Nice work on that one! I’ve restored a couple of these old pen reels and put them back in use. I caught a small shark on a Long Beach 65 this weekend. Great job redoing the nickel plating, I didn’t know it was something that could be done like that.

The only thing that concerns me are the threads on that screw which holds the new handle. Without a bushing of some kind it will eventually start wearing out the wood from the inside. It looks AWESOME!

It’s called wait it’s an easy one to remember. It’s called the handle nut. The other screw is called the handle lock screw

I have a similar reel that I am restoring. Does the rust remover help with removing the original chrome or only the rust? What voltage are you using for the plating?

Great video. Im trying to restore one of my penn reels, although ive never done restoration aside from corrosion removal so i had some questions. Would most of the work be doable without power tools? I currently only have a drill and dremel. do you need to sand the handle before plating and was there a reason for the star drag to be copper plated or was that just a personal choice? Sorry for all the questions

Hello Mike, thanks... there ´s always a way to go around with no power tools it may be more difiicult but posible of course, but a drill and dremel are enough tools for this project. Every piece you will plate will need previous plating to be removed so sanding is a must, Star drag copper plated is only to customize my unit but not a necesity. Good luck with your restoration !

Great job on the restoration. Other "collectors" don't even lubricate anything! FYI, these old Penns are still being fished to this day. I personally have a collection of Jigmasters, Squidders, Surfmasters, Senators, you name it. Make sure to grease the gears, spool "key" where the pinion gear engages, the yoke, jack, eccentric and oil the bushings (or grease if you're not casting). Just the handle part I didn't care for, as the old bakelite handles for the 85 are getting harder and harder to find and the original would have been fine. Also the bushings did not need to be nickel plated, as you nickel plated everything inside, whereas the inside is supposed to be brass (that's the whole point of the bushing). New HT-100 drags could have been added instead of leather washers too for a much better drag performance.

i hate when people dont give proper maintenance to there saltwater reels. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU USE A REEL IN SALTWATER AND DONT CLEAN IT PEOPLE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! but in all seriousness, take care of your gear. reels are expensive. freshwater reels don't really need anymaintenance though.
