FYI, those who were excited to go to war, it's because in Norse mythology, those who die as Warriors (fighting, and in war, in battle) get to go to Valhalla after they die, instead of Hel. That's why everyone is excited to go to battle.

Thors did desert the Jomsvikings. In the very first scene, he dived into the sea mid battle, faking his death. That was 15 years ago. However, seeing that Floki (one of the Jomsvikings leaders) came to Iceland specifically for him shows that they didn't really buy his "death" thus, to them, he's a soldier who deserted the army which is usually unforgivable. Jomsviking is pronounced in two parts: Yoms (the J is pronounced Y) and Viking Thors the Troll is a nickname he got among the soldiers because he was just that deadly lol

A small correction: 1- About your sword theory, the sword Thros threw was not his, but his enemy's. 2- In the opening scene of this episode, the Danes were ambushed by soldiers following the orders of a king, the king you were thinking of was King Harald (king of Norway), but here these soldiers were English, so they followed another king. Also, about the war thing, it's not that Thors is sad because he knows what war is, he is sad cause he is not like the rest of them, keep in minde that vikings live to die in battle to go to valhala, that's why everyone is exited for war, they are pagans, they live to die in battles for the glory of Odin and Thor and the nordic gods. And, just in case you don't know, Vinland Saga is set around 200-250 years after Vikings (the TV show)

Thors is 'the Troll' as in a huge, strong creature from Norse mythology, not a modern 'troll'. It's a compliment to his fighting ability, not a comment on his desertion

I get the feeling this is going to be one of those cases where the viewers seemingly have zero context for anything - even things like "England", "Denmark", "Norway" or "Iceland" - and are basically seeing this all as though it might as well be taking place in Westeros.

I feel like I'm being an overly critical dick, but it's a pet peeve of mine when people gloss over basic exposition on what's going on and then end up getting lost and making dumb speculations based on completely wrong details because they couldn't be bothered to take in the information that was already given: -In the _past,_ the _ancestors_ of people now living in _Iceland_ were driven out of _Norway_ by _Harald:_ the _first_ king of _Norway._ -Settlements of _Danish_ people living in _England_ were attacked by the king of _England._ -Additionally, one of the _Danish_ victims of these attacks was the sister of _Sweyn:_ the king of _Denmark._ -In response to this, _Denmark_ has declared war on _England._ Maybe for some people that's a lot of information to take in? It just seems like you have to miss a _lot_ of details to be told all this and then be like "Ah, so that evil king what's-his-name of wherever is attacking people... somewhere? So now people from somewhere are fighting people, uh.. somewhere?"

It can be REALLY jarring when someone just straight out flies over details and becomes unsurprisingly confused later on (if not immediately). It makes watching their reactions less entertaining since they don’t really know context, even though it’s explicitly stated half the time. I get that it feels Dickish though. People watch the way they watch, and it’s not their fault they didn’t study a history textbook before watching. Some people are just… i don’t think if “better at watching” is the right term I guess you know what I mean. No disrespect to these guys tho

I believe this is just the natural response after watching mostly fiction, where you're encouraged to theorise a lot and try to predict the shows next move. Vinland Saga is, bar the few inhuman feats, quite grounded in actual history. There's two ways this can go, you either know history and thus most of the surrounding plot or you just let yourself be immersed in the leisurely story. I do not fault them and am sure they will adjust eventually, as they have shown time and time again.
