Hi Tee-Jay, you mentioned in a comment in another video that the 8006 has 45 amps of power. How is that measured? Also, does the PM8005 also have 45 amps of power? Thank you!

@pauljames1586 65 Amps of insatanaous power ! The amp has a 625va toridal transformer and hdams hyper dynamic amp modules Its in The feedback that marant pm8006 uses that allows this and all above big power supply ' I read it on their spec sheet online it's a powerful little amp very very good bass idk about 8005 but 8006 drove my Polk lsim 703 that drops down to 3.1 ohms with ease ! Loved that amp wasn't the most refined the new Marantz 50 2 ch stereo intg is suppose to be an updated 8006

Brought back great memories! Gorgeous in appearance and sound. I wanted a 2270, but in 1975 had to "settle" for purchasing the next best unit, a 2275. Marantz was hitting full stride in the early to mid-1970's. Thank you so much.

A very timely and excellent review Tee-Jay. I've auditioned the Marantz 8006 and was comparing it to my vintage Kenwood 7600 ( a beast as well) perhaps not in the same league as the Marantz but directionally similar. An understated 80 watts per channel that'll kick like a mule. Your description of the sounds were terrific. The vintage receiver had all of that lovely warmth albeit with the "thick" midrange. As I'm now vintage myself, I'm preferring the leaner more transparent mids with the airy sparkle top end detail of the new Marantz- maybe because my hearing has also changed. And your description of the soundstage was music to my ears. Thank you for all of your reviews, but know that this one really hit the mark for me in my decision making process. Keep up the great work!

I own a vintage 2245 from 72, and this particular production run always had more than the rated RMS. My 2245 tested at 67 wpc during its last service. And paired with my JBL-L166 Horizons from ‘77, will easily knock pictures off the wall. But still have that warm sound with crystal clear clarity. IMO, the best receivers ever made.

For a young man, you appreciate 1970s Stereo equipment as I do; and you understand why they sound so good. I'm 67 and in 1970 I was a freshman in high school. My 2245 was my 3rd amp, actually was my first separate receiver. The 2245 had no problem running 4 Large Advents. Just about everybody was into quality & stereos & new vinyl releases. I preferred the sound of Marantz over B&O, McIntosh, & Yamaha equipment. I had my first job at age 14 and my first purchase was a pair of Advents. However, they also sold the idea of Double Advents. 4 full sized speakers wired in parallel. You turned the bottom pair upside down and the ones on top correctly. This would give you a wide dispersal of the treble which made it very natural sounding. Henry Kloss first worked at A&R, then KLH (he's the K), after Advent , he founded (American) Cambridge. The only problem with Advents was that HiFi in the 60's, in the recording process they deemphasized the area above treble at the time. You would hear all of the limitations of HiFi it they had full treble. I added two Radio Shack super tweeters which improved the sound a lot, but not near as much as JBL concert tweeters. Using the electronics in the R.S. I was able to hook the blue triangle tweeters and this combo sounds incredible. I discovered them early on when you could buy them for around $300 a piece, today they are $500 to $700; but worth every penny. I had a 1,000 watt Yamaha amp that could run at 2 OHMs, but adding the tweeters I probably drove them down to 1 OHM. So, after blowing up that beautiful amp, I replaced it with 2 Yamaha 750 watt amps and a Yamaha pre amp. A Technics 1200 record player, an AKAI direct drive cassette player, 2 30 year old Pioneer cd players, two Pioneer DJ CD players (the older ones have better lasers and see thru scratches much better than current models, and a CD Recorder. This way I can make mix CDs. I haven't had a problem since. So, I have about $4,000 in a setup that sounds like a $10,000 stereo. It's a monster and rarely gets too warm. Back to Marantz, 5 years ago,I found a refurbished 2270 or 90 and a Marantz 90 watt per channel DC Receiver which is indestructible, with another set of Double Advents for the garage. Advents have a sound you never get tired of. I can open the garage door and I can bother my neighbors 200 feet away without melting everything down. Thanks for this review. If you are on FB, PM me at Steven Pettinga, Indianapolis. I'd share a couple photos that way. Thanks again, Steven

You are right, the PM8006 is an imaging monster. I had a hard time replacing that amp because even if I liked the tonality of another amp (like the 6000a), they would just sound 2D in comparison to the 3D 8006. I finally settled on a Cambridge Audio Azur 851a, which had the imaging capabilities of the 8006, but did not have the V curve presentation or recessed midrange of the 8006. Great amps though, all of them. Depends on your speakers for synergy.

Tee-Jay, wonderful comparison! The difference strikingly reflects the change of priorities, moving away from focus on the midrange (vintage) to focus on the frequency extremes (modern). While many would call the modern approach "improved", and certainly, there are improvements. Yet, there is substantial step-back in midrange quality and general ability to transfer emotions and provide long term satisfaction. No easy choices! ;) Cheers, Janos 🐱👤

Hallo from Germany again! 😀You are an excellent observer. I happen to have the same two Amps. After i saw your review of the PM8006 i thought, well, this guy seem to have the same ears like me. Now that you have compared both Amps, i must say you nailed it! 👍 With the 2270 i experienced for the first time what dynamics is all about. A incredibly emotional performance. Two years ago i tried the PM8006 and realized it is in fact a very detailed and very fast Amp. BUT no dynamics with these speakers, less bass and less warmth. After 8 years of entry level Duevels, i decided to buy the bigger Duevel Venus with an 8 inch bass and a 1,34 inch mid/high driver. Dynamics were back. Not the same as with the 2270 but still very good with all advantages of being faster and more detailed, with the decay of instruments being a special highlight. After comparing both for a long time with a lot of different music, i would summarize the 2270 always sounds dynamic and the PM8006 sounds dynamic when the recording is. In other words: For me the newer Marantz seems to be the more honest Amp. Could be because of the wear and tear of the 2270 (even i serviced it multiple times). But this is what i observed. Greetings from "decaying" Germany! 🥳

And when was the amp serviced and has their been any Kind of recapping done also are all the knobs/controls static free Ask if you can test the amp out before you buy when you do this make sure you turn all the knobs up and down just to make sure one speaker isn't cutting in/out and no static Also ask if all the display lights all work properly . Remb with vintage gear theirs no 'WARRANTY' ! Price is about right for a well maintained Marantz thats been serviced threw the years and Remb the capacitors are getting very old in these units and will need to be replaced ! if you want it to sound more detailed change your rca cable, for something like 47 ohms 19pF/1000ft. the lower the ohms the more detail can be achieved. and use non metal RCA plugs and ideally sockets, they can be in different ohms as well, you want 50 ohms not 75 for analogue, what probably modern equipment seems to have 75 ohms. 75 or higher only for digital signal.

Electronics in 8006 are to a much more precise spec. The phono stage is superb and has a much better signal to noise ratio. It is articulate rather than mellow and wallowing. I did an AB test of the 8006 v the band new Rega Elicit 5 which is a fantastic new bare bones audiophile amp and the Marantz held its own very well indeed. We played a range of material from 1960s classical vinyl on a Linn LP 12 £4K to top quality CDs and the 8006 was excellent with very high quality speakers. It weighs a ton, is built to last, still made in Japan with top quality components. Given you also get that subtle mid range tone control for vocals and things like violins it’s a bargain, especially since the replacement model is less pure analogue. Get one on exit pricing ASAP would be my recommendation.

Interesting comparison with the Rega Elicit 5 which I am considering buying -- I've still got a thing about Marantz. and the 8006 ticks a lot of boxes for a lot less money then the Rega .. I'm using Lintons with my current LEAK Stereo 130 which is also a superb amp -- but I'm itchy for an upgrade .. Rega is realty superb but at a price - Greetings from Ireland

I had an opportunity to pick up a 2240 old school Marantz receiver fully restored last year and I compared it to my 6005 that I've been using for a while. And you know to be honest with you either than things like the newer amp has a bit more clarity and definitely kind of has more of a in the room sort of vibe with the performers, it actually isn't totally dissimilar. you know it's almost like they sort of took and bottled what the sound of the old school receivers were and made a new amp with that but just added a bit more clarity and a bit better presence. of course there were some differences beyond that but you know like I said it was remarkably similar and I know from now on whenever somebody says to me "oh man I wish new amps sounded like the old school ones" well I'm just going to tell them about Marantz. also believe it or not denon is very much like that as well although I haven't really heard any of their older stuff but I've got a PMA 600 that I picked up refurbished for really good money and it kind of has an old school sound as well.

is not easy to obtain the same 70's sound today, just because there aren´t the same components available, of course in some way, newer, selected components, are far better, but also more faster. I think is way more simple to play with digital amplifiers hacking the signal until the desired sonority is achieved. By the way, we have some nice experiments today, like the new Musical Fidelity A1, but I didn't heard it in person, it would be nice, to try the old and the new with a vintage pair of speakers to hear the differences.

Just had my Sansui Au 717 master restored and resto modded unreal !! Destroys all my new age Amps under $4500 U.S. . But if built today on this level would easily be an #8k amp ' thr majic of many vintage Amps was the Metal T03a output transitors and complete 'fully descrete circuit' which means no op-amps no i.c. nor no compasitors in the signal path ' "Pure' audio signal -

I agree with you ' build quality is a little bit better 100 percent just like Pioneer receivers 50 series vs 80 series like 1050 vs 1080 - 1050 is built a little better

I truly believe that if Marantz were to bring back the 22 series and built to the exact way the originals were, I think they would sell. Start at the 2230 and going up the list all the way up to the 2600 and build them identical to the originals in every way and with the same quality and they would have systems like nothing made today

you know I have to say that a lot of this is through rose colored glasses. if you were to have a time machine and go back and listen to a brand new 2270 out of the box they don't necessarily sound like a lot of people remember. I only bring this up because I've got a 2240 and it's been fully restored and I made a conscious choice to specify the precise capacitor values to the guy who rebuilt it. you see a lot of times when these things get rebuilt and get recapped they will take and they will put different higher capacitance capacitors in it so as to increase bass response and things like that unfortunately it does change the sound. now I know auditory memory isn't exactly what it supposed to be but I had several old timers listen to this thing from time to time and all of them said that that was exactly how they remember them sounding. now while it did have a bit of a lush mid-range it wasn't quite as warm as the unrestored variant. And I say that because I think that's what people especially younger people are remembering or thinking about when they listen to one of these. basically they're listening to one that's been unrestored where the capacitors and resistors and things completely out of spec which just makes for this warm foggy sound. but again fully restored properly that clarity jumps up and a bit of that warmth goes away and in my opinion you're left with something that very much sounds like a modern Marantz. I've got a p.m. 6005 and my 2240 versus it other than a touch better clarity and sounds staging on the newer amp they sound remarkably similar I mean remarkably similar.

@@Audiorevue I worked previously in an Hi-Fi shop, based on 100’s of demos of “blind” A-B or A-B-C tests with any brand identical receiver/amp against itself, virtually no one could tell they were listening to same device. We’d get usual “audiophile” feedback that A,B or C had better depth, warmth, clarity, etc etc….literally 2-3 people ever had “golden ears” to tell the difference on their own before being told. Just sharing that hearing + the mind, not very reliable.
