Now I understand the importance of the Mid-Atlantic accent as when you used the old microphone, your diction sounded less clear.

I actually wouldn't mind hearing a radio station of today using old vintage microphones like in this video for people who does want to sing old style music in a modern aura it just to me it would be nice to hear someone with a nice voice to sing the blues and a few other things like back then when music seems like they are more enjoyable to listen

Having a mic addiction (especially those sexy old thangs) I picked up, today, a Little Marvel Microphone. It's meant to hook up to two pins on the detector tube of a radio (the instructions have templates for 4, 5 and 6 pin tubes so you know which pins to use on your specific radio) so you can sing or play along with the broadcast and your sound comes through the speaker with whatever transmission the radio's picking up. It also has an interrupter button to mute the broadcast and only allow what the mic picks up to come through the speaker. 1930s karaoke, baby. Nifty video.

And I recently discovered that with the right pre-amp and pre-amp settings, you can drive the hiss way down. I can make it sound a lot better now without any post-production.

It's wonderful. This is how they usually worked with 1.5 to 4.5V. A great microphone for CB radio for enthusiasts. It makes noise and distorts, but it doesn't matter, it's great. Finally metal, not plastic. Generally, such microphones always had to work vertically and before use they had to be gently tapped from the side to disturb the carbon powder. Then, at the beginning they made more noise, then less, but the sensitivity also decreased with the duration of the recording, then stabilized. Too high a current destroys the coal dust, causes noticeably greater noise and heating of the place where the coal dust is located. Typically it is a few mA of current, but it all depends on the microphone model, usually it was 3 - 10 mA.

You aren't going to get rid of much of the noise, even if you do use a low pass filter. That's the noise floor of the microphone and much of that is sitting in the mid high range which is also where the presence of your vocal is sitting. It's also a little harsh so cutting about 1db at 3kHz would fix that or even better, a multiband compressor.

Great video. I can't believe how much you sound like Jeff Glodblum. I think I like the D-104, it looks great. Also the mic that George Clooney was singing into at that little recording studio (oh brother where art thou). What make and model was that mic.? Could one be made if you bought the parts.? Thank you for sharing this with us. EDIT : as far as it taking a while to render and upload...I believe that comes with age. 😂

I believe they used a classic RCA ribbon microphone. A company took over the design, so you can shell out a lot of money for one: www.aearibbonmics.com/products/r44-series/. They do sound very good, but I certainly cannot justify the price for what I do.

Just purchased a double button Universal BB, very excited about recording some live electric cylinder records with it. I noticed as the video progressed the hiss died down especially after you tapped the stand. The quality actually is pretty good. On the input to the recording amplifier, they used to change grid leak capacitors, to make different EQ curves. Such a test record exists from the Edison studio , when they were trying different amplifiers, and were changing out capacitors, to an EQ curved they liked, usually the grid leak capacitor.

I thought I either read or heard that Winchester Cathedral (New Vaudeville Band circa 1966) was recorded with an old microphone--perhaps just like this one. You tube videos only show the singe singing through what looks like a brass cone. One such you tube video indicates that this said megaphone is what made for that vocal sound. I am dubious that a simple metal cone could make for such a sound. Could it be that the New Vaudeville band had one of these microphones out of view when performing on the Ed Sullivan show? I am guessing that the brass cone was used to direct his voice to a microphone like this. The singer's voice indeed does have this sort of sound in this old song. Go to kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnjGgYywjr6Ab68 .
