My son was a para in the French foreign legion. So so proud as any parent should be! such a massive achievement for them. Was absolutely heartbreaking for me as a single mother to except that I might have not seen my boy again but once it sunk Into my head that this was "his dream" then you understand a bit more. they were based in corsica in my day. do you know what company he was attached too as in my day there were 4, one was specialist in mountains, another was sniper and sabotage, another was aqua marine, can't remember what the 4th one was. there was another regiment on corsica who did all of the same things without the parachuting 2eme REI' think the 4th was anti tank

Thinking of the photos of him, he had a few in the Alps, actually he told me a story about that lol he was to lead the way and he nearly took everyone over the edge 😲😲 Yemen........ They were alot of talk, for a good few years about them taking them out of Djibouti, never heard if it happened? Can't remember the name but he was based on an island. I was lucky because I used to speak to a few guys who had been in there before he joined, well wouldn't really say lucky as I new alot what went on which made it really hard for me, still can't completely talk freely without crying. In my heart of heart it was the worst time of my life but, hes home now safe and sound and I got a kepi lol he kept the one that's got everyone's signatures on it when he left and gave me his other, oh and I have his red towel and t shirts lol

@@ScottishXtartan i spent time attached to 13eme DBLE in Djibouti. saved a lot of money there. i know they had 5eme RMP based in islands near Tahiti, also had a base on an island chain near Madagascar but can't remember which regiment it was

To answer, in the FFL, if France goes in a foreign country to do war operations, the platoon leader asks the legionnaires coming from this country if they are okay to fight in their homecountry or not. If not, there's no punishment. It's a rule allowing not to create loyality problems in legionnaire's minds.

Been an ex legionnaire from 2013 - 2018 it’s a pleasure to hear and see James having this guy on. Put me back in the mindset of who I was and why I did what I did amd that was to fix myself from been broken. I was in the legion from 1986 to 1999 now I'm in UA as a dog handler and looking for cadavers, I'm not kidding if I say it's a culture shock for western soldiers who come here, you say you wanted to go to UA but changed your mind!! good choice you made!! because even as Navy Seals, Legionnaire or whatever you are with good military training and enough experience you are not safe here,, this is a meat grinder several hundred thousand soldiers have died within two years and more than ten thousand civilians, without criticism of you and with all respect for your experiences and others who have participated in modernized wars against underdeveloped countries, but no one can imagine with the wildest imagination what a war like this is like, only people who were in Stalingrad in 44 and 45 would be able to understand what is going on here.

I left the British Army infantry after 3 years back in 1983 and 3 months later went over to Paris France Fort De Nogent but unfortunately I changed my mind before being sent down to Southern France for selection and training. Anyway I just wanted to say The French Foreign Legion looked way tougher than British Army and that’s including The Paras and marines who I did many field exercises with! I’ve seen Navy Seals and I wasn’t so impressed I think the French Foreign Legion guys look tougher and are tougher for 2 main reasons! 1. The recruit is not even in the country he was born in and 2. You have to learn a foreign language French fast also 3. You are 100s or thousands of miles away from your family and friends and don’t get leave to see them soon like you do being a soldier in your own country

i served in la legion etrangere in the early 80's, listening to his account it seems to have changed a lot. we were not allowed to leave france, in fact you could not leave the town you were based in unless corporal-chef or higher, did my basic training in castelnaudary, and after joined 1ere R.E.C based in orange in south of france, saw action in lebannon and chad. at that time everybody after selection did the same basic training, and then joined one of the regiments and trained further with them. back then out of the 5 years you had to serve 2 years overseas. the question was asked about fighting for france, and although you are legionnaires they see it more about fighting for the honour of the legion, they never surrender. legio patria nostra sums this up, the legion is our country because back then until you had served 4 and a half years and got french citizenship you were stateless

I know a few guys who were in, in the 80s, wow!! it was really hard then! It is no where near as bad as the 80s. Think you can only go to the jail now for no more than 40 hours. You don't get them beating each other to death now either lol god I don't know if I should be writing this hmmm If not I will delete lol 🙏💚🙏

Although I did hear that a lot who are being made to be s uicide b ombers go all the way there to avoid doing that!! When I used to live in France back in the 90's it came to my mind several times to join the Legion especially to get a french passport. Lebanon was already under full control of the Syrian regime and they started calling boys for military service and I didn't want to join the Lebanese Army because I used to consider it a collaborative army with the enemy. By joining the Legion it was an easy path to get a French passport especially I am a kid who lived his entire childhood on Beirut's fronts hanging with the militia guys which made me think it could be an easy ride for me especially I knew that the Legion also offers trainings to build a career path when we go back to civilian life. I ended up not doing it and I don't regret now that I am more mature I know it is not an easy ride 😂😂😂
