voice acting. It was actually fairly lively and natural voice acting for it’s time, even if it’s very compressed and “whispery” as you accurately put it. Most VA in games back then was worse. Idk, I still love it. It’s really a “you had to be there” kinda thing, I guess.

But I definitely understand why it's not highly regarded. I still think it's a good game though, just not great. It’s honestly about as good as the first two. People just didn’t grow up with it like they did with 1 & 2, and it doesn’t “feel like” the first two games in terms of music, art direction, and general vibe. I love it, though. DKC3 gets an unfair shake. Also, Kiddy Kong is underrated. Just cause he isn’t as “””cool””” as Diddy and Dixie doesn’t mean he doesn’t have utility and charm.

Kiddie Kong was just misguided from a design perspective; I feel like they should have known he wasn't going to be liked. Either way I think mechanically he's not as distinguished as he needs to be, and the levels play towards Dixie being optimal far more often than not. Those things together I think are why he's particularly despised, because he's got a visual design that was never going to work for the target demographic, plus they dropped the ball on integrating him naturally into the game. Poor boy didn't have a chance lol

@@Wveth The first two games have their own BS, though. DKC3 isn’t the only one with faults or points of contention. Like it’s not just that DKC3 is underrated; it’s also that the first two games are honestly at least slightly overrated as well by fans and have their own flaws that DKC3 haters overlook constantly. I didn’t have any significant issue with a majority of the level design in DKC3 (save for a couple of the lazier or more annoying gimmick levels) in comparison to the first two, and I found Kiddy Kong worked well enough with the level designs and was generally a way better and more useful heavy-type character than Donkey Kong ever was in DKC1. He’s actually useful to have around even when you’re playing as Dixie. I think all three games are just distinct enough from one another that I can confidently say they’re all in the same ballpark of quality and each have unique advantages and disadvantages when compared to one another. People just treat DKC3 with bias because it felt too “different” in terms of presentation, and because it came out in November 1996 - months after the N64 launched and a year after the Saturn and PS1. No one cared about a new DKC at that time, so DKC3 had next to no shot at being as wanted or as beloved as the first two games no matter how good it was.

On par with the second one? Nah. The first one it completely trounces though. DKC 1 is just way too basic by todays standards, no Krem/Bonus Koins, no DK Coins, no real completionist aspect in form of something like a Lost World that would actually incentivize you to seek out all of the hidden bonus levels. Also it's by far the most aesthetically bland out of the original three in addition to a bunch of piss easy bossfights that mostly (with the exception of the Barrel and King Zing) boiled down to: jump on it 3-5 times to kill it, while it barely puts up any resistance. Oh and they also recycled both the Gnawty and Necky fights with color swapped versions. Still love DKC 1, since it was my first Video Game ever, but it just served as a solid base/stepping stone for it's much better sequels (imho 2 > 3 > 1). Literally can't think of a singular thing it does better than those.

Honestly in vinny's defense, the game is fun but gets mundane. The final boss is one of the most anti-climatic bosses, that feel like a slog for no reason. Compared to the first two games, this game doesn't compare too well. Even the soundtrack suffers from a weird style choice thats way more 'laxxed'.

I respect the love for 3. 2 is my favorite game of all time but 3 isn't far off. Its a shame 3 gets the rep it does. I always thought it was completely unjustified, but after seeing different people's perspectives recently I can understand it a bit. This game had a poor release timing and had a high bar to live up to. It also was rushed so certain parts suffer. The first couple worlds are the weakest by far, and kiddie kong is admittedly not too nice to control, so a lot of people end up dropping it. After world 2 though the game is actually just straight fire. Has many of my favorite levels in the trilogy, best bosses in the trilogy, super underrated ost, I could keep going on. I think its fair to say its the worst in the trilogy (tho I prefer it to dkc1) but it is NOT bad, not even close to it.

Yeah I'm sorry, I forgot to say that I did use a strategy guide for DKC2 back than. Also, I'm biased towards DKC2 because I love the music and map. I also prefer Diddy over Kiddy. I love everything about DKC2 more than the other 2 games. You are correct that the secrets are easier to find in DKC3. DKC2 were really tricky to find without a guide. Also Lost world was a thing. I don't remember of DKC3 had levels as difficult as some of the Lost world levels. I love the music for that too! So epic and scary at the same time.

It was the only game in the trilogy to not have David Wise involved. He composed his own soundtrack when the game was ported to the GBA and it's generally considered an improvement over what's in this game. The music isn't terrible but it's just really generic compared to how good Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2's soundtracks are.

Honestly yeah, this is easily the weakest game in the series. Weaker music, weaker levels, and very weak boss fights. Especially towards the end it really seemed like rare was running out of ideas for levels. Also, the themes for each world are super weird too, like why is the final world just another generic lake / forest? The final world in dkc1 wasnt much more epic but at least it looked different from world 1.

The boss fights are way better in this than in the first two. The game is also much more inventive than the first two, it looks better, and it has the best Kong duo in terms of functionality. It’s one big failing is it’s emphasis on collectibles, basically locking the real final boss behind mandatory collecting. I also think the soundtrack is underrated. It just had the unfortunate burden of following DKC2’s god-tier soundtrack, and they went with a different composer (Eveline Fischer). I really don’t think there’s any “clearly weak” game out of the bunch. They each have their strengths and weaknesses compared to the rest.

@@scrowfunk8109 In DKC1, you just fight giant versions of regular enemies and defeat them by jumping on them, even repeating some fights. DKC2 is a little better, but not by much. I mean ffs, you fight a possessed sword at one point. And speaking of having to wait to attack the enemy, what about the giant pirate vulture you fight? You have to wait for an egg to fall out of a nest so you can throw it at him. Same thing with the sword, you gotta wait to throw a cannonball at him. That kind of boss design really starts in that game. DKC3 bosses are way better designed and rendered, and often more creative or inventive, like throwing barrels back into the giant barrel’s mouth, or having a snowball fight with the snowman in the style of Swanky’s mini-games. The K Rool fight isn’t great, but let’s be honest. No K Rool fight is really “good”. Just saying, I can’t help but feel there’s some bias here, because as great as the first two games are, the boss fights were seriously lacking in both of them. The bosses in DKC3 are at least visually way more appealing and functionally at least as competent as the first two games’ fights.
