Excellent video. I lament the tendancy of fans to wax poetic about Jackson's 1980's material. Famously, it was the marketing that propelled those albums to stratospheric levels. Anthony Fantano has pointed out that Thriller is not a 10, even though its a classic album. I agree with him. The album is fairly passable musically. There is nothing special about it. The title track was considered a bit gimicky like many other attempts in the past. But it was the short film that provided the edge the song needed to take it out of the gimick world and thrust it into a phenomenonal status. So, my opinion here is that the Trinity of Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad are not really celebrated for their music. Its the visuals that has provided that status. But Branca and McClain focus (as they should) on profitability, while staying clear of controversy. And right now the profitability lies in Thriller and Bad. Dangerous was not even given a 25th anniversary celebration. Dangerous, HIStory, Blood on the Dance Floor and Invincible has more to say, but their visuals didn't propel them to the status of Jackson's 80's material. And for me thats a shame. HIStory was very poorly promoted, partially because their was extensive waste at the top levels of Jackson's team, eg. Booking hotel rooms for engineers that never used them etc. Which would have meant Jackson's team could argue for better marketing. On the face of it, HIStory was very well promoted, but I would argue that it was the beginning of poor marketing for Jackson projects. For example, look at the fact that the track listing is not present on each disk. When I played HIStory on my record player, I had to calculate which record had This Time Around.

Thanks for the detailed comment. Totally agree with what you said about the labeling of the individual discs. You can't even read which side is which without a bright light.

To say "there's nothing special about it" about the thriller album is outrageously dishonest. I prefer MJs 90s albums and songs brother, but I refuse to sh!t on his 80s material. Yes, indeed it's the groundbreaking music videos that launched thriller and bad to unparalleled stratospheric levels, but the music on those albums were great. Like phenomenal.

I, too, am still so annoyed and hate that They Don’t Really Care About Us is censored. I still have the original double CD set from release day that has the original uncensored version. So I don’t mind too much that it’s censored on my digital album and if the vinyl is ever reissued, I won’t mind it much if the tune is censored there as well. It’ll be a bit annoying but I can get past it. I loved the booklet in the CD box, so I can only imagine how cool it would look vinyl size!!

The European release of History is a gatefold not a boxset. Im getting my first copy next week. Cant wait to finally have it after all these years. I dont know yet how the 3 records + booklet are stored in a two record gatefold but we’ll see I paid 290 euros so about 309 US dollars. And it looked like jt was in pretty good condition. And i think the EU version does have the songs on the inner labels.

@@InfectiousGroovePodcast Hector Barjot on KZbin has a really good video on the different releases. “Michael Jackson History Album on Vinyl - complete series” I think he’s French but the video has English subtitles. I think the USA release was a boxset and the Europe (Holland press) and i think the Colombia release were gatefolds. Im from The Netherlands (Holland) and i just bought a Holland press shipping from France.

There are some differences. On the cover the “3 RECORD SET” on the top left is in white on the EU release. And the inner sleeves dont have the big holes in the middle, its completely closed so you cant see the label from the outside. And i noticed the USA releases dont have the songs on the label? Which is weird. But i think the EU release does have the tracklists on each side of the records. Pretty cool stuff all around
