I bought a pair of regular dress trousers, slim down the waist and turn them into a pair of plus fours.

I'm about to embark on this mission. purchased a pair of oversize men's trousers for $2 with a nice grey/charcoal windowpane weave. Narrowing the waistband is routine for me, but the rest is uncharted territory. Watching and learning...

I tried this technique with a pair of old French corduroy trousers that were too short in the inseam, but I couldn't bare to let them go to waist, so I turned them into knee breeches with buttons up the hems, they wear nicely in the summer for working on the farm and pair with my 18th century shirts.

Another inspiring video (I've made knee breeches out of ordinary trousers for amateaur theatre costumes) I think I might have the confidence now to alter the waistband on some trousers - though mine would need letting out 😂 You have an impressive ruler too!!

Impressive work as always. On the point of pleats, could you possibly fold the front (the same way you did to reduce the waistband at the back) to achieve the result? Assuming the waist on the trousers was large enough, of course.

I wonder if you have any ideas to modify a pair of dress trousers into a pair of classic (horse) riding breeches aka Jodhpurs? You know the type of trousers most cavalry regiments used to wear like the Wehrmacht, the Russian Red Army, the British and US Armed Forces... I like to wear these trousers to compliment a 1930's style motorcycle riding outfit (with of course a protective Kevlar long john underneath to prevent massive damage to my legs in case of a fall and slide...

Could you not just tie the trousers to below the knee with at garter, or just a piece of ribbon, and not alter them at all? or is it likely to slip out.

I used to do this in the 80's for DIY knickerbockers as a kid. Usually did the elastic version. These days I make mine from a pattern, using fabric that catches my fancy. That way I have control over everything in construction and end up with a garment that I can wear for 10-30+ of regular wear.

I wear plus fours quite often, they're still very much used in the UK in the countryside. I work for a sporting estate in Scotland and most estates have their own tweed/tweeds. Vintage looking tweed suits are still very much used today even for practical purposes, the plus fours are great for walking in heather as the bottom of trousers would get ruined constantly walking in it. They're also incredibly warm in the cold and wet.

I've done this in two of the versions. For one pair I did the ribbon method, although I will admit it felt very bulky and cut into my skin a lot when wearing them. So although that was an easy method it's probably not one I'd use again. For the other pair of pants I used the method with the button, although for a doll so it's safe to say those pants are too small for me to wear lol. I also used a push button instead of the classic kind, due to the miniature size of the garment. But other than that detail, that method looks like it would be more comfortable, as there wouldn't be a lot of creases pressed tightly against the skin. Both of those pants I made myself from scratch though. I'm considering buying a pair of pants and re-make this way because I just like the look and it might be a nicer alternative to shorts in the summer.

I'm not quite sure, but I think it's about the period and if one would wear it whith a waistcoat or not. Because pre WW1 one would always wear a waistcoat, therefore the buttons are on the outside and it doesn't matter, but after both wars things got a lot more casual and one might not even wear a waistcoat, so the buttons went inside.

I think I will try this. These seem like an excellent option for cycling and im still looking for fun solutions to wear while doing that. On question though: How do you get the drawstring all the way around the tunnel? I Imagine just pushing it through would not work and that you need something a bit more rigid to lead with, like a piece of wire or something?
