Greetings from West Cork today Heds (the wonderfully-named Skibereen, to be precise). Incredible reggae haul yesterday here which I shared with Jonny, the chazzers and antique stores were ripe picking albeit they are now barren again after me and a pal swarmed them, locust-style. Yes, really enjoyed the chat with you mob, highly entertaining as usual. All this talk of six inch pianists and big pencils helped this video, er, rise to the occasion. Wonderful Nic Jones showing.

I had a bad case of Skibereen once, but a course of penicillin cleared it up. A big reggae haul in Country Cork! Well, that's challenging my lazy stereotypical view of the world. Mind you, there are few places in Western Europe nearer to the Caribbean than the South West of Ireland. Hed

Well, I'm sure Dolly and Willie will be able to talk amongst themselves, while old J.S. goes on at length about the form and function of the fugue. I'm starting to worry that while Bach was quite obviously a genius, he might not be a party person 🤦♂️ Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers - Hedley

Hi Hedley, great fun response - we definitely need more videos from you this year. Great to see the Nic Jones. His albums are virtually impossible to find, but I did manage to get From A Devil To A Stranger a couple of weeks ago at a record fair. I had to wait months for it to be reduced in price by 50% before it was affordable. His albums really need to be reissued. I was told years ago though that there's a guy who owns the rights to lots of classic folk albums but refuses to release them, so maybe Nic Jones is one affected? Got a couple of McColl & Seeger albums but never seen that one - love the cover. As a Spurs fan loved seeing Ossie's Dream - wonderful. Got that Joe Brown album, not that I knew I was buying it. I picked up what I thought was a copy of Renaissance's Ashes Are Burning from the cheapo bin at a record fair, only to find when I got home it was the Joe Brown 😂. Shame it wasn't the first one. All the best for 2024...Pete
@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin589310 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching Pete. A happy new year to you. I was lucky with that Nic Jones album. The whole situation with Celtic Music's ownership of the Leader/Trailer catalogue, and their poor track-record of reissuing anything is a travesty. I understand Nic's family tried to get Celtic Music to reissue his albums to help with medical and care expenses, but it just didn't happen. Sadly, I've heard reported by someone who was able to visit where all the master tapes are kept, that they seem to be in a dreadful condition and some may already be beyond restoration. Sorry, that was all a bit of a downer. I expected that Brown's Special Brew album to be a bit crap. Joe Brown seems like a nice chap, but I can't say I've ever particularly liked his music when he appears on TV. So, I was surprised how much I like the mix of country rock, gospel, blues and hard rock on that album. You can't judge a book by its cover. I'll be trying to make a few more videos this year. I'm even lining up an interview with a member of a 70s UK band, which should be interesting if it happens 🤞 Cheers - Hedley

The Beatles? Are there no safe spaces for me in the VC? It was nice to see the Mike Post record, though. My copy, along with the Magnum P.I. (short shorts picture sleeve) 45 got boxed up when my LP collection got too overgrown to allow room for singles on the shelves. The Magnum theme was fun to play loud even back when I had a crap record player. I've got the Mike Post TV themes album somewhere, but the music sounded better at 45 RPM. I guess I must be an audiophile. I'm looking forward to tackling the 2021 Country Vinyl Tag this year. It's hard to predict how many videos will be required to respond to all of the probes. I guess i shouldn't have been surprised that you chose the US for that question, but i did think the UK because of the folk. The Paula Fraser sounds intriguing from your description. I read once that A Hard Days' Night is the blueprint for perfect pop songwriting..hard to disagree with that. Very entertaining video Hedley. All the best. Rob.
@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin589310 ай бұрын
It was difficult to abandon British and Irish folk, but you can hear it in the mountain music of the Appalachians. In fact an argument could be made for that music having more of continued life than our indigenous folk. Dolly's late 60s albums are full on country, but in the early 70s she did a rather nice blend of country and folk. It's much like all country artists from her generation, they all had a purple patch from the late 60s to the mid 70s. There was something about the music, recording and production which has not been bettered. I once asked the owner of a record shop in Scarborough what his favourite decade of music was. He said, 1966 to 1975. I think he was onto something. I was very lucky to get hold of that Nic Jones album. It's a travesty how Celtic Music has mismanaged the Leader/Trailer catalogue. They own so much music which needs to be made available. Cheers - Hedley

Right off the bat you show a great record that I'd love to find! Nic Jones’ debut is the only one of his records I don't have yet (I was really lucky to find the others). 60s Merle Haggard is top notch. I have Mama Tried, and a few records from 1970 and 1971, and I'm on the lookout for more. I also work (mostly) from home and I have instrumental music on while working. I may even be raising the pretentiousness stakes by listening to Christodoulos Halaris - Byzantine Secular Classical Music, but on CD, not vinyl. Great dinner guests! And I’d love it if you could find out what’s going on with those giant pencils.

I was very lucky to get hold of that Nic Jones album. It came from a neighbour's collection his widow passed on to me. There are some very rare folk albums which I'm going to sell for her, as there's no way I can keep £200 records. But she said I could keep the Nic Jones. When I'm not listening to Tallis, I'm rather partial to some Byzantine orthodox chant. I checked out Christodoulos Halaris, very nice. Thanks for the pretentious tip off. Cheers - Hedley

I agree about the lyrics or noise being distracting, amazing TT kept his head through the religious upheavals A navy record swap meet in the Atlantic ocean maybe? A dinner party with BBQ'd schnitzels sounds like that'd work. I like my dated 90s music too I went to see Jesus Jones before Christmas and didn't really like that tbh but just thought I'd go and it was convenient anyway. She who must not be named has started earwigging our conversations and deciding to pipe up with info and tips even though we've not asked her anything. It is a bit of a mystery how Tallis got away with some of his music during Mary and Elizabeth's reigns. Its assumed he was a favourite of both Queens, and was given far more leeway than others at the time. We know very little about him, as unlike some of his contemporaries, he was not known for writing. He kept his head down and stuck to his music. I did think about showing my Jesus Jones record rather than that one by The Farm. But someone already showed a Jesus Jones record, so I thought I'd pick out something in a similar vein. Cheers - Hed

Happy new year to you, James. I swear Alexia is earwigging conversations and piping up without being asked anything. It happened again today, Lou and I were talking, and in she barged in unwanted and interrupted us. We got an Alexia for my Mum, it was great because she could get in bed and have her turn the light off. After she died I was listening back to some of my Mum's recorded commands which Amazon hold onto, and every morning Mum would say good morning to Alexia. Sweet. I've always thought you should get Amazon vouchers for being nice, polite and civil to your Alexia. Remember your please and thank yous, and after a while you've been awarded a free record. I don't like the eagles, but I feel I ought to have that if I'm curating a country rock collection. As I said in my video, I'm always surprised Joe Brown wasn't in a 60s group. I really liked seeing the two Merle Haggard records shown. Sixties Merle was great. I'm pretty sure you are the first person to choose Thomas Tallis. Several people including myself picked Tom Waits for their dinner party, so he has quite a full itinerary. I'm not familiar with Vernon Oxford. I will have to check him out. Thanks for swinging by, Randy. Yes, I saw you picked Waits as one of your guests. I hope we both get him in a good mood, I've seen some horrible interviews where he's really very difficult and evasive 🤞 I think Merle, like most of his generation, was poorly served by the 80s. They felt the need to keep up with the young crowd, even if that meant losing what made them unique. I'm glad that they all managed to reclaim their status and respect in their later years. Heh! Maybe the VC will be ready for a Country tag next year. We'll see. Cheers - Hedley

@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin58939 ай бұрын
Hmmm? Josquin des Prez. He's new to me, but he seems to be an interesting chap. There's little consensus on his importance, with some music scholars suggesting he was the most revered composer of his age and an equal of Beethoven, while others think he wasn't as influential as some of his contemporaries and his status has been elevated by having well over a hundred compositions wrongly attributed to him. Thanks for sending me down that little Renaissance music rabbit hole. Don't worry, more country rock is on its way. Cheers - Hedley
