Vintage Daiwa j-13 spin fishing reel how to take apart and service

Dennis, I inherited my Dad's Daiwa. It was stiff and the bail didn't work. I went through the video, and now it's working fine. Thanks. I haven't wet a hook in thirty years. I'm retired now and it's time. Thanks again.

I put reel grease on with a screwdriver. I was glad to hear that's how you used to do it. I still do it that way.

Nothing wrong with the screwdriver approach. It does have it's limits in tight places

I have this same reel, probably for forty years. Have my and my brothers rods. His is a Dfs cavilier fiberglass rod. Cant make out the model number but it was always my favorite rod about 50 plus years old. Thanks for the video never have taken one apart.

Thank You for these videos! I have fixed 2 bail wires on other reels as you have described here & they work great now! I also have obtained 2 of these particular Daiwa J-13 reels & can't wait until we can fish with them. I originally looked this particular video up because that tension spring to control the override just popped right out when I took the side off. These reels were new to me so the first thing in my mind was, "Ah oh, where does that go?". Your video saved the day!

I have a J13 and a J40. The J40 had a broken AR switch on the back. The internal end was broken off. I actually found a new one and repaired it. I like both reels but that AR switch is a definite weakness. Glad you did this reel Dennis!

@@2ndChanceTackle yes, I’ve had my J13 for two years but only recently got a J40. I got lucky finding the exact part I needed. That little AR switch is a definite weakness in this series of reels. The J40 I got came with that part broken. The seller paid for the part to fix it. I’m probably going to buy a second part to keep in reserve. I’m happy that you did this video. It gave me a little more information I didn’t have. I ‘m excited as that 8600 comes this afternoon. If you can ever get an 8600 you should. There is not another Daiwa quite like it!

Hi Dennis, Enjoyed this one ! Had a similar recent experience with an Olympic Spark 150 and a errant shooting anti reverse spring/clip. It took a few attempts to get the case to "click" on the way out !! Good practice! Happy to say all went together well in the end. All the Best, Cons

That main gear, housing and spool look very similar to my Penn CS105

Yes they do. A lot of the Japanese design reels shared characteristics and the 105 Penn was made in Japan.

Is the handle reversible on the Daiwa J-13? I don't know if the cap on the side opposite the handle is just frozen or if it is not removable.

I was given an old Daiwa J-13 reel in excellent condition and I kindly ask you if it is ok for the spinning technique. I would use this reel with a spinning rod 2.40m, 10-40 gr. Yes - that reel should do fine with the rod you have. - There are plenty of videos on KZbin that will show you haw to cast with that combination. Thanks for asking - Dennis

the skirted spool has to be an improvement over the Mitchell 300 style spool

It has its advantages. The most significant one is that water from the line flows outside and off of the reel as opposed too collecting in the bowl of the rotor and draining into the reel - Thanks - Dennis

I jave not seen any issues there. As always, read the directions and cautions. I have seen some cleaners mar or dull the finish on metal plating, but not the Flitz product - Dennis
