A Box Fan comparison between a classic National Pana Cycle fan that's made in Japan Vs a cheap new KMart ANKO fan that's made in China. Both these Box Fans have moving louvers, are 30cm / 12 inch is size and both have 3 speeds. But as I start to investigate the designs of these fans I uncover a few interesting facts about power output and fan blade design.
I did look at a lot of info about the Vintage Pana Cycle fan but it was difficult to pinpoint a exact era for the fan. To me it's shouting in style as something from the 70's. I did see similar Pana Cycle fans with timers said to be early 80's but info on the one I found is difficult to find.
As a total distraction I do get into removing the yellowing plastic that happens of old plastic electrical goods and toys. Anyway I just hope the electric fan collectors and fanboys who love fans appreciate a dedicated video looking into the deep bunny hole of domestic fans. These fans are very common to see thrown out as curbside rubbish and all too often it's the cheap n nasty made in China fans that are thrown out within a few years of purchase.

This is because of “planned obsolescence” it’s a practice most companies do nowadays. They do it for, you guessed it. To make more money off people by making cheaper products that don’t last long and having them constantly buy more from them. Instead of spending less money and using what they have or reusing stuff instead of buying more new products from the companies. Lots of companies including absolute titan companies have their fingers in the pie that is planned obsolescence. Absolutely wasteful and unethical practice that is a huge downgrade that only serves for companies to make money.

@@leokimvideo fair point but even then buying less “junk” quality items means slightly less money for those companies who rely on people to buy more.

Thanks for putting in all the effort you do for these videos even with all the trouble youtube continues to put you through. Living in HK means I see a constant stream of this rubbish being sold for dirt cheap, but we basically assume that it is a gamble whenever you buy something. So now when we buy something we have to decide if we are ok with throwing away the money in the chance that whatever you buy might be complete trash. I totally agree we need to get back to manufacturing products that not only work properly but also last. Moreover, I hope people will wake up and stop allowing companies to get away with the practices they follow now. As always, thanks for the awesome content, enjoy watching no matter the topic. RIP Teddy

I would love to travel to China and see what they throw out as curbside rubbish. I have seen what happens in Vietnam and it all gets recycled. If anything of any value is on the side of the road it's picked up in an instant. Another thing that goes on in Vietnam is there is a lot of repairing of goods that are thrown out. Yet in Australia the idea of repairing anything now is a totally foreign idea. Just look how Apple company now operate. It's all becoming all unrepairable and replacement is the option to move forward.
@roboticrainbow
@roboticrainbow Жыл бұрын
@leokimvideo indeed, it is true that things gey picked up and recycled right away over here, but that is also threatened with new policies and attempts to make us seem more "civilized." In the coming April they will roll out a city-wide change in rubbish collection and now everyone will have to pay a fee for disposing of anything this will be done in the form of expensive trash bags that will be mandatory once the new system rolls out. The jacked up price is supposed to go to the government and act as a deterrent to people who would normally trash things without thinking. Unfortunately, the rich aren't going to care about a few extra dollars and it is feared that it will greatly affect the elderly who rely on collecting recycled goods and lost treasures when sorting through the piles of rubbish left on the streets and next to dumpsters. I myself have collected 3 Dyson stick vacs and two fans from the more well-off buildings in my area. I'm just glad there will be one last holiday season of normal rubbish piles for me to check out before this new law comes into effect in April.

That’s a really good video talking about the electric fans. I’m also surprised that the “made in Japan” Fan that is sunfaded or water effected still works. Just like some toy brands having quality control issues. It’s a bummer that the quality control issues also apply to things like electric fans and maybe even furniture and TVs. Looking at that box fan really brings me back to the good old days as I remember having one of those fans for the summer time as a extra addition to help keep us cool.

I found a Dyson fan on a rubbish pile. It had obviously fallen over at some point and cracked the housing slightly, which had been taped up. It works fine, but it's not a good product, especially for the money. At a low speed setting it makes a very slight breeze and is nice and quiet. If you turn it up, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner but still blows less air than a $12 Bunnings ran on its lowest setting. The Bunnings fan is not a high quality item, but I've had it for many years and it still does its job perfectly. Some friends had the newer fancy Dyson tower fan, mainly because of the apparent ease of cleaning compared to a box fan. They ended up getting a $12 Bunnings pedestal fan which blows more air and is quieter. It is slightly harder to clean though.

You can use hyrdogen peroxide to restore yellow plastic if you don't want to use acetone. You'd have to soak the plastic in hydrogen peroxide in a container and let it out in the sun for a few hours. I used that trick (Retrobright) to restore some old videogame controllers.

@@leokimvideo , Explosions & Fire made a video about getting concentrated hydrogen peroxide. He lives not too far away from you, but the restriction may be local. I'd say a gentle polishing wheel/pad is still the best option. all of the options involve removing the top layer of plastic and by doing that mechanically via a polishing pad or wheel, you have the most control and are less likely to damage anything.

if you want to know roughly when something is made, have a look at the microchips on the control boards. 99% of them will have a 4 digit date code in the format YYWW (year/week). That will at least give you an idea of when the product was made within reason.

I have had to deal with this too many times. It will happen when someone I know (usually my mother because she likes throwing everything away) will replace a long standing, faultless product with a new, shiny (often Chinese) "equivalent", but only weeks or if lucky, months later, it fails, and they use that as an excuse to buy another one, making life difficult for everyone else, while still feeling that they made the right decision. I wish consumers would smarten up and refuse to be played the way most are right now. The only way we get quality is if there is demand for it! I hope your video get more views than stupid-tube wants, Leo. They are perfectly happy with planned obsolescence as long as their advertisers get people to see their rubbish.

@@leokimvideo, I tried once... Now there is almost none of the good stuff left! At least I was able to save the old Vitamix Super 3600 (a stainless steel jug blender with a monster motor), the old FoodSaver vacuum pump, a 2005 Lexus, and my old SEARS Craftsman professional tools! My mum did sell the old vacuum cleaners (at least she replaced them with Dysons) and practically gave the old Mercedes 300TD station wagon to a good man who is restoring it and understands its value. She now only leases cars now too as the last car see bought (a ~2016 mercedes) lasted about 3 years tops! In short, THEY DONT MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO! They dont even look half as good either!

About the noice is because the anko fan pitch is trash and is five bladed and the plastic on the anko blades is thin so the blades warped while spinning. While the national has 3 rugged blades and the fan does not warp since it has good plastic Sure im a fan boy. Some like the fans that looks old are usually good or decent and you can give em deep clean and oiling and we can teach you how to fix em and later sell them to make money. Do not save the dyson bc its trash.

the National's fan blades are a great design, let me say. Judging by their geometry, the take a lot of inspiration from ship screws, with the very bulbous, rounded leading edge, to the elongated trailing edges, all of which reduce loud vortices. The Chinese cheapy though, is a lazy, minimum effort design which is why its louder, and probably means it has to spin faster to make the same thrust. its like a $2 plane propellor compared with a modern Rolls-Royce jet engine. There are clear signs of care, motivation, and effort in National's Pana Cycle, but all I see from the ANCO is 5 minutes worth of computer design, trying to finish the whole fan design before the lunch break. Speaks volumes, doesn't it?
@1471SirFrederickBanbury
@1471SirFrederickBanbury Жыл бұрын
I do wonder about it seemingly spinning in reverse to the design. The National looks like its meant to spin the other way. I wonder if that's intentional or not. I wonder if any fan fanatics are willing to have a comparison between this blade set-up and having the whole thing reversed. I have almost never seen the set-up the National has. I would imagine it would push far more air if the leading edge was the rounded side like all other propellers though...
