Sure we need a little internet help sometime, but as you prove, it's only to get the price point realistic... We are new record store owners (new owners of an existing store; I've commented on this series before) and it's so gratifying to see that your process is pretty much identical to ours. And you come up with the same prices we would. I actually do go into a lot more detail in terms of getting the exact pressing plant (I've memorized most of the marks) because the previous owner said that was very important, but when most the of records end up being $3-$5, I'm really reconsidering putting in that much time. It can take 20 minutes to identify the exact right Discogs record. And then the time involved if your pressing isn't even on Discogs and you feel obligated to enter it! And again, for an end price of $3-$5, which is most of our used inventory. We do also run everything through the Spin Clean, but that doesn't feel like as much of a waste. More of a value-add. I was curious about your comment near the end on retail-ready. That could be an interesting episode. We're the only store for 90+ miles, so we put out pretty much anything people bring us, condition-wise, as long as it's playable. But I can see being more particular when you'll have enough inventory regardless. If that's what you meant by retail-ready.

I was excited to see those dividers poking out from your inventory. I just made some for our inventory stock shelves, but might go a different route for the browsing bins. To narrow your search even more you can use the run out codes for Mastering and Pressing Plants etc. Then you can get to the exact disc quickly. You will find that you may have a variant that still hasn't been listed yet buy you can tell what group it belongs with. Sometimes those details, especially who mastered the record can matter to collectors. First Pressings and Promo records are generally prized as well. I have 4000 lp's and I have been adding them to Discogs for a year. Got about 1000 done and only 3K to go. I was very slow at first but can find most albums quickly now. The biggest sellers are the biggest pain as they were pressed in every plant when sales were booming. For example there are nearly 500 versions of Rumours of all types. Narrowing it to Vinyl gets you under 200 to dredge through. You better know some of the details or you will waste hours. Discogs has lists of all the run out codes. Very useful.

All true but remember, G.I. isn't pricing for sale on Discogs or other online outlets but for his local stores, so pinpointing the exact variation may not be important to him as the customer has the ability to hold and inspect the product for this minutia. The goal here is to derive a reasonably fair price.
@janedoe6350
@janedoe6350 Жыл бұрын
@@kenjarrell4123 Agreed.... and in the quickest time possible. I have often found you don't always get a return on a dead-wax matrix number unless it's iconic. These are $20 to $30 records. Remember, Discogs is a data base. Sometimes the matrix number is not listed and you have to submit a contribution to add to the data base.

If I’m asking a certain amount due to rarity, collectibility, etc., I clean it on my RCM, then play test it and put in an archival inner sleeve, but keep the OIS. That becomes impractical if selling a large amount, so just grade conservatively. For a record with a lot of different pressings, just as you mentioned, look at the pics of the label after entering in the catalog number. There’s tiny differences between pressings, and that’s the easiest way to decipher which one you’ve got. I tend to never grade a record as mint (M), as even brand new sealed records may have a tiny issue, and again, instead tend to grade conservatively. Also, see how many “want” vs “have” the record can be a factor in pricing. If already opened, put the record behind the cover, essentially when shipping to avoid seam splits. Well done vid. Thanks 🔊😊🎶

When I Iook for a vintage record on discogs or eBay, I look for NM copies preferably still sealed and completely ignore VG grades. Most of the time I will wait until one becomes available that is sealed before buying a record that is not considered at least near mint. Also, filtering out overseas copies is not a good idea if you are in the market for a record. I have ordered records from Japan that were delivered in just a few days while I sometimes wait weeks for a seller in the US to get my order to me and usually the one from overseas winds up being better than advertised as far as grading goes. Just something to consider when purchasing a high grade or sealed record.

Good stuff....picked up a couple of pointers with Discogs👍 Question...what is the best way to spot warped records? I know the Rumors copy you showed it was obvious... I am getting killed at stores after cleaning then seeing a warp after looking and examining and not catching.....one of my shops said to try and hold level and find a reference point and align? I have not found a system yet and I would say 20% of the used albums I am purchasing have a slight warp that I missed. Keep up the great work on the channel...

Great generic information. The cleaning method seems a little rough though. One should always use a vinyl record brush first, so the larger dirt particles remove smoothly off the record. Scratches and hair lines always come from microscopic sand etc. between the record and the inner sleeve. It acts like a sandpaper. If it's light dust that comes off easily with a gentle blow, then you know it's OK to clean it with a cleaning wipe.

I kind of came in after the live stream began. I'm glad to see that what I've been doing is pretty much the same thing you are showing the viewers. I did finally get an ultrasonic cleaner but I have not put it together and used it yet. I know they don't help with things like fingerprints but they do help clean what's in the grooves. I got a SpinClean or whatever the name is cleaner earlier but never used it yet. Do you think cleaning with the solution and rag will do just as good of a job as something like the $70 - $120 SpinClean cleaner? I know that name is probably not right but it's that common yellow non ultrasonic cleaner I'm talking about. Do you also sell on Discogs and how do you find specific sellers on Discogs? You can't type in the sellers username and search for sellers on Discogs apparently and I've yet to be able to find a way to look up certain sellers. Maybe I just need to try again but it makes me think I'm missing some sort of search that allows you to look up the various screen names used by sellers. I'm going to try to search for NTX Vinyl and see if it pulls anything up but when I tried in the past it didn't so I'm not expecting it will. I'm guessing you do sell some on Discogs? I have a rare Mutantes OG mono record from 1968 on sale. How to fairly grade the condition of an old record as that? The vinyl has some surface scratches, been only one feelable that produces a pop during about 20 seconds of the first track. Overall it plays well without jumps or skips and the background noise is minimum. The sleeve is well preserved with very few little cuts on the edges due the thin paper used back then in Brazil, no other marks, risks or ring wear is present. I graded as VG+ for both vinyl and sleeve, but I know that is questionable. More than 2000 collectors wants this particular copy on Discogs, and the marketplace price range from 180 to 800 dollars. What do you think?

this was especially interesting - helps me think more concretely about selling my very large (15k?) record collection. One thing not covered - what qualifies a record as NEAR MINT??
@NTXVinyl
@NTXVinyl Жыл бұрын
A nearly perfect record. A NM or M- record has more than likely never been played, and the vinyl will play perfectly, with no imperfections during playback. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as any sign of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits, cut-out holes, or other noticeable similar defects. The same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves, etc.

No way to tell. Actually could have a subsequent label. Which basically means it is later pressing. Usually any one of the two or three pressing plants have records of equal value. A subsequent label, however, is often lower valued. Outer sleeves are less likely to “change” over the years. As a matter of fact, an early 70s record “picking up” a bar code in the 80s is good example of a change on a cover.
