She sounded like she could have stayed on that final note for hours. There will never be another Sutherland.

Even at 63 her voice was massive. Soprano's today can't touch her

Even younger sopranos struggle with sudden changes between low and high tones of this sequence, but not Sutherland. She is superb in every sense, operatic Godess.

It's amazing that Dame Joan sang the most difficult repertoire extremely well so late in her career. Her final Lucia was in 1988. Her final Norma and Lucrezia in 1989. By 1990 at her farewell performance she stated "the old voice is starting to wind down"...but a wound down Dame Joan is better than most in their prime.

That final Dflat would have been superb from any soprano at any age. She was truly the voice of the century in this repertoire!

She was 62 years, 6 months, and 24 days old here ! This is a televised performance at Barcelona's GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU on 31 May 1989 with Alfredo Kraus, Martine Dupuy, Simone Alaimo and cond. Richard Bonynge.

Notice that she is not the only long-lived singer here. Alfredo Kraus, who also had an astounding technical mastery of his voice, is also over 60 yet sound better that any currently performing tenor of any age.

@wilsonwatt9283 fully agree. They kept their total instruments in such shape. Should be well studied by those attempting to reach Parnassus as both Sutherland and Kraus did.

It is quite revealing here what she could do when she no longer was worried about preserving the voice. What a shame that she did not do the three Donizetti queens in her late period. I saw her as Bolena in Chicago and she was spectacular. Recordings and films show she was also a great Stuarda. Why could she not have done Elisabetta as well is a mystery. Here she shows that the role was clearly within even her latest voice capacity and she might have brought a really different dramatic perspective to it.

I’ve said this before, but she had no interest at all in singing in Devereux”. She disliked Elizabeth I and when I asked her about the role she said the role contained too much yelling and pushing on the chest voice.
