So lovely to see brides that don't look they are in a Las Vegas show or going to a cocktail party

Thank you for the upload of wedding gown pictures. I look at the brides and wonder how their lives went: how many children did they have? were they happy? how long did they live? Some of those lovely girls look a little bewildered, but hopeful, too. And so beautiful.

Love seeing these beautiful brides and their dresses from different eras! Especially loved the doll-like bride at 2:17. I wore vintage for my weddding! Nothing like vintage clothes!!

Wonderful photos. My family has long roots in Iowa. I have my great grandmother's wedding portrait and her wedding dress; she was of second generation German American. She was married in 1891, and her dress was a dark olive color and she had a 17 inch waist. My Irish grandmother was married in 1918, and she wore a dark suit that could be worn again. I loved seeing these photos

I think these dresses are truly amazing. I don't mind the puff sleeves. Each dress is a story. The craftsmanship is perfect.Could you imagine wearing one of these dresses in the 30's or 20's?Please do not compare the dresses in the past to dresses now. It is a totally different lifestyle and educates.If you tried to get any one of the white dresses today it would be sooo expensive.I love lots of fabric !!!!

The second photo is not a wedding dress. It's a Court Presentation dress. Note the ostrich feathers in her hair. And yes, in those days, you did wear a veil and a train on your Court Presentation gown. Also, the dress at around the 3:03 mark. This is also a Court Presentation gown.

There are several photos that are not actually wedding dresses, they are debutantes dressed to be presented at Court. There is one photo of Princess Dagmar of Denmark who is simply in an evening dress of the period and at least one of the sitters in in fancy dress for a ball and not in a wedding dress.

I noticed that the texture of women’s hair was different in the Victorian days because they would make homemade shampoo using bar Castile bar soap as the base or they would shampoo their hair with lye. Conditioner in those days would have been a raw egg. Also women were encouraged not to wear makeup….but those who did used rouge as lipstick.

I'm fairly sure the one at 3:04 is a Presentation photo, not a bride. Note the ostrich plumes on her head, the train, and the fact that she is wearing short sleeves and long gloves, which would have been unheard of for a day dress (i.e. a wedding) at the time

I went to a bridal fashion show and all the new dresses are strapless, and have been that way for almost the last 20 years. In fact, they all look like the same dress rehashed; I was so bored and disappointed. It's such an unflattering style, especially on plus size brides, who I frequently see wearing it and were also shown modeling it. It's also an immodest style, reminiscent of hypersexual Marilyn Monroe. These old dresses are so lovely by comparison, though not thrilled with the puffy sleeves of the Victorians. Rather makes one think of terrible 80s fashion.
@sarahlowe89226 жыл бұрын
Amethyst Rabbit I agree with you100% about those mind numbingly boring and unflattering shoulderless wedding dresses! And it seems as though we're doomed to be stuck with them forever. If I were getting married today I'd be designing my own dress.

I love your editing add-ons like the cloud heart and little good job!..and thxs so much for sharing..it took me most of the day to be able to find my reading glasses so I could get a very good look.. there were a couple of dresses that I really prefer over the rest.. each time I thought I had my pick of which one I like the most I saw another one I like on down the video.. there's something about seeing wedding dresses that could cause a woman to want to get married!.. I could not help but to wander about some of the women in the video.. how did their lives go after the marriage..

At one time a high society bride wore her wedding dress to all social occasions for one year afterward. The concept of a wedding dress only being worn for the wedding is a relatively new one.
@janfriedel45035 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this bit of information about wedding dresses being worn multiple times.
@galleryguide99134 жыл бұрын
The custom was that the wedding dress was to be a lady's best dress and after the wedding it would be altered to become an evening dress, normally by the alteration of the neck line, removal of the family lace that was only lightly sewn on to embellish the dress and the train was removed. The only part of the bridal attire that was only worn once was the veil.
@brooklynrocks23964 жыл бұрын
And can be expensive as all hell. I find it ridiculous to spent so much money on a dress you can only wear once. That money can be put to better use.

For those who commented on their unhappiness, please know your history. It took several minutes to take a picture and it was impossible for anyone to hold a smile that long. Women were not forced into an unloving marriage. On please, where do people learn such nonsense?
@DW-ym3wc5 жыл бұрын
I agree that it took some time to take a photograph in those days, but arranged marriages did take place..maybe not for any of the brides in these photos, but for many others. And this has happened throughout history.

I think most of the women looked great, especially when compared to modern brides. Queen Mary, though, at 1:41, I'd have to say doesn't really have a 'timelessly' beautiful outfit on. As a modern man, I think she looks awful. I say that because of the unnatural, 'crushed in' corsetted waste, which also makes her breasts look too bulgey. I'm sure a lot of the other women were wearing corsetts too, but hers just gave an artificial look similar to any wild body modification.
