Like you said, anime is a medium. Unfortunately, it's also an industry; the tropes and genres that sell are propagated out of necessity. That being said, no not every anime is a highschool SoL, or generic isekai. Get someone informed to give you actual recommendations and listen to chat and comments sparingly and you'll definitely find other series and movies to enjoy.

Absolutely. The tropes are fun to laugh at but anime has had plenty of great art and storytelling to tell. Not to sound too pushy but something I hope Vinny might start doing is taking a look at some songs, OPs, or maybe something else that is short, to the point, and well produced. I bring this up because I was thinking of Tank! when Vin mentioned Cowboy Bebop.

@@Berry_Bruiser Being too pushy is one of the bigger problems of the anime community. Well. Less pushy and more "overwhelmingly enthusiastic." Kinda similar to the Undertale community. I know it doesn't come from a negative place, but it can turn people away. ...I've actually been trying to be less pessimistic about anime since I made some friends who like it. It's just still too... much. Any ideas how to reverse some of that negative thinking?
@Berry_Bruiser
@Berry_Bruiser 3 жыл бұрын
@@sillykola50 It would be easier if I knew what exactly turns you away from anime. You mentioned that 'it's just too much' but I seriously doubt I couldn't find a mundane anime thats just about cooking or basketball that barely has any of the stereotypes of anime. The only way those shows could be too much is if you just hate things that are just a part of the cores of creating anime, like using still photos but adding sound effects and some visual movement overlays/zooming/etc to fill run time. The only thing I think I can really say atm is that if you look for the pit falls of creating anime then you will definitely find them in even some of the best anime shows and movies. However, if you can get around some personal biases and even some bad choices of the person/people who made the manga/anime then you can find a lot of gold sitting right under the surface.
@DiabloGraves
@DiabloGraves 3 жыл бұрын
"I need to take my time with stuff" Yeah, that's the right attitude to have honestly. Sure, there are a few anime movies and series that are near-unanimously acclaimed and I hope you get around to them eventually, but you don't want to binge-watch the good stuff, especially the first time you see it and double-especially for things that have been around long enough to generate influence on other works. Let it seep in; if it's solid and its themes are rooted in relatable, human concepts (and even wild sci-fi stuff will have that), it won't take long before you start seeing it be relatable in other aspects of your life, which is how the ideas and inspirations come out. When it's saturated and you feel you're ready to try something else, you'll know.

We do need to get Vin to watch some Studio Ghibli. Most of their films aren't "too anime" for him to enjoy, and it's hard for *anyone* not to be captivated by them. Hell, I'm only two years younger than the dude and it still tickles me. I get it though. If you've never been exposed to it as a medium and only through what the general populous likes and shoves in your face or even through his unfortunate associations via Sunday streams it can taint the idea of it all for sure. Even now the comment section is throwing out so many things and names without solicitation and not making an argument for *why* someone may be interested in the thing other than being "This is an amine I like you might to" It's like recommending random movies without understanding why someone likes a genre in film. I'm really glad he went with Akira for his first dip into the story art though as much like Miyazaki films it really transcends the crunchy roll stigma of what ever is the new hotness this month/year and is just a damn great movie with stunning animation and story telling. Here's hoping it opens the doors for him and with someone like Ross it should be easier and easier to get him to maybe take a shot at stuff like Jin-Roh, GiTS or even as a series CBBB.

I think Vinny's tastes in anime are more similar to mine that I realised. I prefer when anime portrays people as people, not as "anime" characters, and it's that grounded mentality that's just lacking in modern anime at large. This is usually why I gravitate towards seinen anime nowadays, but even some outside that subgenre have surprised me from time to time. With that in mind here's some recommendations if anyone else is looking for more anime films/series you might like, more in line with this style. Films: Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2, Macross Plus (OVA), Royal Space Force, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Paprika, Redline, Sword of the Stranger, Jin-roh, and Sky Crawlers. Series: Planetes, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, GunGrave, Trigun, Outlaw Star, Moribito, Parasyte, Boogiepop Phantom, Speed Grapher, Le Chevalier D'eon, Welcome to the NHK, Kino's Journey (2003), Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor, and Shiki. I've limited myself there, but if anyone's in the same boat as Vinny, hopefully you'll be able to find more shows you'll enjoy from that list.
@mauvedragontiddies9244
@mauvedragontiddies9244 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, a lot of shows I've never heard about. I didn't know 'Welcome to the NHK' was "real" in any way, always avoided it because anime slice of life tends to be shit, so I might actually check it out now. And some of the others, if I haven't watched them yet, are on my list, might add the ones I haven't heard of to it too if they interest me, thanks! Just a shot in the dark, but have you heard about Death Parade? I love it as it is, but the concept is so much greater, and a shame it never got another season. It has some silly anime stuff, mostly thanks to a fangirl character, almost felt like a quota they had to achieve. Maybe you should check it out. Don't be distracted by the opening, it's infamous for being misleading.
@NintendanGX
@NintendanGX 3 жыл бұрын
@@mauvedragontiddies9244 NHK is surprisingly good, I reckon you'll like it. It's about a man who suffers from crippling social anxiety, to the point where he's become a NEET, or Hikkikamori. He's convinced himself it's all a conspiracy that he's become a shut-in, and dilludes himself. It's both a dark comedy and psychological drama, where he meets a girl willing to help him gradually build is self-confidence back up. Some scenes are really uncomfortable, but I applaud the creators for not glorifying the subject matter like most slice of life shows would. And I saw Death Parade a while back and really enjoyed it. Even without a second season, it felt like the story ended on a satisfying note, narrative-wise.

@Bufudyne thats a fucking stellar list. Especially Welcome to the Nhk, Vampire Hunter D, Lain, Paprika etc. Though, Boogiepop can be even more obtuse than Lain to get into, due to being an arc to an already ongoing story. Id also suggest Galaxy Express 999, Gurenn Lagann, and Space Pirate Captain Harlock. The original Gundam series cant hurt either, or Gundam:Origin

I will say, even some of the anime that I have seen that gravitate towards the anime tropes while also having a sense that it knows what it is or they become an important, actually well written part later on. Kill-La-Kill is a crazy ride with anime tropes and a bat shit insane story (also incredibly unique animation even among anime), but the tropes of fanservice actually play into the plot later and teach a good moral about being comfortable with being yourself. It's overall a great watch, and the English dub is absolutely god-tier in terms of writing and line delivery.

Vinny saying he needs to discover stuff on his own is the right stance to take. With a fanbase his size, people are going to be throwing around recommendations like nothing and it'll be impossible to know which ones to take as anime fans tend to get desensitized to stuff that would turn any "outsider" off. At this point, more than 15,000 anime exist with a good 40 or so getting added every season. Unless you just hate drawings, I imagine almost everyone would find several to like, maybe even reaching low triple digits. But digging through them requires either time or a friend that not only knows what he's talking about, but knows the tastes of the person he's recommending stuff to. The closest person to Vinny on that is probably Ross, but he's not some mega history weeb, he's a dude that watches tropey mainstream stuff like My Hero Academia which Vinny would hate. So yeah, hard to know the route forward here for Vinny if he truly does want to pursue this.

I'm not as well versed in anime film outside of Ghibli, but I imagine there's a ton of 80s and 90s stuff that would appeal to him. I am so hyped that Binyot enjoyed Akira. It's truly a strange but great journey to view. Hope he checks out other good anime.

As much as I want to suggest animes that I like it might be worth giving a shot I totally understand where he's coming from about being overwhelmed and being pushed into a genre or new medium can sometimes have the opposite effect and honestly I rather would let him discover things on his own pace and potentially have more of a acceptance with anime at the medium then overwhelm him with suggestions that may contribute to him stepping back from it

If you like dystopian realism and alternate future timeline type shit, with Wolfenstein style, check out Jin Roh of the Wolf Brigade. Pretty decent stuff too. It's a what-if anime about Germany winning WW2 and the effects of socialism and authoritarianism in Japan afterwards.
