in the air ride clip, that minigame has a bunch of speedboost strips on the runway, they're the little shimmering stripes. pressing A to make your ride touch the ground on those strips gives you a speedboost, but vinny didn't have to do that because his wheelie scooter is always touching the ground, so he got them just by riding over them
