It may seem that there's little creativity today, except in cell phones and gaming, but there are still lots of people who enjoy building, crafting, improving. I think that kind of activity is just not considered cool so it doesn't get any publicity. Too bad. That's what made our country great and what gave us so many wonderful toys and tools. Thanks for watching. Alec

Pretty scary huh? My childhood home (my mom lived there from age 7 to age 93) was sheathed in insulbrick. That's simply normal tar shingles as you have on your roof (that's ruff for Sam or Allan) but they were designed to look like red bricks. My dad decided to re-cover the house exterior and the best choice at the time was a very attractive and tough product made from asbestos. These were hard tiles a bit like slate but with a rippled surface. They were cut with a saw to fit and then nailed into place. They were great for many years including a couple of paintings until replaced with vinyl much later. My dad cut them with a saw and installed them on his own. I'm sure he never wore a mask. Who knew. Great video, Alec. Two questions: how much did the sea scooter sell for when it was new, and were the smaller marker buoys reusable?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter8 жыл бұрын
The Sea Scooter was only about $199. It wasn't very well made and most were destroyed pretty quickly. The marker buoys used a CO2 cartridge that could be removed and replaced and the marker was ready to use again. They too didn't last too long. The rubber got hard and cracked if left in the sun and the firing mechanism was pretty cheap. Thanks for watching. Alec

Great video Alec, the really odd thing is that acquascooters are still in production here in Italy, they were made by Arkos, then by Comer and now by "Enjoy"... the concept is pretty much the same... Most people use an acquascooter for spearfishing, but while someone just uses it to reach hotspots (the good use), there's someone who uses it to chase the fish until it hides inside a hole, so it becomes easy to catch the scared fish!!! (not a very fair use). Cheers from Italy!!!

We built a Rebreather once. I still have it. I'll show it to you. We didn't have any computers or junk like that to monitor our oxygen level so we had a simple rule of thumb. We had a lot of "Rules of Thumb" back then - 'you can't get bent if using just one 72 cubic foot tank' or 'you're safe on ascent if you don't pass your slowest bubbles'. Great ideas that didn't mean a darn thing. But I'm still here! So when using the rebreather we said "when you start to see black spots, it's time to come up". Usually, usually, as you get close to oxygen toxicity, your eyelids will flutter involuntarily and you'll see black spots. Pretty scientific huh? The same thing happens in the Aquabell but in reverse. As the air runs out and is replaced by CO2, you start getting woozy. Time to get out. Of course, the time between feeling woozy and passing out is measured in seconds. Good to have a buddy close by. Alec

Alec, in one of your videos, I think it was noise makers. You had covered sounding devices for signaling your dive buddy or dive boat on the surface. There was a short section that you had mentioned whistles, and stated they were great noise makers, but couldn't be used underwater. Well Don't know if you had been updated since that video, but I wanted to let you know that there is now a whistle that can be used both at the surface and underwater. It is called the wind storm. Claimed to be the loudest whistle in the world and also works underwater. I have tried this whistle and it truely does work under.It is incredibly loud. "Worlds loudest"? I don't know, but it is very loud and ear piercing. Most certainly will be heard. Just thought you might want to know if you didn't already. Love your videos, please keep them coming.

Alec; I am sure you remember that some of the valves from Scubapro had a SPG built into valve much like the one this vbog you are showing. (Diver since 1963)
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter5 жыл бұрын
Yes. That valve was one of Scubapro's finest and despite it being a bit of a maintenance nightmare, was in their line for many, many years. The SPG function wasn't great but at least you could see if you had any air and roughly, very roughly, how much like, full, 1/2 full or empty. Alec

Little late to the comments here, but you can easily find those 12g CO2 cylinders from Canadian Tire, any paintball pro shop (they're used in paintball pistols), and most bike shops (for emergency tire charge kits). A 40 pack is around $35 CAD, and a smaller 12 pack is about $16.

I was always told the idea behind the shark dart was that even if they didn't die, they were now full of gas, and their buoyancy was greatly positive, meaning they were heading for the surface in a real hurry. Whatever mad genius invented the thing claimed this meant that the bleeding shark would be whisked away to the surface, avoiding the hapless diver finding themselves amid a feeding frenzy inspired by blood in the water, plus the shark, should it survive being treated like a goodyear, was no longer in a position to continue the attack and would scamper off looking for some gas-x or something. The slight problem of course is that shark blood doesn't cause sharks to frenzy, only prey blood; and if the goal is avoiding blood in the water then blowing them inside out is probably counterproductive; and sharks aren't hermetically sealed so they're not going to fill up like a balloon. This is, of course, also all parenthetical to the fact that it's a viciously cruel thing to do to a beautiful and likely endangered animal who is a minuscule danger to you as long as you have proper respect for wildlife. Then again "proper respect for wildlife" and "carrying a device to explode wildlife" are quite likely to be mutually exclusive. I have seen them show up as assassin's weapons in various video games and other fiction though, a sort of modern-day update to the old mafia icepick for the hitman who shops from Skymall magazine.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
It's real purpose was probably to give the diver something to do before the shark got really mad and ate him! It would take a LOT of air to raise a shark to the surface but hey, that's what divers thought back in the 1950's and 1960's. Take care Dan.

How old shsre you when you started diving? 200 yards we swam over a mile with cave dive equipment. That was twin tanks plus a single drop tank plus a tznk with O2, for decompressing. Then we had to swime back over a mile. Now you czn drive up to just out side the park. Then it was closed to cave diving. OkY that is funny the mini balloons we use ti use those kid ballons and fill them with a air sprzyer nozzle. Just took practice to not burst the balloon. Remeber the shark darts were alternatives to bang sticks. Bring back mzny memories.

Hooper injected poison into the under side of the Shark Dart and attached it to the longer pole......that was what he took into the cage and pulled the cork off after he got settled under water. The point was; he would jab the sharp end of the dart into the shark's mouth or another softer part of it's body then the dart (charged with a c02 cartridge) would shoot the poison into the shark, killing it. However, he dropped the pole/Shark Dart when the shark first hit the cage from behind. I know you HATE this film and it did a lot of damage to the diving industry in 1975 but I love it and it is one of the reasons I started diving. =)

What a shame! The 50's and 60's were the most exciting and wonderful time to be alive - in North America of course. In other parts of the world so soon after the war it was not as good. But here we had the future by the tail. Everyone was working; everyone was safe; we didn't have any TVs, cell phones or computers but we played for endless hours outside with our friends. School teachers were respected (and deserved it); cops were looked up to (and deserved it); politicians of course were just the same - a lot of hot air. But it was really the best time in the history of modern man. Plus of course we had a new, and exciting sport - scuba diving with Mike Nelson to show us the way. Thanks for watching. Alec

the scooter was first built homemade by a man who used this to flee about the border from the GDR to the BRD...and it worked. Then a company used the concept and build commercial scooters, like the one you have. Here's a text about it www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/sueddeutsche-zeitung-fuer-kinder-mit-dem-aqua-scooter-in-die-freiheit-1.1008077

What a great story Jona!! I'm really excited to see anyone make scuba gear but to put it to such special use is terrific. It certainly is the most unique application I've seen. The only correction is that there were homemade and commercial scooters long before 1968. The Port-A-Sub as used by Mike Neslon was sold in the USA in the mid-50's and my club at Underwater World in Toronto was building them in the mid-60's. Thanks for watching and for sharing that story.
