any tips for learning/ improving fingerstyle guitar? Been playing fingerstyle since I was 15, now 25 with three broken fingers and looking to come back with a bang once I'm healed :)

Oooft ! I feel for you ! I broke my left wrist, nearly 4yrs ago. The broken bone heals in around 6 weeks, with a cast on BUT the muscles get damaged from the injury too - and they take much longer to heal. For months I couldn't grip/squeeze my fingers - and thus fret the strings. I was surprised though that I was at least able to hold a slide - and my vibrato was still there (I was worried and have to learn that all over again !). Fingerstyle can sound more complicated than it has to be. eg. hold down a chord, and instead of a strum of all the strings in one go, you are picking individual notes from that chord. Playing each note separate makes it sound like you are doing something much more fancy. AND then if you add in extra notes OR change notes - by hammering on, or pull-off notes (or both in fast on-off-on-off), you are actually not doing all that much extra BUT it sounds much fancier. eg. the simple E chord - pick each note our in the chord - BUT pick the 3rd string 1st fret on the 1st beat of every bar BUT hammer on the note to add that pre beat extra note. (ie. pluck the 3rd string open THEN immediately hammer on the 1st fret - which gives TWO notes for ONE string pluck). Sounds fancier but you are only really playing the E chord. I first learned to do that when changing from another chord (like A), back to E - and couldn't manage to get ALL three fingers fretted together, in time. I could get the 4th & 5th string fretted in time. I found if I pluck the 3rd string Open first, then hammered on to the 1st string, it sounded OK. Well, in fact it sounded better than hitting the full E chord all together !
