The Chettinad Vintage Gallery in Pillaiyarpatti, Sivagangai district, has a motley collection of Cars, Scooters, Motorcycles, clocks, cameras, and more - all in working condition Automobile lovers can take a closer look at several restored models here, ranging from a striking red #Austin 10 Tourer 1933 #convertible with wooden spoke wheels, bought from a restorer in Jaipur. Next to it is parked 1951 #Moris Minor made in England. “It took me two years to restore this car,” Lakshmanan says, as he turns on its distinctive pop-up ‘semaphore’ indicator lights. During the lockdown, he has been working on the undercarriage of a 1956 baby blue #Plymouth, bought from a film producer in Chennai. There is also a small line-up of #scooters and auto-rickshaws manufactured in the 1950s.
Automobile Products of India (API) was founded in 1949 in Mumbai, by the British company Rootes Group and later bought over by M. A. Chidambaram of the MAC Group from Chennai. The company manufactured #Lambretta scooters, API Three Wheelers under license from Innocenti of Italy, and #Automobile ancillaries, notably Clutch and Braking systems. API's registered offices were earlier in Mumbai, later shifted to Chennai, in Tamil Nadu. The manufacturing facilities were located in Mumbai and Aurangabad in Maharashtra and in Ambattur, Chennai. The company has not been operational since 2002.
**Scrappage Policy update on vintage cars and bikes***
The upcoming Vehicle Scrappage policy has brought about jitters in the vintage and classic car and bike communities of India. These old jalopies are cherished and are prized possessions of their owners. Some of these cars and bikes have won accolades in international Concours events like Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Cartier Concours d'Elegance. Some of these vehicles also belonged to the erstwhile kings and royalty of India and contribute to India’s rich history as well. On the other hand, there are classic cars which are slightly newer and faster as well. These vehicles demand respect and #scrapping them would be nothing short of murdering Indian automobile history. So it comes as a sense of relief when Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari recently said that vintage cars will not be affected by the upcoming Vehicle Scrappage Policy. But this leaves a lot of questions to be answered.
