i still remember when PS Home did a virtual E3 booth where you could watch trailers, download demos, earn costumes, and take screenshots with standees. it was a really simplified version of what could be, but the idea was phenomenal. as dumb as Home was, it was strangely ahead of its time in some aspects. if Sony ever tried again in the PS5 era, they could probably make something actually really cool.

I mean with PSVR2 being pushed the way it is (I highly recommend it honestly) if they were gunning for the Second Life audience here back in the day with Home, I think they could offer up a VR Chat style experience on PS5! In VR or on controller, just general spaces to hang out seem like a fun idea, even if they become “dead malls” in time.

Had some good times in PS Home, mostly trying to glitch into places you're not supposed to be but there were a handful of other fun things to do
@Atylonisus
@Atylonisus 8 ай бұрын
The easiest boundary breaks all had to do with slopes and railings. I recall you could eventually manuever your way into floating positions by rapidly waggling the control stick INTO the wall as you descended slopes, and somehow your vertical height could be maintained as you should be descending -- allowing you to walk over walls or rails. You probably already recall this, but it was fun to see which maps had collisions enabled on out-of-bound areas and which would just soft-lock you into falling forever. The default Home-"home" (the personal apartment every user starts with) also could be broken by rotating long couches into the corners of the ceiling, which would clip the furniture out of the walls. You could then place it on the ceiling or even float the couch to distant parts of the map. If a furniture was close enough to your character which they were in a sitting position, you were allowed to cycle your character to be sitting in any other nearby object. This let you follow your couch out of bounds.

I think this was one of the last times where people tried to be social with one another. I'm noticing a lot of these kinds of social spaces games are dead, and MMOs are treated more like single player games these days. VR Chat's a bit different because it's more like going to a costume party to hang out with people you already know, and the user generated content and motion captured movement help add novelty. But stuff like this, Habbo Hotel, and IMVU where interpersonal interaction was a requirement and there were hard restrictions put in place on what you could do just don't have a place anymore.

Totally wasn't expecting this stream. PSHome was great, I would spend hours just chilling with my cousin and bonding with him and some online friends, whom of which I still talk to. I remember so many out of bounds glitches for maps that we would exploit so we had secret chill spots. Great times. I also remember when they gave away a mansion garage and one or two other spaces when Sony got hacked big that one time. My favorite spots to chill in were SALT, the Konami Penthouse, the SIREN Blood Curse Space and the basketball court (Can't remember that name but the radio would always be like OH BABY BAYBAYYY). Actually, I think all of the spaces were great, miss this dearly

Granzella spaces relied heavily on mini games. The beach one you visited allowed to swim even using some floaters you could buy on the store. Kikai Machine Empire was a action RPG in the vein of a previous Irem event (Granzella is the successor company to Irem) called Semifinalist Fantasia which was another action RPG they made for ONLY ONE DAY (April's Fools 2009 iirc) and only for Japan (They later made a space to remember this but lacked most of the stuff).

I played Home for YEARS. It's a social platform with avatars, and sooo much more. I was there since day 1 to close basically. I was there when it got shut down. Everyone was taking photos and videos like crazy. One of my friends went around and took over 700 pictures of ... everything. Many people did this. There were ALL types of people from ALL walks of life. I met so many interesting people. Old, young. I lost a hangout, an escape from my miserable reality, free fun little mini games, lots of friends, and a way to talk to people. I fit in. I could be whatever I wanted through my Avatar. I could express myself when I couldn't do that in real life. I could be me. I miss Home so much. It was my home. Genuinely. I had an abusive childhood and was bullied my ENTIRE school life, and I'd escape into Home every day. For YEARS. My favorite hangout spot was Motorstorm and Central Plaza. You could glitch up onto the benches. That's where I spent a lot of time, too. The Christmas version of Central Plaza had amazing snow crunching noises. It was so crisp and fresh sounding. Like it had just fallen, and you were compressing the fresh powder with your feet. I miss Home so much... All of us that used the social platform do. I think about Home every day. It genuinely was my home as a kid. It was better than my real life. I wasn't abused there. I could chat. ANY time of day, you could pop on and find people to talk to. If I was ever lonely at like 3 in the morning with notging but my own thoughts, I'd hop on Home. I want it back. 💔💔 Rogue, I miss ya. Thanks for everything.

(: I had a home apartment that had it's own movie theater room. Genuinely a great place. It was super ahead of it's time. Home would have FLOURISHED in today's environment. Even more than it already did It's CRAZY to think about. We've been talking every day for over a decade. These 2 stayed with me through thick and thin when even a fee irl friends left my life. Met them both at different times. Dude it was like we had need friends IRL since childhood lmao. It was amazing. 😊💞 I always hated the saying "online friends aren't really friends" In my personal experience, they can can even better. 🤷‍♀️ Also! CHAIN SWING LOL. I hated that song. Despised it. Now I find myself looking it up on occasion for the nostalgia. Motorstorm had genuinely great bands. Found a lot of good bands from looking up the songs they played. The Motorstorm game was an off road racing type game. So it had a lot of good early 2000s rock music, and some of the heavier rock infused R&B. Or heavy techno LOL.

I used to use Home. I spent entirely too much time figuring out how to clip through boundaries and walls, so I could be THAT guy. I'd wander just out of reach of regular users and pretend to be a lost or broken NPC The Sodium game shown at around 6:30 was a fully-released subgame you could pay for and it has upgradeable weapons, boosters, lock-on, other unlockables. Buying it gave you a personal World dedicated to the game. The real magic of this Hub world was that you could also play on restricted EU or JP servers by setting your location to those addresses and creating a new character. I remember you couldn't acquire certain clothes unless you were in Japan or Europe-only, but there was also seemingly no way to transport items across region boundaries. Even so, i once saw a man wearing what appeared to be a Cheetos Tornado equipped to their face, and I KNOW that was a region-locked item so it must have been possible.

MAN I cannot believe that there are people preserving PlayStation Home. This is so awesome. Seeing this again for the first time in almost a decade takes me on such a nostalgia trip; Vinny actually went to a few places I've been to before. The way Home was used to hype up games was so cool, and the furniture system was really neat, too. Things you placed down actually had physics so you could just stack things on top of each other in a huge mess, lmfao. What a time.

This brings back so many memories, theres a perfect world for new years i remember with campfires and fireoworks always going off, everyone always wanted to talk to you. I remember unlocking things to do outside the game, earning secret costumes, sharing the cool itmes and worlds you found whether it was a spooky maze or haunted house. Maybe you had a world that was basically a scavanger hunt. This game was beyond silly and even if it was just stuck onto some console as an advertising machine, having little money as a kid and finding this for the first time and seeing all the people, worlds with bit fantasy blimps and challenges for you to complete with strangers. I miss it.

Granzella were an offshoot of Irem who were best known for the R-Type and Disaster Report games. Sony contracted them to work for PS Home and they made a subdivision solely to make worlds which would appeal to Western audiences, such as the ones Vinny goes to in this stream. They're one of the few Japanese developers besides RGG Studio who excel at making environments which feel "lived-in" nowadays. Despite working in the Western market, they're ironically responsible for one of the PS4 games which never got an English localization, "Kyoei Toshi" which is one huge kaiju / tokusatsu celebration. I think they're releasing a new Disaster Report this year so hopefully it gets good press.

I gave PS Home a lot of shit back in the day because it felt lame alongside the other games I owned. It may also be due to Sony’s attempt to gain lots of revenue through the sale of virtual cosmetic items (yup, I hated microtransactions before it was cool). However, I’m gonna cut it slack because you didn’t have to spend any money, and you could get lots of free items and explore every space. There was also that social experience too.

I'm so glad Vinny got to visit Sodium one. you had to buy the game for 14$ but you had around 100 levels to go trough with weapon customization and like 6 different weapons to do loadouts with. Vinny only played the arena version. if he walked a little further he could had found the S1 game and played the demo. you could play until wave 5 and you'd fight a giant boss. it was wave based shooter.

Man this hits hard, I went through a deep state of depression at one point of my life. We are talking about not leaving your room for 7 months straight levels of depression and PS Home was my outlet. I made so many friends, I bought a lot of the huge player homes like Loco Island or Club Luminosity and we would have a great time. Thankfully by the time they shut it down I was better. And fuuuuuck did I play a lot of Sodium 2, the Golden Vicky statue you got for earning like a million credits was the center piece of all my homes. I've always wondered if they'll bring it back because out of all the "meta verse" crap being pushed nowadays, PS Home was the most complete and professionaly presented.

PlayStation Home is probably the most prominent and yet forgotten virtual world 'game'. Sony poured a lot of money into this service that reallu wasn't all that popular even during its peak, it was absurdly ambitious and all it really had going for it was it came free on your PS3. I still spent a lot of hours playing and receiving information overload with all the idling players and flashing lights and discordant area-specific music. One thing vinny doesn't capture here is how absolutely everything required minutes of loading screens, including trying to change your outfit. I'd love to see something more in-depth about this game sometime.
