I can tell that Benu's staff is really passionate based on what you guys say about the batches and things they experiment with when they get back to you about exclusive ideas. Part of the enjoyment and love for the pens you have is learning about the passionate people that have made the object you're holding.

The Janéa interview was great. She is such a positive person. She really hit a note with me when she mentioned 'thought dumping'. I've been doing the same thing basically since I started with fountain pens but I've always referred to it as 'brain dumping'. It's a great technique to just give you an excuse to write with your fountain pens.

Regarding stickers: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We need an ‘It Depends’ sticker!! I have a sentimental pen and ink that remind me of my kids. I got into this hobby shortly after my youngest turned 2 and I finally felt like I could start being a real human again. My daughter’s name is Marigold, so of course I had to purchase a bottle of the Birmingham Pen Co ink by the same name. It is fun and vibrant, just like she is. I also have a cow-print Platinum Meteor in honor of my then-2-year old son, who was obsessed with cows! It’s nothing fancy, but it makes me smile every time I see it.

Sailor fude de mannen 55 degrees hands down the best for drawing for me. I cannot live without this pen. I have multiples inked up with platinum carbon ink or other permanent inks and many have stayed wet even after 6+ months of not using.

Hong Dian has a Black Forest with a Fude nib. I've been debating between that and the Sailor 55 degree and can't make up my mind.
@nerdartastic5 ай бұрын
Oh, interesting. I don't have that pen, but from what I'm reading, it looks like a "regular" pen size. Sailor fude de mannen is much lighter in weight and it's longer. The cap doesnt post on the back of the pen securely. And there is no clip. So I guess it depends on whether you prefer the more standard type of fountain to draw with. I learned that lightness (about 18 g or less) is a must for me. Since I'm using the pen at various angles and rotations. I want to be able to maneuver it easily. Also I found I like the Sailor fude longer length un posted. It somehow adds a nice balance when drawing even though when writing it could potentially feel like a wand. Sailor fude de mannen doesn't fit in all pencil cases due to its longer length.
@DesireeStamat5 ай бұрын
@@nerdartastic thanks for these notes. They are helpful. Lightness IS important. I had not thought about that. As is the ability to fit into an art kit. I will have to take some measurements on my case. I did not realize the Sailor is longer.

Oh, Janéa was awesome! I'd love to see her back again. I'd definitely like a way to sort by nib sizes, but I realize it's a huge pain. I really, really appreciate that there's a way to search by grip diameter. The way to sort that I would most like to see is a "select all" and "deselect all" option for each category. That would make it a lot easier for people when they want to sort out one or a few particular brands. And yes, I for one, would definitely love to see company history's and interviews. I think older and bigger companies could be really interesting, but I'm especially interested in the smaller companies. I thought the Lamy tour was interesting, and I'd love to see one for TWSBI. Welcome Janea, glad that you joined in the fountain pen rabbit hole. I'm with you on ink. There are so many options, and now they can all shimmer. I can understand why you dont carry vintage pens. Not only would you be competing with eBay, but would add all the challenges of old pens. I've have a couple of old lever filler Estebrooks refurbished. Mine are probably from the forties once the sac was replaced, nice writers. I've purchased several Pilot, Sailor, Platinum abd Waterman vintage pens with gold nibs at really inexpensive prices. The main issue is finding converters to fit. So I'm forced to use cartridges since the manufacturers converters have changed. I've lucked out with Pilot the most because most can use the Squeeze Con B. So you don't need the hastles of vintage, although I've found some wonders in that market. Turkey Hammock, another enjoyable pencast. Thanks!

The one pen I would never give away is my grandmother's Sheaffer Balance (1936-42). I was pleasantly surprised when I got the body off the section to discover that the sac was still good. I understand how you feel. I was lucky to know about my father's connection to his Sheaffer PFM. I remember him filling it for the first time in 1966. 🤣 His handwriting, especially block lettering, was immaculate (he was a design engineer) and he held his pen with his thumb, index and middle fingers dead straight. Bizarrely enough I can hold my pen with a boxing glove! I have that pen, one I won in a Crossword competition and a limited edition Sheaffer Balance that I got for £5 (including box, ink and documentation) that I will always treasure. The Balance was for my Dad but he passed before I could pass it on. I also have his PFM.

My most sentimental pen is the Sheaffer Targa Regency Stripe that my dad bought for me in Paris when we were there together in the late 80s. I picked it out because the inlaid nib and finish looked so French to me. It wasn't until later that I realized it is an American pen! Still, when I use it, I am transported to a Paris cafe with my dad, with all the memories of that trip. Since my dad died five years ago, the pen and the memories are even more treasured. ❤

Hi Guys!: Once again the pencast never disappoints! FUN and knowledgeable! Meeting the folks from your company is always a treat! About the effects of aging on pens. . .I have a number of vintage pens, a lot of which are 70+ years old. Most of them have not had any nib work on them as far as I know, and most write beautifully. The fountain pen is different from most consumer goods as they are designed to be somewhat durable and long-lasting. So, unless they are being abused they seem to last forever. If you buy a new pen, of reasonable quality, it should last a lifetime. Yes, some tuning may be necessary at some point, but they should last longer than you will live! As Drew can attest with his Waterman's pen, they can be 100 years old and still work! Unless you are HARD on your pens, they will outlive you.

What Drew said about the fude feed "clearance" makes sense and the person customizing would have to plan for it. In fact, the Sailor Fude de Mannen with a 40-degree bend (the blue one with the steel nib) has this exact problem. The feed touches the paper if you are not careful. However, that is the only "stock" fude nib I've ever seen having this problem, with even the 55-degree Sailor Fude de Mannen (green one) not having this problem. Thanks for picking my question, BTW!

On Fude nibs (fude means brush) I have a Majohn that came with a glass nib fir dipping and a fude with a converter. I also have a Hero 45 degree. It works well when doing Asian calligraphy because you can get strokes similar to what a traditional brush would give you. High and low angles give different line widths and the line is thinner on the downstroke than the crossstroke.

The nib takes hundreds of pages before a noticeable difference happens. You actually have to polish the nib again because it gets rougher after awhile, this happens faster on cheaper paper. Found this out after about 400 pages.
@konradyearwood584511 ай бұрын
It is why seamstresses will never let anyone use their scissors to cut paper as the cellulose in the paper does something to the keenness of the edge. I noticed the issue you mention when I just had the one pen but averaging 400 pages per pen takes some doing when you have ten, twenty or thirty pens.
@nope853511 ай бұрын
@@konradyearwood5845 In regards to scissors, all paper products have some level of dirt, dirt is really just tiny rocks. Its like smashing the very apex of a blade into a rock. Made all my shading inks so gorgeous! And funny enough once I’m used to it I use it for writing and lettering all the time! Fun nib for sure.

As a former English teacher, I was cracking up when Brian read from his composition book! I loved "meeting" Janea, too.

G’day Drew, it’s totally okay to pronounce it “Ozzie”. In fact that is the right way to pronounce it! There’s no such thing as an “Ossee “ in my (and, I venture to say, most Aussies’) book, so go for it 😊. Sandra in Sydney. P.S. Thank you for joyfully enabling my pen journey 🖋️

My husband gave me a TWSBI diamond 580 in white and rose gold for Christmas this past year....I won't ever get rid of it because he was the one that gave it to me :) I do the same with pocket knives....if it was a gift, I keep it in the collection 😁

I love fude nib pens. They're great for drawing and lettering. By changing the angle at which you hold the nib to the page the thickness of the line can be changed without having to flip the nib over. Sailor makes two pens with different fude nib widths. HongDian has some excellent fude pens in a variety of styles. And, yes, Jinhao has several different models with a fude nib option. I purchased my Sailor fude at a local pen store in Vancouver but the others were through Amazon. Hope this info is of some help to you.

Love the advice about putting shimmer ink in TWSBi Eco, which is exactly what I did when I bought it a month ago! :) Great minds.. :) I LOVE how I can see the ink- it's the Diamine Inferno Orange and it's such a great ink, The TWSBI is the blue/bronze new one, and I love how smoothly it writes! I heard two guys from the Goulet Pen Company talk about TWSBIs and voila, I have one! Thank you! :)

I have only 2 pens that were given to me and have a personal, sentimental meaning. 1 is a Lamy Al-Star Graphite that my parents gave me for Christmas the year they became available. The other pen is a Lamy Safari Blue/Silver that was given to me by Brian&Rachel Goulet for my idea on how to condense their oversupply of Lamy nibs that were created by swapping nibs for customers. Just another way The Goulet Pen Company and Team Goulet are a treasure for the fountain pen community!

If we shouldn't use stone paper because it's like micromesh, but we have stone paper and not micromesh, can stone paper be used as micromesh?
