The fact that she's alive also meant that she can undo the personal wrong she had done before she died. She's excited because she can be forgiven.

@clarev.3774 жыл бұрын
Vlad Cirus Not really?? Not according to history. It was somewhat the norm for most Danes and Vikings. Even if it’s not based on accurate representation of the time period, the show emphasizes that most Danes do this according to the dinner scene with the English family, so it’s not just Askeladd’s particular group that’s “bad.” Not only that, the English army did the same thing where they killed all the Danes, including the women and children, to cause this war in the first place in the show, and they’re not pirates.

Vlad Cirus That’s not true. Viking culture was amazingly rich. The only thing that differs is the mentality of Vikings to people today about the price of a human life (due to religion). There is no reason that a human life is above the life of any other organism and yet a lot of people do think that a human life is more important and this is because of judaism, christianity and islam. These religions and many other newer present day religions boast that human life is sacred and should never be taken. This has lead to massive changes in the mindset of most people. Today if you are a murderer you are condemned and rightly so because there is no reason to kill in the present day however just over 100 years ago there was plenty of reasons to kill another human and for it to be justified in many different ways. So no I do not believe the Vikings had no morals or rules or “nothing” as you claim.

This episode is poetic and has a mystical aura with the religious themes involved, and you feel how terrible it could be a blizzard and overall the winter with these atmospherical sounds, the final scene with the dawn is amazing too, no matter if the night before was consumed a bloody tragedy, the world keeps going and a new day arrives. Indeed this episode is called "light of the dawn".

It's interesting how everyone forgets how we've seen Askeladd and his men do this before. We literally watched Thorfinn befriend a family only to see them later fall victim to one of these raids. The show successfully puts us on their side, then reminds us of exactly what that means. Something to remember, Thorfinn sat there and watched the massacre in this episode too.

Saw this on reddit: Some interpretation the priests comments: The brothers try to impress the priest with their love for each other, but that sort of love - loving someone close to you who loves you back and treats you well in return - while it's a good thing, it's the easiest, most common form of love. This is why the priest says it's "wonderful" but not what he's looking for. Loving your friends is easy, loving a stranger is much harder: this is why when the priest asks the brothers if they would have his back, they answer that they wouldn't; because they don't really know him and don't trust him. The hardest love of all, though, is loving your enemy. This is the sort of love Jesus preached, and it's the sort the priest is talking about. This is why he's transfixed by the story of Thors: Thors is someone who loved his enemies enough to spare their lives, at the likely cost of his own.
@thewandering014 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's like the different forms of love that Christian-Greek philosophers classified, Eros, Philia, Agape, etc. Love of a man for his wife (or wife for a husband) is different from the love between brothers, which is different from love for a child, etc. I think the priest is obsessed with Agape, which is considered the highest form of love, the love of God to humankind, that loves without conditions, no matter if someone does something to hurt or disappoint or upset you, to always have charity in your heart for all people. That's why he's struck by Thors, because to have love like that even for your enemies, to not kill them even despite them attacking you with the intent to kill you, is a little piece of the sort of love he believes is missing or absent from the world.

In manga it was shown much more them raping and killing the villages, in this anime they really delayed showing how cruel the Vikings are to people they attack. One of the reasons Thorfinn was trying to sleep in the stables and seeing his nightmare was because all the horrible things happening outside.
@robertcampbell80704 жыл бұрын
I don't think you've read it in awhile. I just reread the chapter because I didn't remember any raping in this village, and the manga presents it in almost the exact same way. You see the axe fall, and then come away bloodied, once, and that's it. Edit: realized you said "villages" as in throughout the series, not "villagers" as in just this village. I'll leave my original response, but realized I misunderstood your comment.

@@robertcampbell8070 Well you corrected your reply already and yes I was trying to say that earlier episodes of anime didn't show properly how cruel the vikings were and what Thorfinn was seeing when growing up compared to manga. Yeah, this episode was made to remind everyone that even though we follow Askeladd's band, and that they can be funny or charming at times, they are not GOOD people. And to be fair, Askeladd did have a point. He couldn't let them go, and he didn't have enough food for them and his men.
@CP1104 жыл бұрын
Askeladd had a point but it only had to be done because he led his men there, if they were never there they wouldn't have a need to kill them. So it's still hard to justify having to kill a whole village solely because of your men's presence there.

The "I feel elated now" can be taken in a couple of ways. You could say that it's a mistranslation, 'cause what she says is more along the lines of "My heart is racing", so she may be talking about her stress. I however, take it as her realizing that stealing a ring was nothing. She's seen what real evil is, and so now no longer fears for her soul over something so trivial as pretty theft. It put into perspective just how insignificant her sin was, and how in a world where people can be THIS evil, surely God can forgive a ring. So her family may be dead, but now she has no doubt that she'll be with them again.

Its messed up but Askeladd was being merciful in a way. (as messed up as that line of thinking is) His troops needed that food to survive so they were not going to leave without it but that would have meant leaving the villagers without any food at all to slowly starve to death over the winter. Giving them a quick death is a mercy in this situation. Its a judgement made purely in heartless logic but it isn't wrong.
@sota3314 жыл бұрын
true that man. although we could assume that some other factor can come in play to give them food or aid survival but also those villagers are going to snitch, which will fuck up Askelaad, so he had to do what he had to do to further his goal. At the end of the day, both Askelaad and the villagers are fighting for their own self-preservation/survival.

Also of they don't kill the kids they might end up with another Thorfin who can actually kill people in their sleep or a kid with the hatred of Askelaad but with the genetic potential of Thorkell. Askelaad makes himself an enemy with his cruelty so he has to make sure his enemies never survive long enough to cause him trouble. None of this is humane of course

I think her being elated meant that she was happy that she was a sinner and away from her family because that kind of death is what she wasn't willing to pay to go to heaven. That's why she kept the ring on after seeing her family die. Because she is okay with being a sinner because it saved her.

It’s important to note that the real Vikings did not round up and kill everyone in villages, this is something that Askeladd chose to do in this particular situation because if he didn’t kill them all then they would have told the English where they were and all of Askeladd’s men would have been killed including Askeladd. This would obviously have stopped Askeladd’s plan to protect his Roman Celtic people in Wales from the Danes so he did the only thing he could.
