Thank you. I appreciated your keeping in the film feed error. That's what happened to me so I searched youtube and found your helpful video. I bought mine in the 1970s...It's been a while since I ran it. Good refresher! Thanks!

Matt! Was helping my Mom get organized and found my Grandpa Martin's Bell & Howard 8mm camera & projector. He bought it in 1967! There are videos of us kids because he marked the boxes plus there's two unused! A treasure for sure. He used to set up the projector or his slide projector & play stuff for us kids. All the equipment is there for both, I'd love to learn how to convert both the home movies and slides to DVD to make copies for Mom, myself, my siblings & his siblings. He was adopted in the Martin family. He had found all his biological siblings and Mother before he passed in 2012. They don't know my younger Dad. I want to gift them with memories that they will cherish. Then follow up with new recordings with the two blank reels, filming his family how they all are now. Convert it all to DVD to preserve for future generations. He even recorded my Great Grandfather's 90th Birthday. My Grandpa was a High School Teacher & an Accountant. He was a pillar in his community. That must be preserved. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!

My dad had this exact projector, and the camera and recorder that came with it. It was a sync-sound system, where audio was recorded onto a cassette tape recorder, which was connected with a proprietary cable to the camera and then the projector. The recorder recorded a beep to the other side's track of the tape, which sounded more like a chirp. The camera would film in silent for 5 seconds at 18 frames per second, then switch on the recorder (add the beep on the control track) and slow the camera down to 12 frames per second, then (after the film was processed and played back), the projector would do the same. (Unfortunately, using the recorder as a stand-alone audio cassette recorder resulted in recordings full of annoying chirping beeps all throughout the tapes.)

Just a heads-up: The Bell & Howell Dual-8 projectors had no sprockets. What you refer to as "sprockets" is just the pull-down claw. Unfortunately, the movement of the film through these machines (as well as around 98% of ALL other "Dual-8" projectors) was entirely dependent on the claw engaging the sprocket holes and the slow turning of the take-up reel hub. Contrary to popular belief, not only was this arrangement LESS gentle on the film than a dedicated 8mm or Super-8 projector with sprockets, but the film also ran less steadily through the gate and was more more subject to being scratched. The lever on these units that switches between the two formats merely adjusts the angle of the claw for the difference in Std.8 vs. Super-8 sprocket hole size (in addition to making the aperture plate smaller for Std.8, as you said). The rubber "tire" on top (which would often end-up disintegrating on the B&H projectors after about 10 years) , and where a top sprocket would normally be, was used to help load of the film only.

I’m confused if 98% of dual 8 projectors scratch the film, then what can you use to watch them?
@Onneff69 Жыл бұрын
@@chaddsteinberg3758 I didn't say that 98% of them scratch the film. But most Dual 8 projectors were a compromise from the beginning, regardless. In answer to your question, it was/is always better to use a dedicated Regular 8 or Super 8 projector for each film type if possible.
@smwca123 Жыл бұрын
In the 1960s there was a third format called Single 8, basically Fuji's answer to Super 8. Single 8 had the same image area and sprocket hole arrangement as Super 8 - but the Single 8 base was thinner, allowing a reel to hold up to 50% more Single 8 film than Super 8.
@Onneff69 Жыл бұрын
@@smwca123 Indeed there was! But Fuji's Single 8 film could be run in a Super 8 projector without any problems.
@smwca123 Жыл бұрын
@@Onneff69 You could just get more Single 8 film onto a reel, that was the only real difference.

I have a Bell and Howell 462A, which I believe is strictly Super 8, not capable of regular 8mm. It has a similar design, but it's a silent projector, and therefore, is not as elaborate. Also, I believe it's strictly autoload, whereas, this one looks like you can either do both, or thread it manually. They seem like well-built machines from the time. Awesome video, BTW!

Hello, Cherise T , go over to your B&H projector, & in there, is a lamp house cover now pull the cover away from the machine, you'll find the Defective bulb pull that out & install the fresh bulb with some cloth gloves. Make sure you have the rite bulb.

You didn't say much about the Sound Speed Control - if this is a Sound Projector , what does the Sound Speed Control do? Also, does this Projector have a Volume Control? Can you demonstrate a Super 8mm Sound film so we can Hear the Sound function of this Projector? Please Respond ; Thank You...
@mattscorner12325 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. This projector does not have a built in sound pickup. The sound would come from a cassette player that would plug in with a special cord near the elevation control. This cord would synchronize the cassette with the film. For this to work the speed control would be turned all the way up. Unfortunately I do not have the cassette player or cable to demonstrate this function, or any films that have a sound cassette. I believe this system was mostly used with home movies and not comercially produced films.

Myonley wards bunches up the film often too. I just pull the side plate off,manually thread each film, and snap it back on. Then fire it up to avoid bending up these rare films. I have an Argus 870 that needs the rubber wheel repair and hopefully after I apply the repair kit it works better that the monkey wards pos. I'm looking to upgrade to the bell & Howell sound projector anyway. I also have a b&h 16mm 2585 that I replaced the $100 worm gear in and also has its pita issues a much better product. Better reliability, great optical sound ect. Problem is finding any kind of cool films for the 16mm. All educational, commercial, crap or real old movies. No good titles out there unless your going to spend $400-$500 for a faded to red feature film like jaws, Halloween, close encounters of 3 rd kind. At least the super 8/8mm has many short movies you can find cheap but I much prefer the 16mm sound. Good video dude. Keeping the hobby alive. It's fun and frustrating.

Just some info ... Those 2 holes above the elevation control that look like "sound" connectors are actually where you would plug in a special cable ... You would also have a "cassette" tape recorder where the other end of the cable would plug into .... Those same connectors would be on the camera also and you would connect the cassette recorder to it ... You would shoot your film and the camera would control the cassette recorder ... The cassette recorder would record the audio while you shot the film .... At the end once you got the film developed you would connect that cassette recorder to the projector ... The projector would control the cassette recorder and the sound would play from this cassette recorder while the projector showed the movie film.

I just got one with tags still on it so it was never use but when I turn in the motor runs but when I switch the lamp on it shuts off with a weird smell.
@mattscorner12326 жыл бұрын
Russell Amirault That is interesting. When I think about why this may happen a few things come to mind. Perhaps the bulb is no good, and is shorting the rest of the machine out. Another thing that may cause this is a wire in the back may have come off the switch. When you turn the switch to lamp does the lamp come on at all?
@TheADHDUncle6 жыл бұрын
Yes the lamp comes then shuts of 2 seconds later. But if I just leave on motor in runs no problem
@mattscorner12326 жыл бұрын
+Russell Amirault Try running the machine with the switch in the lamp position with the lamp removed. Be careful when removing the lamp. Do not touch it with your bare hands as the halogen bulb may burn out if you do. I'd recommend pulling the bulb out carefully with a glove, or paper towel. Let me know if it shuts off with the lamp removed.

@mattscorner12325 жыл бұрын
There's a website called tveden lamp modules that sells alot of parts for these projectors. They also have a KZbin channel with very good how to videos regarding repair. You can also find belts on eBay.
@austinschmuck78145 жыл бұрын
i just tested it and thee film gets stuck inside and it doesn't go all the way through
@mattscorner12325 жыл бұрын
Could be that the belt slips when the shuttle tries to pull the film through, or that the feed tire isn't pushing the film into the guides.

whys it called filmosound? I DONT HEAR ANY SOUND?
@mattscorner12327 жыл бұрын
Edward Brady I believe it is called a film o sound because you can connect a special cassette tape player to it which will synchronize the film speed with the audio. However the audio would come from the tape player, not the projector.

So this tutorial was a bit frustrating. Half the time you were blocking the camera so I couldn’t see what you were actually doing. Also, the angle of the projector wasn’t helpful so I could see where the film is inserted for the auto load. Finally, toward the end, I could barely hear what you were saying over the sound of the projector. You need to be aware of these things if you’re going to do a tutorial. And you should watch your filming before you post as if you’re learning just as your audience. “Can I see what is happening? If I can’t, then my audience can’t either.” Thanks but you should Re-shoot the tutorial and be careful to ensure everything you are doing and saying can be seen and heard.
