I’m really glad Vinny discovered the jukebox. Most people go the whole game without hearing some of the best songs in the OST and it’s a shame. Adolescence, Resolve and Fairies are some of my favorites. And considering Fairies is just Tazmilly Village from EB64 it’s safe to assume they all are songs that were planned for that game which is a nice little taste of what could have been.

@@retrocanvhs That's presumably how a lot of puns work in Japanese - being that the phonemes are so granular it's very easy to have two words that, when stuck together, form a third word or phrase. I know it happens a lot with Japanese names for Pokemon, so I assumed something similar was at work here.

I'm convinced the Pork Bean is just a massive troll from the devs. Unless you know exactly what you're doing with it ahead of time, you lose it, either to running out of charge or overcharging it. I'm sure almost everyone loses it somehow on a blind playthrough, and I'm sure that's intentional.

ChaosKirby Let me describe the Mother 1 Experience for you: It's EarthBound, but with a single massive world map where the only indication of where you should be is how difficult the local enemies are, and there is exactly one NPC who provides anything resembling a clue to the locations of the Eight Melodies. For one, you need to buy a chick from a pet store and reunite it with its mom at the zoo; for another, you have to use the Telepathy PSI on a cactus in the desert. Also, the permanent party members are optional. I don't remember there being any reason to travel to Snowman except to recruit Ana. So basically, it's a sandbox, but when you step into it, it's actually quicksand and you immediately drown.

So, if to break down the party as I remember it, Lucas fills the same niche as Ness; he's support with healing and buffs/debuffs, basic attack hits hard, and has a nuke (PK Love in this case). Kumatora is the 'mage' and packs tons of PSI, primarily damage based ones, but does get some support and eventually learns PK Starstorm and PK Ground. Duster has no PSI, but his tools are good for debuffing and inflicting status effects. Boney doesn't really have much (he is a dog), but also has incredible speed, often being the first to go. So, through that, you can have him carry all the attack/healing items if you're in a pinch. Though as a side note: the best PSI Lucas can learn (Refresh) and Kumatora can learn (Starstorm and Ground) require a *lot* of grinding at the end and may take a while. However, you can beat the game without them

@@theleafeon1 Refresh and Ground are learned late-50s/early-60s, though remembered Starstorm is learned through a special event. But the reason Refresh is especially good is that it's basically Regen. Affects the whole party and triggers at the start of a turn. Especially with how lenient the rolling HP is in Mother 3 compared to Earthbound, it's a literal lifesaver

Really wouldn't say it's much of a plot twist. The game gives you ample hints, so figuring it out is really simple. The real plot happens far earlier in Chapter 8, not gonna spoil anything.

SPOILERTALK I think it's because it's not a twist. Itoi's not dumb, and considering game not only gives you this hint, but later straight up helps you connect two and two together (one of the epilogues pretty much hammers "WHO COULD THIS MAN BE?!" into you), I feel like this was done more for emotional build up. The presense of Porky and Claus being his commander are two really obvious things, but both don't feel like twists. With Claus the question isn't who he is, but why he's like that. As soon as you understand it, you're just filled with uncertainty about his well-being. He seems to have robotic parts, that much is obvious, but is he alive? Even the reveal is more depressing than surprising with Flint hoping that finally, he brough back some of his family together again. Porky was pretty much foreshadowed since EarthBound, but he's not mentioned enough that you might doubt yourself. It all should connect in another obvious-yet-not-surprising scene with his room, where it becomes obvious that kid's really fucked up (I assume one of the reasons is that he was beaten by his dad), and then New Pork City, where his fascination with Ness and co., and his mother (no presense of his dad) become obvious

The commander is “Meaty” from mother 2. It’s a great reference that you’ll see at the end of the game where Lucas dies and kumatora learns PK lifeup and heals him. Hinawa also comes back in the form of a man and Claus still lies dead on that cliff. Flint and lighter get engaged and duster meets his broom.

I read a walkthrough guide for how to beat him, and grinded beforehand, abusing the revitalization machine, the electric zap enemies at the top of the tower are easy to beat for exp too.

I think he mentioned something about having his emulator set up a certain way for the combos in an earlier stream? In any case with Visual Boy Advance at least the rhythmic timing is messed up somehow making accurate combos more difficult to pull off. I read of another GBA emulator that's more accurate (I don't remember what) but if you're using VBA with default settings then I wouldn't be too upset about it. When I played this game some years ago at least I never grasped the combo system at all (and reading about the emulation issue confirmed that there was no point in me trying), mashing buttons much of the time, hoping for the best. Somehow I got through the game without much issue.

I'd sincerely argue that the 'joke' of the game punishing you for not reading the sign isn't worth the frustration it creates, particularly considering how the Pork Bean's earlier tutorials were spoon-fed to the player - and multiple times, at that. Then again, one of the most notable things about this game is the fact that it _will_ kick you in the dick if you underestimate it, as Vinny has already experienced... Still, it's a dick move.

I'd say it's less of a joke and more of just not reading the sign before charging the bean, Upon my first time playing I never overcharged the bean because I got out to read exactly what the station does, of course not everyone is going to have the same mentality but this isn't the devs having a chuckle because you ran yourself in a corner. I see where you're coming from though.

@@juqaviesp Calling it a joke is giving it the benefit of the doubt - as a joke it's honestly a pretty damn good one. You have this future-tech hovercar that works by principles you probably don't comprehend, so why would you take how it works for granted? The problem is that when that happens in a game - particularly one _this_ hand-holding when it comes to giving the player information - it feels like a betrayal, and is going to be more frustrating than funny. Then again, considering just how much more brutal and punishing Japanese games tent to be, maybe it's just me being too sensitive.

I dunno, it seems pretty obvious that you have to read the sign first to get how to use it, it's right next to the station for a reason, and it's probably the first station you're gonna see, so the "joke" is only for the impatient people that don't wanna read any sort of signs or get tutorialized in anyway.
