Vintage Free Flight Graupner Kleiner UHU 'Getaway' on slope Nanos UPDATE! RESCUED!

The replica od small UHU by SkiraB had a dream to fly high in the sky. And on 26.12.2019 he took the chance to break free on nice evening air on slope Nanos - Slovenia. The flight took 3,30min .. but he came back. Rescue crew is on the way....
Update .... the little guy is back at home :)

Wonderful! These little birds sometimes just broke free and away they were. As a schoolboy I was in a class about model planes and we took part in the UHU competition. My first one simply flew away much like yours almost did. My teacher then bought me a new one and with that I won a great prize: My very first Graupner 4 channels radio trasmitter set. Great memories. And today I will get a 35 years old brand new, unbuilt kit of the Jedelsky UHU which flew phenomenal.

The first Graupner model I built was a "Der kleine UHU", back in 1975 🤗 I recall the stabilizer was mounted with a rubber band and an optional fuse to make it descend. Great times! 🤩😪

De souvenirs il y avait aussi possibilité de monter une minuterie mécanique. Ça marchait aussi très bien avec un système de mèche lente (et c'était bien moins cher😉). Lorsque le temps était écoulé, le stabilisateur passait à 45° et le planeur partait en descente parachutale.

I built one some time in the 70s. It was the best free flight glider I had ever had. When throwing it and it encountered a gust, there was no nose-up tendancy, just a perfect flat gain in altitude. The slight curvature of the otherwise flat elevator provided the perfect amount of lift when air velocity increased.

Man i enjoyed that, the joys of free flight, it is something special that you miss with RC. It is like riding a small motorcycle again, you forget the simple pleasures.

Nice flight and great memories for me. I built a few in the late sixties I was 11-12 years old, No slopes nearby so lots of running to tow it up.

Great video. great flight.Glad that th model returned. I started also with a "little UHU". Even though I had that fuse on the elevator (1 cm meant 1 minute burn until descend), I had my plane to fish out of a river, rescue it from a garden far away ... great fun, great memories.

Free flight is much more fun than boring R/C. I have a 10 meter telescopic flagpole with a powerul magnet on the end which picks up the steel nose weight when landing in a tree.

In the early 80's I had the successor of this one (basically the same but with ABS fuselage). It had a mechanical timer to tilt the elevator upwards after some minutes to force it to land. But once the release mechanism was blocked and released only partially ... then it circled upwards in the thermals over our small city until it was completely out of sight. Luckily we found some guys who told us that it had landed in a large tree in a garden on a hill at the other side of the town.

Da es bei uns in der Nähe keine Hänge gab haben wir den Kleinen UHU nach einigen Versuchen mit der Zeitschaltuhr zur Auslösung der Thermikbremse eingesetzt. Trotzdem ist so mancher Flieger ebenfalls in den Bäumen gelandet.

deswegen gab es bei Graupner Freiflugmodellen die sogenannte "Thermikbremse" d.h., einen Glimmdocht am Höhenruder der den Halteummi am Ende der Ruders nach Abbrennen durchklimmt sodaß das Ruder hochklappt.
