Vintage Monkey Wrench Restoration (Plus: Making a thread tap)

I found this old monkey wrench in my parent's barn. I figured it would be a quick and simple restoration. I was wrong. I ended up making a thread tap for an oddball thread on the screw, which was something new for me.

@@JeremyMakesThings I seem to recall Mr. Pete doing a video on a set screw in the quill nose that can cause tool holders to get stuck. It didn't look like a hard fix.

That's an acme thread. It's designed for travel and not tightening. The crest is supposed to be flat as to avoid wear as it would if it were a regular thread. Same thing as a ball screw on a machine like your lathe or mill.

There are several false origins for the term “monkey wrench,” some with racist connotations (if you’re referring to the boxer Jack Johnson, the term pre-dates him by about 100 years)- but the reality is no one knows for sure when, where, or why the term came into being.
