It is a wonderful pen. As per the images, I can tell you that that pen is from 1985. It has threaded mechanism with Brass threads which was first introduced in 1985 by MB. The nib is 14C which was used from 1972 up to 1985. it has a two section barrel which was introduced in 1983 and a split ebonite. It is a great pen for any collection. The Rolls Royce of pens. Congratulations!

You are correct. This is not a 1970's pen as shown, but still a fantastic pen with nice upgrades vs the 1970's versions. The feed is still ebonite (improved) and most importantly the brass components in the piston mechanism.

I visited Germany for the first time in 2019 and my on big purchase was a Montblanc 149 in platinum that I bought at KaDeWe in Berlin. Only since then I’ve had some work struggles and haven’t used it yet, wanting to wait for a more appropriate moment, maybe at work in my office, rather than just scratching a few notes on a piece of rag paper in my kitchen at home. But I’ve taken it out a handful of times just to admire it. While I do think that Montblanc has a little too high of a markup just for their name, at the same time I think there is a long established historical reason for that reputation, and I think of them as the premier maker of fine pens.

Tell me why I have exclusively used the vintage MB Black ink from W. Germany for 30+ years in my 80s 149? I’ve stockpiled it! To this day, the ink’s lubrication and smoothness is beyond compare in ALL my pens. Why?

i think it was only the 60s that had plastic although i may be wrong, my 146 from the 80s has brass threads

The older ones are far better. The resin is thicker and the nibs were ground perfectly.

Does 70’s Montblanc 149 nibs have any flex? Thinking about buying one.

They do, but I would not flex them because they are hard to replace. They are very nice. My favorite is fine-size nibs from the era. I do think Iroshizuko Take sumi is not a good ink for Montblanc pens. I would stick to one of MB inks. You will realize that when you try to clean it. MB inks take maybe 5 or 6 pumps....pilot inks take 20+....very irritating.
