Vintage Southern 1930s-1960s - UK British Railways Archive Series

The Southern Region in the south east of England during the 1930s to the 1960s. Features rare cine films taken by C.J. Barnard, Jim Joyce, Ray Stephens, Phil Tatt and Edwin Wilmshurst.
Locations include London Bridge, Croydon, Folkestone and Brighton. Early days on the now preserved Bluebell Railway from East Grinstead to Lewes. The branch lines from Dunton Green to Westerham and from Paddock Wood to Hawkhurst are explored towards the end of video.

What a find, The Southern and my area, I have may books on the Branches but to see them working was brilliant, brought back so many happy memories of my childhood. For me this has been the most pleasurable watch for a long time. Great to see clips of Folkstone Harbour and the Hawkhurst Branches, I never got to travel on them plus the Bluebell, and the Kent and East Sussex both favourite preserved lines, though these days I'm fortunate to live on the Settle and Carlisle which I travel on regularly. There are many other preserved lines I've traversed but you can't beat the area you were born. The APCM works was just up the road from where I lived. Just as I remembered it.

The Brighton Belle was electric, not diesel. Perhaps you are thinking of the Midland Pullman DMU's that entered service in 1960.

I can understand what you mean, I don't have a layout but have collected numerous Southern Region, engines, carriages etc. My modelling interest is the era 4 & 5 1950s through to the mid 1970s. My son and Grandson are both enthusiasts. My daughter and ex partner always find time to travel on preserved lines when they go on holiday. Guess I've passed on a great legacy.
