I never tire of space and air museums so for me you showed me enough to make me want to go. Back in the day you could climb into a mercury capsule and see just how tiny it was. Apollo was huge in comparison.

Great tour, Amy! Enjoyed your exuberance. If I was the museum curator, I would have waived the rules and let you to climb right into that Apollo 9 CM! After all, you've done so much for keeping alive interest in space history, even for those folks who weren't born yet during the early years. Keep up the good work!

A great museum and well worth a visit to San Diego fir this alone. On a visit in the 80s, my wife and I got a docent tour into the workshops in the "basement". THAT was fantastic!

Nice little 'quickie' tour. :-) Love your shows. I started there on opening day 1980, with 25 planes sitting on a waxed floor. Left in 2000, with 68 (!) aircraft and spacecraft on display, with about another dozen or so stored off-site. In 1980, you could stroll all 100,000 square feet of museum, see and read everything in about 45 minutes. Nowadays... it would TAKE days. And, yup, I was the guy who uncrated the Anders suit from NASA.... ;-)

Made it a point to have great weather while you were visiting the museum, Amy. It is a great place to spend lazy day looking at our air/space history. Use to be able to meet and talk with some of the old aviators/ground crewmen of these crafts. Very interesting stories that you won't hear or read in publications. By the way, that is a Lockheed A-12, along with a Convair YF2Y-1 Sea Dart , sitting out front of the museum.

Been there - twice. Advice: when you arrive, go find the desk in the corner where you sign up to visit the presidential hanger. It's on the base proper, so you have to sign up in advance and take a bus over there. You can't do it on a whim.

Can you visit it if you are not a US citizen?
@PapasDino
@PapasDino 7 жыл бұрын
I just checked their web site and it appears that a picture ID may be required to visit the 2nd half of the museum with the actual aircraft which is on the base but there is no mention of any citizen requirement; the main museum is accessible without having to enter the base. It's well worth a visit and really can't be appreciated totally in only one day.

Dino - the Presidential aircraft are now located in a new wing attached to the Museum, so you don't need to go on base to see them anymore. I can't believe the size of the place now - it was only one building when I was a kid, then 2 when I was there 15 years ago, and now it's 4, plus the missile building!

One of my bucket list places, for sure. I'm trying to see as many SR 71's as I can. If you haven't been to the Kansas Cosmosphere branch of the Air & Space Museum yet, it's amazing as well. One more thing that is worth viewing is the Convair Sea Dart next to the A-12. It was similar to the F-102 and the F-106 (the Deuce and the Six) designed to land and take off from the water on either one or two hydrofoils. The Navy kind of lost interest as carrier aircraft and operations improved. Thanks again Amy for another wonderful video!

Hi Amy, I'm a longtime subscriber to your channel; first time posting a comment. I always enjoy your content! I remember the 1st time going to the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The center court yard was not covered. Note the F-4 Phantom "chasing" the MiG-17. That F-4 is dressed up as "Showtime 100". For those interested, this museum was an automotive museum and it's courtyard garden & fountain (still) features Ford's V8 logo. The museum also features another unique exhibit centered around Northrop-Grumman's reproduction of the Horton Ho-229 flying wing, that was used to test radar cross section and low-observable technology. Did you have a chance to see it?
@corycrowell3852
@corycrowell3852 6 жыл бұрын
Never an auto museum, but Ford exhibit building for the 1935 expo... hence the V8 logo fountain. Also, F-4 is Showtime 112, the aircraft Duke and Irish bagged their first two MiGs in. (NOT "dressed up as"... it's their ACTUAL plane.) :-)

Jim, alo g with Bill and Frank, was a hero for me after Apollo8, I was so glad he made it back on 13. How about a visit to the Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio? It's a small museum, which makes for a more intimate viewing experience and makes it easier to absorb everything without being overwhelmed. Despite the smallish size, the museum has some unique and important artifacts on display; such as the Gemini VIII capsule, an Apollo XI moon rock, and an F5D Skylancer jet aircraft -- one of only four that were built -- which test pilot Neal Armstrong flew.
