Meccano is a brand of model construction system created in 1898 by Frank Hornby in Liverpool, England. The system consists of reusable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles and gears, and plastic parts that are connected using nuts and bolts. It enables the building of working models and mechanical devices.
In 1913, a very similar construction set was introduced in the United States under the brand name Erector. In 1990, Meccano bought the Erector brand and unified its presence on all continents. In 2013, the Meccano brand was acquired by the Canadian toy company Spin Master. Meccano maintains a manufacturing facility in Calais, France.
In 1901 Frank Hornby, a clerk from Liverpool, England, invented and patented a new toy called "Mechanics Made Easy" that was based on the principles of mechanical engineering.[2] It was a model construction kit consisting of perforated metal strips, plates and girders, with wheels, pulleys, gears, shaft collars and axles for mechanisms and motion, and nuts and bolts and set screws to connect the pieces. The perforations were at a standard 1⁄2 inch (13 mm) spacing, the axles were 8-gauge, and the nuts and bolts used 5/32 inch BSW threads. The only tools required to assemble models were a screwdriver and spanners (wrenches). It was more than just a toy: it was educational, teaching basic mechanical principles like levers and gearing.
The parts for Hornby's new construction kit were initially supplied by outside manufacturers, but as demand began to exceed supply, Hornby set up his own factory in Duke Street, Liverpool. As the construction kits gained in popularity they soon became known as Meccano and went on sale across the world. In September 1907, Hornby registered the Meccano trademark, and in May 1908, he formed Meccano Ltd. To keep pace with demand, a new Meccano factory was built in Binns Road, Liverpool in 1914, which became Meccano Ltd's headquarters for the next 60 years. Hornby also established Meccano factories in France, Spain and Argentina. The word "Meccano" was thought to have been derived from the phrase "Make and Know"

I just won a lot in an online auction. It was discribed as, Tonka Toys and Meccano pieces. There were two photos. One showed five Tonka Toys and the other showed the same Tonkas with a few pieces of Meccano joined together witha black object that had a fly wheel. I wanted only one of the Tonkas so I bid $25 Canadian for the lot. I was surprised that no one else was bidding on it. When it arrived a week later, as I had it shipped to me. The black object was a 1948 era Mamod steam engine. There must be two sets worth of Meccano, that included gears, sprockets, chains, two sets of tools and two instruction books! One of the screwdrivers has a wooden handel, it's that old. Everything has some grime and light rust on the bare parts. I feel like a kid again.

I can certainly appreciate the way you feel about your new toys ! I am from South Africa and back in 2012 I was finally able to buy a huge, second hand nr. 10 set. The evening it arrived at my house I was basically in some kind of wonderland. Today it is basically double the size of the typical nr. 10 set and still providing me with countless hours of fun. I mostly use it for experiments and the odd rig or whatever I require to do some other kind of task.

Wow Robert! Such a grand collection! I sold my antique Gilbert erector set a few years ago along with other antique toys. I came to the realization that when I die my kids would probably throw them out or donate to Goodwill. Your sets are amazing! Because I spent a lot of time building my erector set and other building sets I developed a mechanical aptitude that came in handy later in life. I would have loved to had your sets to build! Endless projects to be built. Being metal these sets will last forever. The worm and other gears were made with such amazing precision. Endless hours of fun. It would be too expensive to make these sets in the 21st century. You held me spellbound as you displayed the various pieces. Thanx for sharing.

Nice video, if occasionally not quite accurate. For instance, electric motors were available in the 'thirties. I had Meccano as a kid in the fifties, (NO PLASTIC! ) and took up the hobby again in my retirement, sixty years later.
