Years ago, My Grandparents owned a motel in Il, anyway this was the early 50,s and he had those radios in every room, a quarter got you 15 mins of listening pleasure, when TV became popular about 1958 , they all got pitched into the back of the pick up and off to the trash they went
@Captionmarvelous6 жыл бұрын
I remember back in 58 our local TV shop got an order for about 300 TV's for a new motel in Danville, pa. Wasn't too much longer after that sale he purchased an airplane so he could fly around playing ham radio in the sky. He was the only appliance store for miles around that offered good deals and good service so I am sure that also went into the airplane purchase. Things were different in those days, If you were in a business in those days you would have enjoyed a great profit margin and would have had a nice financial lifestyle. A note for anyone in here that would like to get a ham license, you no longer need to learn the morse code and if your somewhat technical,a little on line study might introduce you to a nice and useful hobby. Just about anything new in a transceiver can be done from your home computer if you have a half decent computer.......Or you could play with stuff like me that goes back to 1943. It's all fun! de W2PFY

I don't know why, but they ALWAYS remove the damn coin mechanism. THat's the part that makes it cool. I have a "radiomatic" coin operated radio that happened to still have its mech (and two more of other makes without it). It is kind of crappy in how the coin mechanism worked- it uses a synchronous timing motor and a leaf switch so when the time runs out, the radio doesn't outright quit, it will arc a bit across the contacts and cause it to sound all scratchy. I replaced the leaf switch with a microswitch so it turns on/off without the arcing. When you put a coin into the slot you had to press the button on top to make it take it. If the coin's too small it won't advance the time disc and will just go into the coin box. The time disc has a slip clutch so pressing the button forces the disc around a set amount, so you could put more than 1 quarter in at a time.
