Vintage Vacuum Cleaner Deep Clean Test - 1997 Hoover Turbopower U1060

Here's the first victim of our testing, the 600 watt Hoover Turbopower U1060. I am expecting great things from this machine so let's find out how it fares in our test.

Congratulations on the debut of your new series 🎉 We reckon at 70% this Hoover did a middlin' performance but it was better than we anticipated. Great to see Podge supervising and ensuring there had been even sand distribution in the test area. The game is now afoot to see if the next machine is higher or lower in pickup prowess...... 👍

WOW! This is fantastic. I think the turbopower is going to be one of the better vacuums in this test and old Dyson one of the worst vacuums, but we will see it. Great!

Love this series already Steve, will be interesting to see the results of the vintage machines. Especially as we all have our ideas of what will come out on top. My only advice is to ignore the scientific method fanatics on this, the results will be good enough to judge the cleaners while keeping the videos fun to watch but also something we can all try at home.

Fantastic job! Can’t wait to see more of these. One thing you may want to consider. I do the same type of testing with my vacs. The only difference is I use pink sand on a black carpet. It really does a good job of physically showing the agitation that way. Made it more fun for me than just showing data. I actually ranked each vac not only based on the percentage picked up but also a 1-10 based on the level of agitation. So happy you are doing this regardless and can’t wait to see how the juniors preform.

Does it mean that part of those 30 gramms are lost between the carpet and the whole machine?

Essentially yes - the sand is either still in the carpet OR stuck in the machine. I was surprised by how bad the TP did. Think I'll do a follow-up video on it and maybe even a retest

This is such an interesting point, and could well be a reason / the reason why, back in the day, the Which? magazine chose to weigh the entire vacuum cleaner before & after testing, rather than just the bag. However, as has been suggested already, it all comes down to what information is being gathered, and for what purpose. Anything to do with subjectivity fascinates me no end. In the case of this Hoover Turbopower, one thing I remember from selling this model back in the late 1990s was that so much fine dust used to escape from the bellows area and end up all over the machine (like many non-medical commercial settings, our shop was only ever really 'spot-cleaned' for presentation, and it was on a very busy main road, so years of fine dust was pulled out of the carpet when demonstrating vacuum cleaners), so I am wondering if sand from this demonstration has made its way into the gaps and spaces where I know dust can escape. Added to which, there are so many places on these cleaners where debris can hide. For what it's worth, I thought 70% wasn't too bad, although of course in realty there are way too many factors which would impact the usefulness of any testing, which is why when you do it here for fun I can actually take it more seriously than I ever could a scientific Which? report. I mean, even the best performing cleaner can be completely inefficient if it's never used (obvs!), and added to which, not everyone knows how to clean and / or get the best from a vacuum cleaner. My late mother was incredibly house-proud and vacuumed thoroughly every day for more than fifty years, the first thirty-odd of which saw her using only the most basic of cylinder cleaners (an on/off button was more than enough features for her liking, and the suction controls on the hose-handles were the work of the devil). She knew how to get the best from her appliances, which is why everything she used regularly was worn-out to an inch of its life by the time it stopped working. However, in the recent past she became physically unable to use a "normal" vacuum cleaner, and relied more & more on a rechargeable cleaner, reasoning that as there was now only her and my father at home, and rarely any visitors (my parents were always the ones out visiting), it was enough for a daily going-over, although she would never accept that any rechargeable vacuum (no matter how fancy or expensive) could ever compete with a mains cleaner, thus it became my job to vacuum the house extensively every two weeks, using her Hoover Telios for all the "hose jobs", and the Dyson Small Ball for the main parts of the carpet. Funny to think the Telios is over 23 years old now, because to me it still looks quite modern. No doubt my mother would have killed that off long, long ago, had it been her main cleaner, but by then she had a Hoover Purepower - the purchase of the Telios was more to do with her being unable to ever leave behind her cylinder 'roots' really, thought it's spent most of its time in the cupboard. @@TheVintageApplianceEmporium
