Hey Gusto, it's about time I finally sit down and watch this gem of a video - a great collab with your buddy, SafetyOptional and gotta say - the condition of this thing was amazing. ...The way you guys open the outer pouch..hahah! Loved this video - it was an amazingly well stored vintage MRE. I am jealous of the chocolate brownie!! The cheese was a phenomenal find - that was one of the most well preserved brown baggers I've ever seen - a real step back in time. Awesome work man. I look forward to the next time you're back in action with another review.

Hmm, MRE collaboration videos? I like that idea, I'm surprised there aren't more collaborative efforts on videos with regards to MRE's. I would actually like to see an active soldier review one of these meals and how they actually eat these in the field because I see comments from former soldiers all the time who always say they never ate meals like the MRE reviews prepare them.

I think this is my 4th time watching this video. That fudge bar is seriously the best looking one I've ever seen. Shawker71 told me that he used to use the soup and gravy base to reconstitute the patty. He also told me that the cheese always liked like that kinda brown/grey and grainy.

I can kick myself for opening the ones (mid 80's MRE's) that I had for my California earthquake closet and throwing away the entrees after we relocated to New Hampshire in 2005. I did open a vacuum sealed sugar cookie with M&M's from one of them and it tasted like the day it was packaged.

bringing back some memories. back in the day we'd take the soup base and add it to the "track pad" then add water to it, fold the bag, put it in the bean box, and set it out in the sun for a while, then it would be soft enough to chew, the beans always had that odd tang even when new, the cheese generally had that gym sock aroma but tasted decent , the fudge bar was the bomb, guys would pay to get more of them, the catsup powder was in the "A" packet most guys would never use it, but I liked it.

It's been mentioned before on numerous other videos like this but the ingredients were better in the brown bag MREs than today's. Beef/pork patties today have the maximum amount of soy allowed for them to be considered "meat". I don't think there's one yet of any of the patty MREs where I didn't bite down on what I imagine is a piece of bone. It tells me that it's likely the trimmings between the bones or the quality control isn't concerned about an occasional bone getting in the grinder. I had an MRE in the guard that was only 3-4 years old and the cheese had already separated. I wish the army would spend more effort in wholesome food and more well rounded meals. A meat main with the quality of ones like this here. Some kind of vegetable and fruit. Imagine meatloaf with green beans and bacon and onions as a side. Some kind of fruit bar or dried fruit and or nut mix. I'm tired of cheese and crackers or PB and crackers/snack bread. You can have 6 different MREs and they all come with cheese/PB and crackers/snack bread. It's just plain lazy. I don't care about the varieties of cheese like jalepeno/bacon/plain. It's still cheese. I've heard it said that the food scientists who develop MREs are having trouble with picky soldiers who grew up on nothing pizza bites, ramen, cereal and monsters. Guess what if that soldier is in the field and you hand an MRE. He'll learn real quick vegetable and fruit are good for you. He'll feel better too. Even coming from and MRE.

Nice mess kit. Looks like an official Boy Scout of America kit frying pan. When I was in scouts, the cup that was inside was metal. Man did I burn my mouth when drinking hot chocolate from it. Later a plastic cup replaced the metal one. I use to put pop tarts in the skillet and put the plate or bowl on top. Kind of an oven. I would the heat the pop tart over the fire. Memories.
