Now, I ain't no graphics design extraordinaire, but lemme tell you, the character design for Volleyball Hominid is DISGUSTING! They look straight out of the bad side of Filmation with a nice blend of Chuck Jones, and when they cheer it's even worse. But alas, this is the only game made anywhere on Earth that features cavemen playing volleyball, unless there's some kind of lost Flintstones sports game floating about the far recesses of... w-whenever, so we make do with what we got.

It appears that William Shatner's Tekwar came out about 3 months before Duke 3D, and its levels look a bit more detailed than Duke 3D's do. So it's technically Duke 3D before Duke 3D, and technically slightly more advanced.

Yeah it looks really interesting, not so much because of Shatner's involvement but because I saw little details like a street fountain, and a stand alone building that looked like it could be walked around. Wikipedia tells me that the Build engine was released in September 1995 and Tekwar came out about a month later. Unless they were using a pre release build that's some FAST development time. You know, for as awesome as Duke 3D was, and still is thanks to continued fan development, some parts of the level design always struck me as odd. I mean there were game engine limitations of course but the giant rotating gears in the prison, and the bizarre system for accessing the bank vault, which also involved giant rotating gears, always struck me as weird, and I'm not even counting the space levels because weirdness there can be excused. I'm also not counting stuff that the aliens probably did, like fill a prison cell block with toxic waste.

I haven't played it so it could be terrible, but I actually kinda like the disconnect between story and gameplay present in Tekwar, because at least there's a story to speak about. In the early era of FPS, the best story one would expect is "Damn, those Alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride!", and top creators in the genre like John Carmack were saying shit like “Story in a game is like story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not important." Carmack may be a genius on the technical side, but fuck that take in particular, some of the best stories I've experienced have been in videogames! Back then you could only get stories that were worth a damn from RPGs or Adventure games, and nobody really tried to make FPS stories interesting besides Shatner and his ghost writer I guess. I'm glad I grew up in the 00's, and was able to play FPS like Halo, Bioshock, the Arkane games, ones where the writers are actually trying.

RPGLB comes from people that left AGDQ. I don't enjoy GDQ so much now (as an online event), but the actual speedruns are still enjoyable by themselves. Sometimes feel a bit robotic because the admins are always pressuring the runners. But there are some that are still pretty good and enjoyable. As for ESA, have seen little but I enjoyed a lot the PSX/PS2 YugiOh runs. I'll see more eventually, it's a darn good event. :D Also by far my favourite is RPGLB and it keeps active most of the year with marathons and competitions (Lufia, FF4, DQ, etc). It's great.
