Thank you for another wonderful chat on Vinland Saga, Merphy! I'm far from a manga expert, but I'm feeling less and less like a newbie as we go through this journey, and my appetite is increasing for more manga!

Both Vagabond and Ruroni Kenshin are great, but both have some major flaws imo to be tackled by Philip and Merphy. Vagabond....its last chapter release was in 2015. What we have till now is amazing, but it still makes it hard to recommend to anyone. Ruroni Kenshin- it falls more in regular shonen genre, so while Kenshin is a pacifist, he is forced to resolve to violence to solve violence in each arc because a shonen likes regular battles more than thematic ones

Hild is a beautiful reflection of thorfinns character. Be ready to fully cry in the later chapters I won't say which😜.

That one moment in Arc 4 with Hild brought me to tears with just one line. You probably know what I'm talking about if you read it

Thorkell reminds me of a young Dalinar from the Stormlight Archive, specifically in the flashback chapters in Oathbringer. They have so many similarities in position, personalty and portrayal. And while they are certainly not good people, seeing how war hungry they are, it can still be fun reading about them.

At first I wanted Floki to get his just desserts, but at this point I was dreading Thorfinn finding out about him. I dont want Thorfinn to be anywhere near him I really want to see what answer Thorfinn reaches, we can see from the world around us, he failed, but he still gives me a hope that there is one

I think the best way to describe the look in Thors and Thorfinn's eyes is "Uncompromising." They have the eyes of a person who will not waver in their ideals, and they achieve their goals at great personal expense rather than put anyone else at risk. Compare that to Floki who was literally too scared to fight Thors so he hired Askeladd. No wonder Floki felt judged. It might be obvious but I think that's also why Thorkell will never really understand them. He's also uncompromising in his beliefs, he wants to do everything himself, but he cant recognize his selfishness. The reason Thorkell could never be a true warrior isn't because he loves killing too much, but because a true warrior only fights on the behalf of others. And I don't think that's possible for Thorkell as much as I love him

2 quick tidbits as I've been adoring these discussions. It would be interesting to figure when the crossbow was actually invented, but they've been in the story since book 1 when the Franks were having their territorial infighting. Granted, we had that toad of a general when the artstyle was still in development, but I don't feel Yukimura-sensei would have let "tools of the trade" (in this case crossbows) slide in with all his research. The Frank Snipers had a bunch, the assassin Askeladd hired for his fake dead prince plot had one. What Hild did create, was a quick reload crossbow. In the end notes, it's mentioned this is specifically something designed to display Hild's ingenuity and resolve, she knows most men still strain to reload a crossbow, so inventing a system what lets a "weak woman" reload twice as fast as the average soldier AND at close range is just genius that makes sense from the girl shown to build a bench saw earlier. The differing mentor figure is definitely important, but I think there might be a point to make that, when Thors died, Thorfinn was about 6 years old. When Hild's dad died, she was close to twice that age, and again, a far more logistical thinker. The emotions remain, but by that age Thorfinn had already been scrambling on the battlefield for 6-8 or so years. She's an echo of his past self, albeit a much smarter one. He was a wild wolf, to her already accomplished engineer. Ironically, you could argue she got more of Askeladd's smarts than Thorfinn despite not growing up with him, although absolutely none of his sly cunning and no interest for it either whatsoever.

The reason why some don't like arc 1: Thorffin is mostly a side character in his own story and for many people manga/anime is supposed to be the place where you go for flamboyant and strong personality type protagonists. Arc 2 on the other hand actually has Thorffin as the focus, but scales down the action a lot, and similarly, for many manga/anime is where you go for crazy over the top action. So that's why some dislike it. Arc 3 is more balanced, with the action and the focus on the protagonist. But it does suffer because of the plot, mainly the end with the Ymir guy and the fact we never even get to see Greece.
