My old band mate had a vintage small stone that sounded so damn cool and different than any other small stone because something in it was broken. The rate was super super slow, creating these insane phase swells that ended up being vital for a couple songs' rhythm parts. Nothing else like it. My grand orbiter can get pretty slow, but the phase sound is totally different. I miss that pedal

Shootouts of nearly any and every kind always confound component tolerances with issue-differences. If Rob had 20 examples of each issue to try, and there was a *consistent* audible difference in "gnarliness" across any randomly-selected pair of newer and original pedals, compared blind as they are here, then one could draw confident inferences. But, done the way it's being done here, it's simply a party game with no real informational value. About 15 or so years back, I read an interview with Mike Matthews - Mr. Cigar himself - in a business magazine, where he noted that one could take any four consecutively built Big Muffs off the production line in the '70s, and they would all sound different from each other. Though 1% resistors have become abundant and much cheaper, the tolerances of capacitors have not improved all that much in the intervening 45 years, resulting in variation across pedals. It's not AS huge as it once was. But there can be just as much, if not more, variation *within* an issue than *across* issues.
@cameronstolhand71492 жыл бұрын
I think the difference in the small clones was due to different values in the potentiometers which is completely random. That would be interesting if we had more to compare from to see if I'm right.
@stuartchapman51712 жыл бұрын
I watched a video recently that showed some of the small stones having different cap values and types and a tutorial on how to hack it to original. It wasn't a Neo which may well have good caps. The only difference I could hear was speed. That was listening on cheap cans via a fone, so not a good test.

Biggest difference between the the original EHX pedals and the Neos is the originals still work. My nreo small stone just died after a year of light home use. I wanted to try a brand nex EHX pulsar tremolo in a store a while back, they pulled it from the display cabinet, pluged it in, didn't work. The more expensive pedals, like my Super Ego, still works most of the time but the budget EHX pedals, in my experience, waste of time and money. Would never buy another.

Thats funny you say that... i hadnt really thought about this but during the apocalypse a friend was scamming the unemployment system so he really wasnt being particularly responsible with money. He ended up getting a bunch of the new-ish ehx stuff. Before i even got a chance to go hang out and check out this bad ass board he had been sending me progress pics of.... i go over there one day and we are talking gear etc and i mention 'let me check out that board' and after some hemming and hawing he was like 'i think i may have hooked em up wrong or something...' and shows me a board with a bunch of dismantled pedals and circuits. At the time i honestly just chalked it up to the fact that his other new hobby he had discovered with his govt money happened to be methamphetamine. I mean... he actually is capable of some electronic engineering etc and i kind of figured he got to tweaking and just tore them up in a drug addled state.... now i wonder if maybe it was a bit of both. Glad i ran across this though cuz it hadnt even crossed my mind that faulty pedals would even be a factor cuz they were almost all ehx... specifically i said something about like, "damn at least it was a pretty board." Cuz they all had cool graphics etc... was the hot wax ehx? Pretty certain that was the one he said started the whole chain of events.
@TheRealcdawg222 жыл бұрын
Alot of the older EHX stuff had different power requirements (not all of them were 9V) and they weren't necessarily labeled on the pedals themselves. I had to label all of the EHX wall warts I have because of that issue. Although not before accidentally frying a Korg Tuner with a 40V EHX power supply.
@stuartchapman51712 жыл бұрын
I've heard a lot of people moaning about newer ehx. I own a burst. I bought it used, no idea of age, it looks pretty new. It's fine, I had a holy grail from new. Just sold it, nice sound too tame. I do own an der Memory boy, an old one.. One of the batch that had the trims tunned by a dodgy tech. I've got it running a bit better. It got a low pass filter, lo fi sound. No good for music but works on my dark ambient work. My own experience is the opposite but I'm one of many users. I'm definitely cautious now. There's too many "quality" brands that seem to trade on there name these days.

@@TheRealcdawg22 40v.... jesus! what is that even for!? And yeah i could see that being a problem. Jersey Mike's was the best a few years ago until they nerfed the menu and ditched half their sandwiches. I thought both of the first two older pedals sounded marginally better, but not a difference that justified the price. The DODs both sounded broken and muted, but the new one was slightly less garbage. Also Wazas usually have two era modes, so hard to compare those two without trying the different modes.

I usually do pretty good at these challenges. But not for good reasons. It seems that the vintage pedals tend to have more noise associated with them, but more headroom at the same time. Slightly fuller sounding. The reproductions seem to be cleaner, but slightly more compressed. The same tends to hold true for stereo receivers also. I believe it has something more to do with the construction and components, and the possibility of slight circuit changes. I've had electrical engineers explain why...in great...mind numbing....detail. That may, or may not, have involved other dimensions and maybe Klingons. But when faced with the choice between a $600 vintage or a $50 reissue, the money wins every time. No one will hear the difference. No one will care. And I can have a pedal _and_ pay a few bills with the money saved.
