I have to train WHO?
The River of Wealth and Freedom. Presented by GMC and the American Trucking Association Foundation.
Found on side 2 of the 1978 GMC Truck DiscoVision / Laserdisk. An interesting look at women in the workplace in the late 1970s, and a nice snapshot of what the highways looked like almost 40 years ago.
Sadly there is a bit of LaserRot, especially at the beginning of the film.

Even in the 70s truck drivers were longing for the “good old days”. If they had a time machine that would’ve transported them to today they would’ve went back to the 70s and never complained again!

Rocking that blue jumpsuit with bell bottoms !! Yeah that was the 70's. I got my first driving job on a ford tri axle dump truck that no one else would drive. The shift pattern was around the horn not diagonal . I drove cab overs, anteaters ,tankers,bulkers,reefers,mixers, on the road and off the road. 28 years was enough. I drove trucks because I couldn't stand to be in the same place all day every day with some one telling me I couldn't stop and lift my leg if I had to. I suspect that's a universal trait among truck drivers.Most of the years I drove was before gps trackers and cell phones I ENJOYED THE SOLITUDE I believe that's a common trait of drivers too. Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it. All our days are the good old days

I OTR and pull a 48-foot spread axle. What i like about these old videos is just how it really hasn't changed much. The truck stop lounges are almost a thing of the past but only because things with communication and the truck sleepers. We don't need to shuffle in sitting around bouncing calls back and forth. Now we just make a call or send a message from the truck. Of course with the larger sleepers we're more independent cooking on the truck is getting better and better. I have a fridge and freezer with a air fryer microwave. People complain about ELD but ELD isnt really a big issue the rules are basically the same as they were when this was filmed we got a coupe new additions but just like them we still maximize time and show the minimums.

@gregorybentley5707
@gregorybentley5707 Жыл бұрын
There's thousands of 20 year olds in the business that do the job everyday with worse regulations, horrible pay and an industry where the predatory truck companies and brokers treat them like a number and not a human. Hell in most industries those 20 year olds today are doing vastly more work under vastly more scrutiny for vastly less pay than anyone in the 70s could imagine. But yeah keep blaming it on the younger generation being "soft" and not the systems that have screwed and failed them. That's what's "sad" oh and people like you who exacerbate the lie that it's because the younger generation just isn't as strong. Hopefully you've gotten smarter in two years.

Enjoyed this walk through history....trucking history. Let me say that I’ve been on both sides of trucking. I do tend to defend truckers, but I tell all my friends that if more people would ride in a big truck for one week they would change their driving habits. There are some bad drivers out there on both sides. We all need to respect each other and be a little more considerate of each other. Most 4 wheelers don’t know what it takes to drive a big rig..safely! My dad started driving in the 30s, one brother in the 50s, other brother and me in the 70s...it’s in our blood. And most of my uncles have been truckers at some point.

Just about had a flash back to the first company I drove over-the-road for. I drove a White/GMC cabover with spring ride suspension and the best driver's seat I've ever had. You could hit a bump or series of bumps and the truck would shake and bounce but you wouldn't.
@PlatinumEagleStudios
@PlatinumEagleStudios 8 жыл бұрын
+DoNot Need The Bose Ride seat is the same concept except for the Bose Ride is all computer controlled and actually counteracts the road bumps by reading the road over 1,000 times a second then electronically measures out the exact amount of shock to apply to the seat to minimize the bumps. It is a VERY cool design. And truckers are saying that the Bose Ride is the best seat they have ever used because people with back problems can now drive trucks because the Bose Ride is pain free and is very easy on the back unlike some other air suspension seats.

I am only going to tell you this one time Donna. When your headed West on I-10 through El Paso, you need to stop at the Standard Oil truck stop on the south side of I-10. There will be a guy in the parking lot wearing a sombrero his name is big Bato, he will take you through a hole in the fence into Mexico there will be a guy there selling little plastic bags full of White Crosses Bennie’s they will be around $15.00 per hundred. I suggest you get 500 so you will have extra for all your drinking friends back home. Your next fuel stop will be the Triple T in Tuscon, AZ there you better stock up on RJS”s, Black Beauty’s. Drop your load in LA get a load of beef back to New York City, then do it all over again until your old and half dead.

I think this video was produced a little later than the 70's. This particular style of GMC Class 8 truck was produced from 1980 -1987. I also noticed that the driver trainer was wearing what appears to be a digital watch with an LCD display. And that big steering wheel? No power steering here. My Dad was an "old school" truck driver and they called it "Armstrong" steering.

This is corny as it can be, but it has a strong message that matters. I drive on the interstates quite a bit, I see people texting, not maintaining speed, not staying in their lanes, slamming on brakes when they miss an exit, etc. Just give every other vehicle space and let the other drivers know your intentions by way of turn signals. Put the damn phone down, keep an even speed, don't be aggressive, and look a half mile ahead of you so you can plan your next safe lane change or exit.

I learned to drive rigs on the job loading trailers around a warehouse in KS.in the 70s. I volunteered for delivery and got it. I honed my tractor trailer skill with 40 ft singles and doubles and loved it all. A 1977 cab over GMC was my favorite absolute. In 1979 Drivers had courtesy moves among themselves. Happy at 29 years old I found my gig and loved it till the company got sucked up by a global corporation and closed down.
