Vintage Sydney Speedway Action from Sydney Showground, Sydney Stadium and Cumberland Park, Parramatta.
Filmed in the late 1930s and early '40s finishing in 1948, this video is a testament to the skill and bravery of the drivers of the day. They deserve their place in Australian motor sport history.
After all, this is how Jack Brabham started his career.
It must have taught him a lot.

I remember The Showground in the '60's ducking down behind the fence avoiding all the dirt clods hurtling off the track. Great stuff.

Great footage. My father Allan “Marshall” Russack styled his No 26 Jeep Special after the red and black No 1 car in this clip. Cal Niday from USA had the track record at Sydney Showgrounds at 19 Sec I believe. Dads car was black and red originally but he changed it to yellow about 1950 because Cal brought out a yellow Offe! Dad also raced and came 3rd to Frank Satan Brewer and Ray Revelling the 1951 World Championship in the Eddie Dark V twin car No1 pictured with Jack Skelton. Great memories!

By the way, at 12.10 there’s a pic of dads first hero, Jack Skelton in the No 1 car that dad finally got to drive. He came 3rd to Frank Satan Brewer and Ray Revell in the 1951 World Championship at Sydney Showground in that car. It looked a bit different by then. He rebuilt the v twin engine after each race and never blew it up after driving it flat to the board! He said that car went like a rocket. He added a replica of his 26 back to it for “safety” I have lots of photos of him in it.

By the way the green No 1 car at about 12 min 10 sec with it driver Jack Skelton was built by Eddy Dark. Johnny Peers raced it. One night Johnny refused to race it. He said it wouldn’t steer properly..it was announced over the PA and Kev Gallagher said he’ll drive it and show Peersie how to drive. Well, he flattened it into the first corner and hit the fence, killing himself. Dad (Allan Marshall) was standing with Eddie watching, so Straight after the accident Eddie asked ad if he’d like to be the next driver. Dad said yes. He put it on the trailer. Turned the steering wheel. Nothing happened. All 3 woodruff keys in the steering box were broken. Dad came 3rd to Frank Satan Brewer and Ray Revell in the 1951 world Championship in that car. Also he broke the long standing 3 min 10 sec record for 10 laps at Cumberland Oval. His time was 3 min 2/5 sec.
