Hey Brad, First let me say that I could not do what you do but I have some hints because I have been doing furniture repair for over 40 years and have some info you might like. They make plugs so you don't have to use dowels. Just drill a hole and hammer a plug into the hole. Sand a little (if you need it). They even have different type plugs including one that looks like a button. (no sanding needed) The other tool accessory that is available is a drill stop. You put it on the bit and tighten it with an allen wrench and it is faster and more accurate than tape. Hope this helps. Don't think i am an AH. Never to late to find new stuff.

Nice build, simple yet effective. I noticed you didn't put screws in until the glue dried though. Usually mechanical fasteners are used to keep the parts from moving until the glue dries, as the glue will be doing the bulk of the holding. I fear the glue might crack or move once you cinch the screws in. I would've just sunk the screws with the glue wet, that way it dries in its final location. Great solution for the support pieces, way cooler than screws! Will be watching more :)
@RichardsonForge
@RichardsonForge 7 жыл бұрын
I agree! If I were to do this again I would put in the screws before the glue was dry, or avoid using screws all together. Thanks a lot for watching!

looks good. nice job on the use of the dowels and cutouts. two design change recommendations. (1) place a 5/4" x 4" board between each of the legs at the top on the front and back. This will give your records a flat surface to lean against. (2) for a similar reason, place a piece of luan/plywood/other on top of the rails to give your records a flat surface to sit on. Make sure this is 12" wide so the whole record sits on it. Both of these will save some wear and tear on your covers.

Leaving the center (where weight of vinyl would be on the sleeve) supported by two slats with a ga in the center will result in longtime use spine splitting on bottom as the weight wouldnt be supported in anywayto transfer it other then the thin cardboard, a thin piece of masonite over the two bottom slats would rememdy this. I use outwe sleeves and inner sleeves i store outside the cover loose behind them so this would result in the outer sleeve stretching and leaving lines on the outer sleeve which would be even worse. I am no expert but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

It might damage your covers. Putting pressure on the outer corners over time. But I love your build ! You gave me good ideas !
@lefreakyfreak
@lefreakyfreak 4 жыл бұрын
Covers will always wear out center first (for instance from frequently 'dropping' them back into a dj case thereby casing the outer, often sharp, edge of the vinyl to damage the inner and outer sleeve sides, eventually even poking through the entire cover sleeve side). I agree with Brett T and would also recommend having at least some form of support in the center (thus supporting the vinyl itself rather than the cover. My 2 cents.

It wouldn't be a bad design if the way the records are supported crates indentations in the cardboard cover, ruining it, there's also the risk of the record making a hole in it since the whole weight of it is held just by the cardboard... record albums need a whole surface underneath.

can anyone give me the measurements? that would help a lot!
@Felipedominguez1
@Felipedominguez1 6 жыл бұрын
Taylor Whitney it looks like he used 3/4 to 1 inch boards, so the width including the boards is probably 14-15 inches, seeing how a record is roughly 12"x12" so the inside has to be 13" to add for a good non snug fit. The height looks to be around 16-18" and Length is around 16" seeing how he has like 30 records (yes, I tried to count them) in the box. So I guess to make it more clear the measurements (COUNTING THE 3/4-1" BOARDS), are ROUGHLY W14-15"xH16-18"xL16" but it's probably best if you measure your total records length and try to make your own measurements to accommodate the space you have where you wanted to put them and have a better fit. Hope I helped, good luck with your build! :)
