This Fall 1980 tour is my absolute favorite era of Frank, and almost singlehandedly because of Vinnie. The power and technicality he adds is just unmatched!

I'm not a drummer and I don't know any drummer lingo, all I can say Vinnie is by far the #1 drummer I like to listen to ... I binge on anything Zappa he plays on. In my words, his playing breathes and there is always a surprise thrown in. Fuck, I do love it.

@@danender5555 right… thanks? Like I said… I had assumed (incorrectly) that Vinnie was out of the lineup on the dates Vai was in for. The personnel listing for Tinseltown Rebellion has both Cuccurullo and Logeman … I had assumed Vinnie played with Cuccurullo and then Vai came on board along with Logeman (when Vinnie “left” the tour).

Colaiuta was such a copy cat in his comeback, in late 80, soon to be dismissed again, now looking cool, using Terry Bozzios kit set up with double bass drum setup ,after declaring he never played with double bass ,and said he never tried bdfore joining Zappa, insinuating a slight disrespect for Terry Bozzio,up to his Zappa audition. I believe he used double bass before joining Zappa. If you do the audition of your life, you use a kit that you feel comfortable with. Why didn't he simply take away, for Frank's audition, one of Terrys bass drum? He's a liar. Great jazz drummer, out of this world phrasing, but vinnie fans, realize he's a bit overrated from bootlickers, putting overkill polyrhthmic sloppy Colai, at god level. Not a chance Vinnie fans.Vinnie was a better jazz drummer than Bozzio, but not the better jazzRock drummer fit for Frank, as Bozzio was, including metal style vocals and the highest sales and concert attendance worldwide . Also, Frank had to abandon the SG for the les Paul ,forced to use sustained pickups,to mold his air sculptures around vinnies sloppy polyrhythms, got a bit overplayed at times.Sloppy Colai was a bit too polyrhthmic for Frank's continued success pre 78 😀.

Yup, in many ways I like his playing from this period more than anything else he did. He got better as he got older, but he had such fire and snap here, as well as unbelievable creativity, which was maybe partly due to a bandleader who knew how to bring it out of him. Context is everything. If he never did Zappa's band, who knows what kind of a player he might have ended up being.
