I'll admit that scared me... when I was like four or five yrs old. Today's young-uns are way too sophisticated to be fazed by the soundtrack to a 1950's kind of cornball "Haunted House" composed of clanking chains, creaky doors and spooks that go OOOooooo. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken organ, now that can still put a chill up my spine. If that was on this video it would wipe the floor with this heavy metal weak sauce.

No doubt you are correct. Perhaps it's a shame that kids can't appreciate the subtle pleasures. Everything these day is turned up to a Spinal Tap 11. If everything is loud all the time, then nothing stands out. Think back to how scary the movie Psycho was...and with very little blood. We've lost something if it takes a graphic disemboweling to get our attention.

Sounds of Terror! A friend's mom's boyfriend had that. He played it at a Halloween party they had. They did a scavenger hunt and left me friend and I alone in their house and it scared us, but we loved it! I agree about your pick from 1967. There's a darkness and creepiness to that one. THE song that scared me most as a kid was Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love." That middle part with all the freaky creaking and moaning was the stuff of nightmares to me! These are great picks! 😀

There are about a couple of thousand Metal records that are in the same dark, spooky sounding vein, ho hum Now if you had included the classics "Panic" or "Shock" by the Creed Taylor Orchestra I would have been impressed, put speakers outside and crank it up and no pesky trick or treaters will come near. Black Sabbath will just attract them like flies to your front door.

Hi Rick, happy Halloween. It’s not a custom we follow too much in the UK, in more recent years kids have fun with the idea but as a Baby Boomer I had never heard of the event until well into adulthood. I watch all of your videos, enjoy all but the odd one. How is it that our music tastes are so varied. I have one Doors album and once saw Alice Cooper live at the UK Jazz & Blues Festival in 1968 when he arrived by helicopter with a flame trail. Your challenge is to give me an introduction list of metal albums I should try to get into the genre. Best, Pat

I usually haul out Cream' 'Wheels of Fire' and play 'White Room' because I always associated it with Halloween from the time I was a really little kid. Also, my best friend owned that 'War of the World's' record (Jeff Wayne) and back in high school, we listened to that a lot. I need to score a copy of that one! I also seem to listen to Bauhaus a lot more in October. Lately though, I've been listening to classical "spooky stuff" like, 'Danse Macabre' and 'The Resurrection of Lazarus' - the latter I discovered while reading 'The Phantom of the Opera.'

Rick, I have been subscribed to your channel for a little over a month now. As an "audiophile", musician and collector of vinyl, I always feel a little disappointed that you have never mentioned any classical music. As far as spooky music goes, there is so much to choose from that genre! I will just give you one example for now, since I don't want to bore you. Check out the Analogue Productions re-issue of "Witches' Brew" by the New Symphony Orchestra of London, conducted by Alexander Gibson on RCA Living Stereo. It's full of hair-raising orchestral music that you might be familiar with. As the kids say, "It's a banger!"

Hi Paul - and thank you for the suggestion. My only reason for omitting classical, as ashamed as I am to admit it, is I have very little exposure to it. Years ago I was introduced to Roy Harris (I believe his Civil Ware piece) and was moved by it. I am sure I will wade a little deeper in to those waters at some point.

@1:16 On 09/09/2015, I purchased a white hot stamper version of that Black Sabbath album from Better Records. I played it at my local high-end store, on their flagship system. It was the 2nd best sound quality I ever heard (Led Zep II, RL / SS pressing takes the #1 spot). But that Black Sabbath album was a photo finish with the Led Zep II pressing. I do not recall how every song sounded. But the first song, with the bell, was wild. The bell sounded like it was way off in the distance, far above and to the right of the right speaker (I never heard height like that). It was as real as it gets. That bell was nowhere near the stereo. It was years ago, so I do not remember all of the other ways that song sounded great. One thing I do recall is that Jim White of Aesthetix was a guest that day at the store. He walked in to the room while that first song was playing, and said that he never heard it sound like that before. I spoke to him years later, over the phone, because I had questions about the DACs that he designs and builds. I reminded him of who I was, by mentioning that Black Sabbath song at that store. He remembered. Alas, on my own stereo, which is pretty good, I do not get that same experience. I get a taste of it. So I know that I need either upgrades or a new room (my room is half the size of the store's room). So that bell is a good way to test a stereo. Black Sabbath, first album, stamper codes: Side 1: WS-1871 19728-1 [long space] 4 Side 2: WS-1871 29729-1 [nothing else]

@@TheJoyofVinylRecords This forum keeps tossing the (rhymes with "stinks"), of where I will be on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Richard Vandersteen will be there. The name of the store is Audio Connection, in Verona, NJ. I will bring my Led Zep II and Black Sabbath pressings, and probably a few other pressings. They control what gets played. Depending on the turnout, it can take some time. But they have always accommodated me. When I heard the pressings at their best, the store had the Clearaudio Goldfinger Statement cartridge on loan. Nothing they have had since has matched its glorious realism. But whatever they will be using should sound amazing. I hope that this comment survives.
@TheJoyofVinylRecords
@TheJoyofVinylRecords 3 ай бұрын
@@NoEgg4u It made it through! I believe you mentioned the Goldfinger cart before right?
@NoEgg4u
@NoEgg4u 3 ай бұрын
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords Yes, I have previously sung its praises. If I won a contest and was offered any cartridge on the planet, the Goldfinger would be my choice. But Clearaudio has since released newer versions. I have not heard any newer version. They probably sound even better (if that is possible). But without hearing the latest model, there is no way to be sure that nothing bad will be present. Also, I have never heard any other cartridges in that league. Others might sound better. But that Goldfinger with the Led Zep II hot cut pressing, on that state-of-the-art system, was like nothing I ever imagined. I am not easily pleased. I have high expectations. I, unfortunately, hear issues right away. And yet that Goldfinger cartridge exceeded my expectations. It blew me away. I have heard Hana's flagship cartridge at the store. It was very good. But not amazing. It was borderline in the ballpark of the Goldfinger. But I would pass on it. If it were less expensive, it would be an amazing cartridge that is better than nearly anything most folks have ever heard. But at its price point, I feel it falls short. The store normally has a Clearaudio Stradivari cartridge. It is very good. But the Clearaudio Goldfinger leaves the Stradivari in the dust (and the Stradivari costs approximately $3,000, I believe). The Stradivari is not a "blew me away" cartridge. The Hana is better than the Stradivari, but still a distance away from the Goldfinger. My Air Tight PC-1 cartridge is noticeably better than the Stradivari, and bests the Hana cartridge, too. My PC-1 cartridge is in the ballpark of the Goldfinger (but is still no match for the Goldfinger). The Goldfinger just made all of the equipment disappear. Every instrument and every voice was simply there, focused, in real life. Years ago, right after I purchased my PC-1 cartridge, Air Tight released a PC-1 Supreme cartridge, and the reviewers wrote that it was better than the PC-1. It also cost 50% more. Perhaps the PC-1 Supreme can go toe-to-toe with the Goldfinger? When I had my turntable tuned by the store's turntable guru, I heard my turntable on their flagship system. It was dynamite. So that PC-1 cartridge is the real deal. The Supreme version must be in Goldfinger territory. I do not know what cartridge the store will have for their upcoming event. Also, they often demo a new product. Last year, they had Vandersteen's new pre-amp. It was very good. But it was no match for the store's Aesthetix Metis pre-amp. Vandersteen makes amazing speakers, and amazing monoblock amps. His pre-amp, as good as it was, I feel is not on par with his speakers and amps. So it is a roll of the dice on how good their flagship system will be, when they are demonstrating new products. Any chance of you attending?

You might have lost him on around the 9th or 10th paragraph. For those who can't afford that RL pressing, the Zep II cd with Barry Diament as mastering engineer is the next best thing. Magnitudes cleaner than the George Marino mastering, but more laid back.Unless you have reel to reel, in which case the 7 and 1/2 IPS Atlantic reel tape might be the next best thing; or the best thing.

My dad used to always play Disney's Haunted House record when I was growing up. I grew to hate it because he made such a big deal out of it every Halloween. The whole neighborhood actually grew to hate it. Later in life Halloween (Samhain) became a huge deal holiday as I was involved with a bunch of Goth Rock bands! Name the position and I was in it, roadie, tech, promo, booking, stage manager, assistant band manager, adviser, and confidant, friends and family! I even got to meet one of my "heroes", Patricia Morrison of Sisters of Mercy fame (also with The Gun Club before hand and later the Damned). Major sweetheart by the way! Got to spend a half hour with her thanks to the singer for one of my bands who arranged it as a surprise gift to me. (She knew her and never told me!) I digress. Provided I launch my channel, I am trying to decide whether or not to wait until next October to share my Goth albums or just share them whenever.
