Nah the Sentai dub is way too formal and unnatural. It sounds wayyy too theatrical, like rehearsal for a Shakespeare play, instead of people actually arguing and threatening each other. The reason for this is that Sentai try to translate directly, which is very awkward and leads to over explanations and weird insults/phrases. Things that makes sense in Japanese, but not in English. Meanwhile, Netflix's dub is more of a localization and takes more liberties to make it sound authentic and less like a translation of a Japanese viking story.

Thors voice in the Sentai dub is undeniably better. No disrespect to Greg Chun but his voice is too high and light to play someone like Thors. Kirk Thornton as Askeladd was a fantastic choice, but sometimes his voice is too smooth and not low enough for Askeladd. The Sentai actor actually has a little more gruff, but I blame that more on the voice direction; Kirk's capable of doing a gruff deeper voice.

people will always just blindly hate netflix ( which is kinda deserved bc they are a shit company making the stupidest decisions ) but it sucks that even when they do something good like the dub it gets shit, not because it's bad but because people are just biased against netflix or outright hate netflix. - ive watched a hundred anime dubbed and the netflix one was easily among the best, because none where bad and ranged from good to exceptional.( it also helps that the cast was small and some of the best voice actors had the most screen time like Askeladd.) but i think it's generally always weird to hear the same character's speak differently and with a different voice so it only seems logical to call what's different bad or inferior. i love askeladd and if i heard him any other way i would definitely not like it even tho other versions are probably just fine. i mean it's somewhat like falling in love with a girl and liking everything about her including her voice and then her voice changing for some reason. it's just not what you fell in love with. but thats just a hypothetical situation, irl i ofc would never have a girlfriend XD nor stop loving her even if she lost her voice entirely. sorry for the ramble i don't have friends that enjoy talking about this kind of shit.

But the part with the men who were in conflict actually sounded better in the Netflix dub. The blonde guy's voice with Netflix was gruff and the cursing made it believable while the Sentai voice actor sounded amateurish and just wasn't a good fit. The ponytail guy sounded good in both version, but his lines were way better in the Netflix version. However, minus that part, the writing overall was just better in the Sentai version. Overall I'm actually gonna give it to the Sentai dub. They're working with a primarily fresh cast which I can highly appreciate, and even listening to this scene, the Netflix dub makes the chain speech sound TOO anime-ish (which I get it, "Vinland Saga's an anime, of course it does dumbass!"). In the Sentai dub, Halfdan sounds incredibly punctual and you can't really read his emotions as much, which makes him that much scarier. Basically, Netflix dub sounds like it tries too hard, Sentai dub makes him sound more threatening by making him sound... less threatening.

Answer to your 2nd question: the Sentai dub will only be included with its physical release that comes out August 31st (it will not likely stream anywhere unless if its HiDive, but even then it's very unlikely) whereas the Netflix dub probably will be released soon internationally (we don't currently have an official date as it is currently only on Netflix Japan) but it probably won't receive a physical release. Long story why there are 2 dubs: So for context, Amazon Prime had the streaming rights to the show (sub only) and since Amazon doesn't typically dub their shows or provide them with physical releases Sentai had not only gotten the physical release rights to the show but for a while now we've known that they were providing their own English dub, probably exclusive to the physical release. Meanwhile, while Netflix has typically dubbed their shows, they don't do too many physical releases. But it seems Netflix has now (at least on Netflix Japan) have gotten the rights to stream the show & have provided their own English dub. Note: We assume, it will soon be streamed internationally on Netflix, but we don't have any official date when this will be. However, that means the show will only be physically released with Sentai's dub. Notably, Sentai has provided physical releases for Netflix streamed shows before, and probably due to the cost of the Netflix dub's, Sentai has usually made a 2nd English dub for these shows physical releases therefore excluding the Netflix dub. Ex. "Hero Mask" Similarly, in the case of shows that were streaming only on Amazon Prime but, has since gotten a Sentai physical release, it has allowed shows that had previously only had a sub, to now have their own (& only) English dub. Ex. "Dororo" & "Babylon" (2019) Vinland Saga is unique due to the rather quick release period between both the Netflix dub & Sentai English dubs as shows like "Hero Mask" had already been streaming for awhile before Sentai got the physical release rights; although I suppose in this case the show has been streaming on Amazon for a while, moreover it's just interesting that this show has 3 companies involved with its "first time release" be it streaming, physical, &/or new dub. Anyways I hope this helps.

@@tankjackson698 You'll have to buy the Blu-ray (comes out August 31st) to get Sentai's English dub as I don't think HIDive, where Sentai typically streams their shows, has the streaming rights. Amazon Prime, at least here in the West, has the streaming rights to the original Japanese dub whereas (we assume) sometime soon Netflix will internationally release their English dub but we probably won't see a physical release that includes the Netflix dub (as they don't do to many physical releases & Sentai seems to have the physical rights to Vinland Saga.)

Idk maybe because netflix would want owner ship over the dub they make and its revenue, so they made there dub themselves. Ir the other way around with sentai

Sentai sounds more deeper and refine

for the most part I give the trophy to sentai but the Netflix dub scream seemed a lot more excruciating and realistic

I prefer the Netflix dub, even tho it doesn’t sound really fitting for that time period.

There are 2 dubs? When did this show get dubbed at all?!?!
@user-mf8oy4xd8i3 жыл бұрын
the first dub is exclusive to Japanese Netflix (for some reason) the re-dub exists probably cause Sentai didn’t wanna pay too much for the VSI dub (which was what happened to Baki and Kakergui)

sentai is more accurate to the but Netflix was more smooth I think

That's funny my thoughts are the opposite. The Netflix dub is closer to the subtitles while the senti dub flows better.

Also to note for the Sentai dub, if you want it legally, it probably won't be streaming (on HiDive, where many Sentai titles stream) so you'll have to get the physical release (at least here in the West not sure if it will be different elsewhere).

Sentai also has terrible mixing. They don't even feel like characters in a environment, but inside a recording booth.
