Presenting a collection of some popular Hindi songs of legendary singer-composer SD Burman.
Music composer Sachin Dev Burman’s great love for football, paan, and Kishore Kumar’s company is well-known. The music composer who combined a firm grounding in Indian classical music with a mastery of Bengali and northeastern folk music to produce a body of work that had a lasting impact on the Hindi film industry. repurposing genre-based songs, turning kirtans into romantic duets, folk into ballad, fusing Indian and Latin-American sounds to create a path-breaking soundtrack. Bengali folk singer-composer Abbasuddin Ahmed, an exponent of Bhatiyali folk music, initially recorded the sang ‘Allah Megh De’, the Jari gaan (song of sorrow) folk form, in the 1940s. The song became an instant rage and inspired Burman to revisit it two decades later in Guide, With lyrics in Hindi. Burman displayed all the eccentricities of a maverick, but when it came to music, he meant business. He changed the way music was written. His tune came first, the lyrics followed. This swap allowed him to introduce colloquialism in songs, paving the way, where the beats are composed for short conversational phrases. SD Burman belonged to the royal family of Tripura, and was exposed to classical music from an early age, he was equally enchanted with the folk music of Comilla in Bangladesh. Adept in using modern musical arrangements, he used the orchestra to embellish tunes, which were often based on ragas and folk forms. He began a career in radio and as a singer. His first recording as a vocalist was a composition by Bengal’s revolutionary poet-musician Kazi Nazrul Islam. After relocating to Bombay. he quickly established himself as an innovative film composer with an exceptional sensitivity to the demands of the moving image. His music enhanced the power of the visuals. Among his many honours, Burman received the Sangeet Natak Akademi (National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama) award in 1958 and the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in 1969 for his contribution to music. His name also has been attached to a number of music awards from a variety of organizations.
