God this game is so good, city trial mode will forever be the best mode ever. You could sink so many hours into that one mode alone, and the checklist mechanic in the game keeps you looking for new unlocks and everything. I've said it ever since the switch was released that a remake or even a sequel for Kirby air ride would be amazing on the switch with its local play between consoles (and online as well)

Glad I was able to grow up with Kirby air ride. Me and my little brothers would spend hours playing city trial together, and for some weird reason I tended to prefer air ride to Mario kart double dash. Today, air ride is still the only racing game I’m good at. It’s a shame there hasn’t been a remake of the game yet, an online mode would be SO sick.

Ahh the last game Sakurai worked on before leaving HAL, it really has that Sakurai touch to it, a simple one button racer that anyone can pick up and play. When you pause the game it has the Melee Pause SFX, on the results screen if you win the controller vibrates in tune with the Victory Theme, there’s a lot of Smash DNA in Air Ride, It was the first Sakurai game to have a dedicated Checklist with Missions and Tasks you can complete to unlock stuff, *Whispers* 🤫 You can even unlock Meta Knight and Dedede. Looks like we may get something similar to this with Dream Buffet which I’m excited for! Crazy to think that next year this game along with the Warioware series will be 20 years old, Starfox and Megaman X will be 30 years old!

Another Easter egg is that if you play meta knight on Machine Passage, meta knight’s theme plays. You might have to restart the map a couple of times to get it to play though since it’s mostly a matter of chance. Also, I can’t believe that I never noticed the melee sfx present in air ride. A pretty cool touch!

I remember when playing City Trial, me and my siblings would "joust" on the rail system against one of us with the Rex Wheelie, and the rest of us trying to destroy it. Afterwards it'd be a race to the garage to get to it first and rinse repeat.

Probably repeating a lot of other comments, but this has to be one of my favorite games of all time. I can't tell you how many times i've completed the City Trial Checklist. I remember once around the time the game came out my friend and i stayed up all night completing it, going through every mission thing to figure them out by ourselves. As a gay man I love blocking anything lgbtq related on social media. It feels empowering. What is it about so many Gamecube games' graphics that just look good, in a way that i can't describe, but it's in this fashion where there is no chance in hell that any future consoles will look like it, no matter how good graphics get, we can never return to this visual style. This game, Melee, Mario sunshine, Pikmin, Monkey ball, all Mario spinoffs form this generation, so many games from this generation just look good in a way i can never find the words to describe.

Spent hours upon hours playing the city trial mode with my lil sis. So much so that after we had played so many hours of it, we'd end up doing City Trial to where we didn't compete against each other. Just, hopped off the rides and walked around and made our own stories for each area in the game. This really is the definition of a classic game. It's a shame we can't get a remaster or remake of it, let alone a port of it to the Switch. I'd drop the big bucks for a pre-order in a heartbeat, especially if they allowed for online multiplayer. I also hope Vin comes back to this after getting a bit more knowledge of the different rides for City Trial. I swore there was either an in-game movie that explained each ride, or maybe I'm mixing that up for the game manual that listed the different rides. Not to make him become a try-hard or anything, but just so he knows what each one does for when he wants to try and do a specific build for one of the rides.

To be honest, the skill ceiling in this game is actually crazy high. Once you really get the hang of a star's mechanics, you'll be way faster than people new to the game, and there's still so much room to improve. Getting all the checklist is hard.

@@BalrogQuote I liked the Slick star a lot. There's one thing about it that usually goes unnoticed/underutilized. It's slippery body. You can turn around and blast enemies behind you with plasma or yeet a bomb further back without losing your forward momentum.

Swerve Star was my favorite, too. It has zero downside once you figure out how to use it. It has the fastest drop from mid-air and the fastest ground speed, there's no race you can lose with this thing on.

Its crazy how different stars were crazy strong depending on side rules too. Shadow Star was a really fun terror if you had healthbars on. The MASSIVE acceleration/speed it got as soon as you got into someone's backdraft was crazy to catch people out on, especially if you didnt need to worry about wing powerups or *m e t a*. Bulk Star was super fun on a few maps too if you were allowed to get straightaways after a full drift turn. Scooter just ZOOMIN on railings or jumps. I think my favorite stars were probably Winged, Shadow and Swerve though. Winged just completely changed every map to "how much air time can I maintain throughout the entire level", and there were some maps where you chained perfect landings into new glides nonstop.

TIL Smash Run is a direct reference to City Trial and a lot of tracks from this game were recycled in later kirby titles. air ride is peak HAL and yet there is no sequel

I'm so glad to see vinny play this as it's one of my all time favorite childhood games and it's deviously deep! A couple things of note: Some stars have wayyyy better stats than others, don't be afraid to experiment. 2: Pushing A while glidign will drop you instantly and provide a tiny speedboost if tapped (all speed is good in the the right place.). 3: City Mode is best mode. Hydra and Dragoon best vehicle. Best bet at achievements. Otherwise, all fun is to be had! :)

a lot of this game is fantastic but it truly is understated the amount of anticipation/hair raising vibes is when the city trial sped up music and Time's up freeze happen it is such a simple small thing but its one of my favorite small bits. like a "well done, and now... get ready...!" just so full of great details

Okay NGL this was a little painful to watch. I'm glad he likes it but good god the number of times he ignored power ups in city trial, grabbed a bomb just to blow himself up. It was painful, like one of those "most unsatisfying moments" compilation. But also a good pain. I do hope he plays this with folks who know how to play a bit better, 'cause hoowee, not even chat seemed to be helping that much. Still super glad he played it.

This is actually the game where I found out that Meta Knight had wings. Didn't really faze me it just felt natural at the time.
