This was a nice tutorial. The blue tape ALWAYS screws me whenever I use it. There is nothing wrong with this technique if it works for you then its another tool in your arsenal for building. I found that using the vinyl top kit from Model Car Garage works best! Also the slimmest plastic square rod works for the chrome trim edging at the base of the top. I have a tutorial on the 69 Nova on my Channel DMG Scale Models.

I'd probably run my rivet maker along the seams to replicate stitching.. I do headliners with resume paper and the stitching looks pretty sick.

I've always wanted to try this. But I've always wondered about the trim. Do you simulate the crome trim?
@moparnut62869 ай бұрын
I've thought the same thing I'm doing a 73 roadrunner where I'm making a halo top trim using styrene strip for the trim... It a copy of the real car that the vinyl too is long been gone.
@v8cool2315 ай бұрын
I've got an odd technique . I use to thin strips of plastic for the seems. The thinnest I can find. Spray the roof in a satin black primer for example. Leave it for about 30 seconds when it starts to dry, and then lightly drum my fingers over the tacky paint.So the layers of fingerprints create a texture. And then repeat, and repat again.

Very nice work, if you glue a small hal f found strip the length of the roo of before you use the tape. You can also get the effect of that seam. I use to use a black cloth tape for car tops.

Thanks so much! I will have to try your method on my next simulated vinyl top. 😀👍🏻

Just saw this video and just wanted to know where the vinyl is. Just go to a hobby shop and buy a small roll of vinyl. Be careful when using a heat gun to remove the wrinkles.

What do you use on the chrome trim? Paint or bare metal? What paint do you use? I was going to use a vinyl top for my 57 ford.

So, do you leave the top Blue or do you paint it for the color you want the top to be?

Did you paint the roof before you taped for the vinyl top
@scalemodelcarchief8 ай бұрын
Lyle, I painted the entire model yellow then I applied the masking tape. Once the masking tape is in place I paint my desired colors with craft paint and a brush. Light coats of craft paint seems to work best for me. I apply each coat of craft paint in different directions (cross hatching) letting each coat dry thoroughly. I hope my explanation makes sense. Thank you for watching my video. Have a safe and blessed day. Steven 😀👍🏻

@@scalemodelcarchief Here is a tip I have done successfully. I do the styrene strips thing first. Then I decanted primer and used home depot sponge paint brushes to dab the the primer on which gives you a textured to scale look . let a coat dry, apply to your liking then paint. The pointed and slanted edge of the foam paint sticks allows you to aplly right up to the trim without hitting it. I've seen the tape trick and it isn't wrong I just prefer something stable.

I did this to my JoHann Plymouth super bird back in 86’ and it’s still staying on it well. But I used the two inch wide regular color masking tape for it and cut it down very narrow for going around the base of it for the edges trim . Painted it all black and the body purple.

I find that a thin layer of good old Testor's tube glue under the tape to be a good setting agent. It seems to make the tape hold up a lot longer, especially under hot paints. You just burnish the edges and go.
