Vintage Scallop Film New Bedford, MA 1963 Color Documentary "The Pearl of The Atlantic"

"The Pearl of The Atlantic" is a 1963 classic documentary on the New Bedford Scallop industry. This restored 28 minute vintage film features the history of the scallop with rare closeups of it's many eyes to swimming. New Bedford fishing vessels Explorer and Ruth Lee are in the clip. Scalloping at sea and on board shucking, steel nets-dredges, and the crews busy at work show the hard labor and sometimes dangerous conditions in fishing. Excellent video!! My Grandfather spent many years fishing out of New Bedford on the “Mary J Hayes”. I would love to see more of these videos or photos. Thank you! It brings back so many memories of him and the hard work on these boats.

I so looked forward to this every year when I was a kid. Then, it started getting too expensive. At least that's what my mom said when we couldn't go back again. After a couple of years, it just vanished. Very sad for at least one little boy. I'd love to see New Bedford show off to the world again how important we are to seafood and get people who think it's all fishsticks and farm raised what real seafood tastes like.
